    AMSTERDAM - Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok rejected the idea of a "Europe a la carte", saying European member states should decide the future of the Union together.

    AMSTERDAM - The European Union's foreign relations commissioner, Hans van den Broek, said smaller EU states should cede power to the 'Big Three' in the interests of faster decision-making.

    MOGADISHU - Somali faction leader Ali Mahdi Mohamed held talks with the European Union's special envoy on ways to stabilise the country and bring humanitarian aid to drought-stricken areas.

    JOHANNESBURG - South African and European Union trade negotiators have agreed to meet again to iron out differences over a planned trade and development deal after weekend talks in Pretoria, a spokesman said.

    [09] France/China accord on Ariane

    PARIS - France is seeking an agreement with Beijing to allow Europe's Ariane rocket to be used as a back-up in case of failure of China's Long March launcher, the newspaper Le Monde reported.
