[01] EP condemns Santer, UK over BSE
STRASBOURG - The European Parliament condemned European Commission President
Jacques Santer and Britain for serious errors in the way they handled the mad
cow crisis but stopped short of immediate sanctions.
[02] Vets extend Dutch pig export ban
BRUSSELS - Veterinary experts have voted to maintain the European Union's
export ban on Dutch pigs because of swine fever for a further week, a European
Commission official said.
[03] Beef label plans face delay
STRASBOURG - Proposals to introduce cattle passports and beef labelling aimed
at restoring consumer confidence damaged by the mad cow disease scare face
long delay after the European Parliament demanded changes.

BONN - British Foreign Secretary Malcolm Rifkind said Chancellor Helmut Kohl
was wrong on European integration and warned that the planned single currency
might divide Europe for decades.

GENEVA - The European Union and the United States move into a major face-off
on Thursday when World Trade Organisation chief Renato Ruggiero names members
of a panel to look into the big powers' row over Cuba.

MOSCOW - Moscow declined comment on a U.S. proposal to create a permanent
Russia-NATO force but hoped Secretary of State Madeleine Albright would
explain the idea during talks in Moscow this week.

BRUSSELS - German engineering giant Metallgesellschaft AG has withdrawn a
request filed with the European Commission for clearance of its planned
acquisition of industrial group AGIV.

BRUSSELS - The European Union put the final seal on legislation to protect
small stock investors when an investment firm goes bankrupt.
[09] Bonn to recoup 10 millions marks
BRUSSELS - The European Commission told Germany to recover more than 10
million marks in unpaid duties on imports of Turkish television sets.
[10] Mini-budget to ensure EMU entry
ROME - Prime Minister Romano Prodi said he had prepared the framework for a
fresh budget to ensure Italy is a founder member of the single European
currency and would be launching the package in the coming weeks.
[11] Kesko/Tuko deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission told Finnish wholesaler and retailer Kesko
to divest the daily consumer goods business of former rival Tuko after it
blocked the merger between the two firms last November.
[12] Safrica trade deal against clock
BRUSSELS - South Africa may still have a chance of partial membership of a
lucrative trade treaty with the European Union, officials said, but they are
running against the clock to complete negotiations before an April deadline.
[13] Spain could help EU-Egypt deal
CAIRO - Egypt has asked Spain to lobby its case during talks with the European
Union on a trade partnership deal and invited Madrid to play a bigger role in
its fledgling economy.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it was seeking comments on a joint
venture between publishing companies Rand McNally & Company of the United
States and Italy's De Agostini to market, sell or licence rights to maps and
atlases.

STRASBOURG - European Parliament plenary session begins at 0900 GMT (fourth of
five days); vote on motion to censure the European Commission for its handling
of the BSE crisis (1400 GMT).
