BRUSSELS - An ambitious European Union trade and investment plan for the
Mediterranean has finally ground into action, but still faces difficulties --
not least Greece's uneasy acceptance of arch-foe Turkey's inclusion.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission announced on Thursday it was probing Danish
shipbuilding aid, because it might have exceeded what is allowed under
European Union law.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has put off by at least a week a decision
on the draft directive on media concentrations, an EU official said on
Thursday.

BRUSSELS - Burmese democracy campaigner and Nobel prize winner Aung San Suu
Kyi called in a smuggled video on Thursday for international sanctions to be
imposed on Burma to force political change on the Rangoon government.

STRASBOURG - The European Parliament adopted a proposal on Thursday which aims
to ensure that the trade aspects of the customs union between the European
Union and Turkey operate properly.

STRASBOURG - MEPs set out their position on the European Union's draft revised
budget for 1996 and the draft budget for 1997 on Thursday, in preparation for
next week's talks on EU spending between the three EU institutions.

STRASBOURG - The European Parliament adopted a report on Thursday calling for
a strong line on state aid to the steel sector.

STRASBOURG - MEPs approved on Thursday a proposal to renew an EU guarantee to
the European Investment Bank against losses on loans for development projects
in Asia and Latin America.

STRASBOURG - MEPs agreed on Thursday to set up a European Parliament committee
of inquiry into alleged infringements of the EU ban on British beef exports
and claims of maladministration of the mad cow crisis.

STRASBOURG - The European Parliament gave its second reading on Thursday to a
draft regulation on development cooperation with South Africa.

BRUSSELS - A marathon push for long overdue agreement on the annual farm
prices package is planned by the European Union's Irish Presidency next week,
a government official said.

BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers are likely to agree next week a
proposal to halve the 1997/98 cereals compulsory set-aside rate to five
percent, an Irish EU Presidency official said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - Germany has said it will vote against a regulation setting the aid
for the 1995 European Union hop harvest at next week's farm ministers meeting,
an Irish government official said on Thursday.

GENEVA - Key world powers, led by the United States and the European Union,
pledged on Thursday to fight global warming by working for an early accord
attacking gas emissions produced by the use of oil and coal.
