[01] NATO relations with Yeltsin
BRUSSELS - NATO Secretary General Javier Solana said the elections in Russia
were a "victory for democracy" and the alliance looked forward to working with
the new Russian government.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission faces a lengthy battle to bolster its role
as an aviation watchdog for transatlantic routes as EU carriers struggle with
poor results, pilot strikes and looming liberalisation in their home markets.
[03] Rolls Royce Plc/Hong Kong Aircraft
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had approved the creation of a
joint venture between Rolls Royce Plc and Hong Kong Aircraft Holdings Ltd, a
subsidiary of John Swire & Sons Ltd, in the field of aero-engine servicing.
[04] EU clears Bayer/Veba latex deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had cleared a latex joint venture
between German chemicals firm Bayer AG and Huls AG, a subsidiary of the Veba
group.
[05] Saint Gobain/BPB deal not a merger
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on the acquisition by Isover St
Gobain, the insulating products subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, of a stake in
Gyproc Insulation Ltd and Moy Insulation Ltd, which belong to BPB, did not
fall under the EU's merger rules.
[06] Kesko/Tuko deal
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it would look into the planned merger
of wholesalers Kesko and Tuko following a request from Finnish authorities who
fear the deal may harm competition.
[07] Commission to meet airlines
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is to meet four airlines on Friday to
discuss their complaints about the payment of a third and final aid tranche to
finance Air France's current restructuring programme.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament strongly criticised a report recommending
deregulation as a way of boosting job creation and competitiveness in the
European Union.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament called for the extension of a one-billion-
Ecu scheme which has helped small and medium-sized enterprises create 42,000
jobs since 1994.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament adopted a report calling for a European
stock market for fast-growing companies.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had decided to review duties
imposed on certain polyester imports following appeals by two manufacturers.

PARIS - The European Union opened a new grain year with just about every
market signal pointing to a slow start to exports, traders and officials said.
[13] EU to adopt VAT strategy paper
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to adopt a strategy paper next
Wednesday outlining the switch to a common Value Added Tax system by 1999, a
Commission official said on Thursday.
