[01] Single currency struggles
BRUSSELS - Europe's economic woes are expected to be on display on Wednesday
when the European Commission unveils data likely to show a growth slump and
Germany and France missing the test for a single currency.
[02] EU commitment to Malta and Cyprus
BRUSSELS - The General Affairs Council on Tuesday reaffirmed its commitment
to the accession of Cyprus and Malta to the European Union, saying both
countries had much to offer a unified Europe.
[03] Germany puts doubts on beef ban
BRUSSELS - Germany has ruled out any immediate concessions on a worldwide
ban on British beef, making it unlikely that EU veterinary officials will
ease export curbs on Wednesday.
[04] Study of "mad cow" human link
BRUSSELS - The Health Council agreed on Tuesday to step up efforts to monitor
the human equivalent of mad cow disease in the European Union and to research
how it is transmitted.

BRUSSELS - The Health Council failed once again on Tuesday to break a deadlock
over the draft directive to ban all advertising of tobacco products.

BRUSSELS - The Health Council adopted a common position on Tuesday on an
action programme to set up a public health monitoring system.

WASHINGTON - The White House said on Tuesday there has been no progress in
settling a copyright dispute with China that could escalate toward trade war
with publication of a tentative U.S. sanctions list on Wednesday.
[08] EU's role in Bosnia criticised
BRUSSELS - Comments by former U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke criticizing
Europe's role in Bosnia were not made in a letter to international mediator
Carl Bildt, a spokesman for Bildt said on Tuesday.
[09] Deutsche Telekom's discounts plan
BRUSSELS - The European Commission has concluded that a plan by Deutsche
Telekom to grant discounts to large customers should be delayed by a year to
allow for competition in the field of alternative telecoms networks.
[10] Duisenberg to head EMI
AMSTERDAM - Dutch central bank president Wim Duisenberg, 60, will take over as
president of the European Monetary Institute from July 1997, the central bank
said on Tuesday.
[11] EU seeks beef sales recovery
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is relying on a return of consumer
confidence in beef to stay within its annual farm spending ceiling, a European
Agricultural Guarantee and Guidance Fund official said.
[12] Referendum on treaty changes
BRUSSELS - Nearly three in four European Union citizens want a referendum if
any changes are made to the EU's treaty over the next year, the European
Commission said on Tuesday.
[13] Coffee import duties to be ended
BRUSSELS - A plan to remove duties on coffee imports from developing countries
is on target for a June decision, a European Commission official said on
Tuesday.
[14] Television accord on June 11
BRUSSELS - France is demanding that a clause be inserted into the revised
television without frontiers directive to prevent television stations
relocating to other countries to avoid stricter rules in their home country.

CAPE TOWN - European Commission President Jacques Santer said on Tuesday he
expected an early resolution of talks on a free trade area agreement giving
South Africa preferential access for some products to the European market.
[16] Council of Europe defers Croatia
STRASBOURG - The Council of Europe decided on Tuesday to postpone Croatia's
accession indefinitely pending progress on democratic reforms in the former
Yugoslav republic, a spokesman announced.

BRUSSELS - German Chancellor Helmut Kohl meets Commission President Jacques
Santer at 0930 GMT; Santer and Kohl hold joint news conference at 1250 GMT.

Commissioner de Silguy holds news confernce on economic guidelines, public
deficit and macro-economic forecasts at 1500 GMT; Commissioner Fischler
communication on means of support in favour of British beef producers.
BRUSSELS - Standing veterinary committee meeting to discuss Commission
proposal for easing ban on British beef tallow, gelatine and semen exports
begins at 0800 GMT.
BRUSSELS - Sixth meeting of EU foreign ministers' representatives to discuss
