[01] EU ban on British beef to stay
LUXEMBOURG - Britain won carefully-worded support on Monday in its battle to
get an EU ban on beef exports lifted, but fell a long way short of its target
to get clear signals that the mad cow-inspired embargo would go soon.
[02] EU vets to meet on UK mad cow ban
LUXEMBOURG - European Union veterinary specialists will meet on Tuesday to
discuss specific aspects of the European Union's ban on exports of British
beef, but cannot take any formal decisions on relaxing the month-old
embargo.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Commission on Monday criticised Britain's
implementation of measures to mark, monitor and control the movement of cattle
suffering mad cow disease, warning of implications for selective slaughter.

LUXEMBOURG - EU Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler told farm ministers on Monday
that he was ready to negotiate extra aid for beef producers harmed by
collapsing markets due to the mad cow crisis.

LUXEMBOURG - Several EU farm ministers attacked proposals on Monday to reduce
cereals monthly storage payments in 1996/97, EU officials said.

LUXEMBOURG - European Union farm ministers shelved until next month efforts to
agree on the reform of the fruit and vegetable market, EU diplomats said on
Monday.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Commission, responding to pressure from EU farm
ministers, said on Monday it would make a proposal by July for the 1997/98
cereals and oilseed set-aside rate.

BRUSSELS - The European Union and Japan signalled progress on deregulation
issues on Monday while leaving various issues to smolder after their first
ministerial meeting since November 1994.

GENEVA - Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan said on Monday he had been told
the United States was moving towards declaring that offers from Asia were not
enough for a pact liberalising global telecoms.

BRUSSELS - European Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan said world trade
negotiators must tackle U.S reservations about satellite personal
communications before agreeing a full deal on telecommunications.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it would start monitoring
the European Union's imports of certain steel cables, which it said have
increased sharply at prices that undercut EU producers.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission has been in contact with the French
authorities about a possible plan to rescue property-lending bank Credit
Foncier de France, European Commission sources said on Monday.

party peace plan for the Korean peninsula.
