[01] New UK plan to end beef dispute
BRUSSELS - Britain renewed efforts to defuse the "beef war" with its European
Union partners on Wednesday, offering a new plan for the gradual ending of a
worldwide ban on British beef. In LONDON, Britain's Foreign Secretary Malcolm
Rifkind said approval of a framework may be possible next week.

BRUSSELS - The European Union's Standing Veterinary Committee demanded on
Wednesday that Britain kill more cattle to eradicate mad cow disease, British
officials said.

LONDON - Britain said on Wednesday it will provide an extra four million
pounds for research into mad cow disease which has infected its cattle and
resulted in a worldwide ban of its beef by the European Union.

LONDON - Dutch veterinary doctors said on Wednesday they had developed a test
which might lead to the early detection of mad cow disease and its human
equivalent.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had formally adopted a
proposal to protect Greek feta cheese and 317 other regional food products
against competition from other areas.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had proposed two
changes providing more flexibility in a set-aside scheme for cereals, oilseeds
and protein crops.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission outlined on Wednesday the efforts it had
made to simplify European Union legislation and to apply the subsidiarity
principle in sectors ranging from energy to financial services.

BRUSSELS - Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard's plans to withdraw the
draft directive on the use of landfill sites for waste will have to wait at
least until June 18 for adoption, her spokesman, Jesper Jorgensen said on
Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission launched a tender on Wednesday for a study
of ways to develop a "methodological and procedural" approach for setting eco-
label criteria.

BUDAPEST - European justice ministers said in Hungary on Wednesday that delays
in judicial proceedings were a serious problem in many countries and proposed
measures to speed up judicial processes.

German subsidies to help Mercedes-Benz <DAIG.F>build engines for its "Smart"
small car line.
