[01] No EU farm prices deal agreement
LUXEMBOURG - The huge cost of eliminating mad cow disease prevented European
Union farm ministers agreeing a new farm prices package early on Thursday,
Italian Agriculture Minister Michele Pinto said.

LUXEMBOURG, Jun - Farm ministers pushed
on Wednesday for the Commission to leave the 1996/97 sugar monthly storage
refund unchanged, a Spanish official said.

LUXEMBOURG - European Union farm ministers agreed on Wednesday a revised
import regulation for sour cherries, over-ruling German reservations about
the measure, an EU official told reporters.

PARIS - France's biggest farm union said on Wednesday a European Union aid
plan for beef producers hit by the mad cow crisis fell short of the help
needed and called for more money.

BRUSSELS - One year after seven European Union countries were due to drop
border controls with each other, France is still digging in its heels over
lifting frontier checks with Belgium and Luxembourg.

DUBLIN - Inter-governmental conference negotiators have not had much chance to
work out what they can achieve so far but things should improve by the Dublin
European Council in December, Irish Foreign Minister Dick Spring said on
Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - Consumer Affairs Commissioner Emma Bonino said on Wednesday the
European Union should tighten up rules on food safety to help restore consumer
confidence in the wake of the mad cow disease scare.

BRUSSELS - The European Union could bring in new members from eastern and
central Europe without raising the budget contributions from EU states that
have already been agreed, according to the EU's regional affairs commissioner
Monika Wulf-Mathies.

BRUSSELS - The European Union and Canada headed into a summit meeting in Rome
on Wednesday, still at odds over last year's so-called Turbot War and unlikely
to patch up their differences in time to sign a lucrative trade pact.

BRUSSELS - The European Union is to strengthen relations with India, one of
its oldest trading partners.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission, in its latest attempt to clamp down on
German subsidies, on Wednesday outlawed 240 million marks in investment aid
promised to two Volkswagen plants in former East Germany.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had cleared a 124.3-
million-deutschemark investment subsidy for Mercedes-Benz but declared another
8.6 million marks aid illegal.

BRUSSELS, Jun - The European Commission is set to impose conditions to the
megamerger between Swiss drugs and agrochemicals giants Sandoz AG <SANZ.Z>and
Ciba-Geigy AG <CIGZn.Z> due to their strong position in the market for crop
protection, industry sources said.

BRUSSELS - The planned EASDAQ European stock exchange for growth companies
will help prevent the "Americanisation" of European firms seeking capital,
Heinrich von Moltke, the head of Directorate General XIII, said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - EU telecoms ministers meeting begins at 0800 GMT; proposal for
common regulations for the development of postal services in the Community and
protection of personal data in the framework of digital telecoms networks.
THE HAGUE - Last meeting under Dutch Presidency of the executive committee of
ministers from 10-member group of signatories to the Schengen Convention on
free movement of people begins at 0800 GMT; Commissioner Monti attends. Topics
discussed are progress on the cooperation agreement with Iceland and Norway,
role of the Court of Justice and problems relating to terrorism and
extradition.
LYON, France - G7 (U.S., Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Italy and United
Kingdom) heads of state and government summit (Thursday-Saturday); Commission
President Santer and Commissioners Brittan and de Silguy also attend. Main
discussions focus on foreign policy, including debate on relations with Russia
during working dinner at 1800 GMT.
