[02] Ozkirac: "Ozersay told us that it is a dream and a lie the transferring of electricity from Turkey with cables"

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen (06.09.19) reports that the "chairman" of the "trade union electricity authority" (El-Sen), Kubilay Ozkirac, stated yesterday that so-called deputy prime minister and "foreign minister" Kudret Ozersay told them that "the transferring of electricity from Turkey via underwater cables is a dream and lie".

EL-Sen trade union went on a 24 hour- strike yesterday in front of the "KIB-TEK" ("Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority's headquarters", expressing their opposition to the "economic protocol signed between Turkey and the TRNC" which envisages the privatization of "KIBT-TEK" and also aims to the "manipulation of society" by the Turkish private company AKSA.

Speaking during a gathering in front of the "prime ministry office", Ozkirac referred to the meeting they held with Ozersay, stating the following: "After a reference made by Ozersay during a meeting, the reality has been revealed. Ozersay said: 'My partner (UBP) opposes to this (for investment to take place in the organization). He also said something else. That it is a dream and a big lie that electricity from Turkey with underwater cables to be transferred to the country".

Ozkirac pointed out further that the decision for an investment to take place in "KIB-TEK" is still under discussion at the "tender commission" and reiterated the position that "state organizations" have thousands of millions debts, which have to be paid to "KIB-TEK". Ozkirac added that with the allowance given to AKSA, the electricity problem in the "TRNC" could be solved.

According to the paper, Turk-Sen and Devis Trade Unions also attended and expressed their support to EL-Sen strike.

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi (06.09.19) reports that the Social Democracy Party (TDP) chairman Cemal Ozyigit expressed support to the strike and called on the "ministers" of the People's Party (HP) to keep their promises on the issue of buying new generators. Ozyight called on the UBP to "back off from scenarios that would make AKSA necessary for the country".

[03] Kibris Postasi editor-in-chief argues that things are not going well with the occupied airport of Tymbou

Editor-in-chief of Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper Kibris Postasi (06.09.19), Rasih Resat writes in his column that things are not going very well for Emrullah Turanli, owner of the company T&T, which operates "Ercan airport" [translator's note: the occupied airport of Tymbou]. He further wrote that during a presentation of the new terminal of the airport, they were told that the new terminal would open by the end of 2019, later this date was extended to March 2020.

However, Resat believes that there is no possibility to catch up with the 2020 tourism season and explains: "In other words, the fees that the Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, Atlas and all other airline companies pay to T&T for using Ercan airport, will go to the TRNC treasury until T&T repays its loan. It means, that there is not a physical foreclosure to Ercan, but a foreclosure has been imposed to the revenues. […] in the coming days the collection of revenues of the T&T will begin to flow into the ministry of finance [translator's note: of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus]. Emrullah Turnali is not very happy with this Ercan business. […] It is said that Turanli wants to sell this place [the operation of Ercan airport] to another investor as soon as possible."

The problem, as Resat explains, is that there is no interest from investors and in addition to this, as it was expressed in the agreement, "the TRNC state" [translator's note: the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus] should also give its consent.

Resat concludes the commentary as follows: "All I know is that things are not going well at the only operating airport of the country [translator's note: the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus] and heralding things will get worse with each passing day".

[04] Diyalog general manager says that they should utilize the Immovable Property Commission

Resat Akar, general manager of the Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper Diyalog (06.09.19), in his column under the title "Politics and country", argues that they haven't utilized correctly the role of the Immovable Property Commission (IPC), which has been considered by the European Court of Human Rights as an effective domestic remedy for property claims.

Akar writes that if they had evaluated better this opportunity which was given to them instead of doing politics, thousands of Greek Cypriots properties would have turned into Turkish properties by now, adding: "In this way, the propaganda of the Greek Cypriot side 'invasion and occupation' would have collapsed".

He further writes that Turkish President Erdogan has brought this issue into the agenda during a meeting with the "government coalition" in Ankara, adding: "Erdogan had pointed out to them that they have to activate the IPC and he even proposed to the TRNC government to pass a law regarding this through the parliament".

[01] Donmez: "Turkey accelerates exploration in Eastern Mediterranean"

Turkish Daily Sabah (06.09.19-https://www.dailysabah.com/energy/2019/09/06/turkey-accelerates-exploration-in-eastern-mediterranean) reports that Turkey's Energy Minister Fatih Donmez elaborated on Turkey's ongoing hydrocarbon exploration operations in the Eastern Mediterranean and highlighted that the country has fortified its presence in the region with two drilling vessels, the Fatih and the Yavuz, and two seismic vessels, the Barbaros Hayreddin and the Oruç Reis.

"We have secured a great momentum in our operations for the exploration of resources in the Eastern Mediterranean," Donmez said.

"We will never allow the usurpation and appropriation of the rights of the Turkish community on the hydrocarbon resources in the island [Cyprus]. Turkey will continue to exercise its rights ensuing from international law in its sovereign continental shelf," Donmez added.

[02] Erdogan: "Turkey to initiate Syria safe zone by end-September"; he threats opening gates to Europe if no help on refugees is given

Ankara Anatolia news agency (05.09. 19-https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/turkey-to-initiate-syria-safe-zone-by-end-september/1573893) reported that Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday that Turkey will start to apply its own plan of action by the end of September in order to establish a safe zone in northern Syria, east of the Euphrates River.

"Turkey is determined to actively initiate the formation of a safe zone in Syria along the eastern line of the Euphrates River in its own way by the last week of September," Erdogan told a meeting of provincial heads of his ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party in the capital Ankara.

Erdogan also reiterated Turkey's determination to continue its energy exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean.

"No one can try to deprive us of the rights we have in the Eastern Mediterranean. We will champion our rights through the last," said Erdogan.

"The threat of sanctions on our country does not scare us, does not make us retreat, on the contrary only strengthens our determination to go our way," he added.

(…)Turning to the issue of Syrian refugees, Erdogan stressed that Turkey has not gotten the support it needs, especially from the EU, on sharing the refugee burden. "We may have to let them cross into Europe to get support," Erdogan added.

Turkey has long complained that the EU failed to keep its promises of monetary support under a 2016 deal to stem the tide of refugees.

Erdogan added that Turkey aims to settle at least 1 million of the Syrians it took in since 2011 in its planned safe zone along Turkey's border with Syria.

Turkey currently hosts some 3.6 million Syrian refugees, more than any other country in the world, but has also helped Syrians voluntarily resettle in areas made safe by the Turkish military.

Turkey has stressed that clearing the area of the terrorist PKK/YPG is a necessary condition for the safe zone.

Meanwhile, Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (05.09.19-http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-needs-support-from-international-community-on-refugees-unchr-chief-146328) reported that the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has called on the international community to provide support and show solidarity to Turkey and other host countries that have been hosting millions of Syrian refugees since the start of the civil war in the Middle Eastern country.

"Refugee situations will exist as long as there are conflicts. Ending refugee situations requires political solutions, but until that happens, host countries, including Turkey, and host communities need support and solidarity from the international community," said Grandi, according to a written statement by the UNHCR on Sept. 5.

Grandi held meetings in Ankara and met with Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, Family, Labor and Social Services Minister Zehra Zumrut and Deputy Education Minister Reha Denemeç, as well as Director General Abdullah Ayaz, and staff of the Directorate General of Migration Management, the state institution responsible for refugees in Turkey.

(…)In his meetings with the government, Grandi reiterated the UNHCR's commitment to continue its cooperation with and support for Turkey, recognizing its important role as the country hosting the largest refugee population in the world for five consecutive years. The High Commissioner discussed recent developments in the region as well as in Turkey and received with appreciation assurances of Turkey's continued commitment to refugee protection. The situation in Idlib was also subject of the discussions, where a humanitarian catastrophe needs to be prevented and all done to protect civilians.

[03] CHP leader warns of 'millions of more refugees' amid Idlib tension

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (05.09.19-http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/chp-leader-warns-of-millions-of-more-refugees-amid-idlib-tension-146329) reported that the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu has said that 3.5 million more Syrians could come to Turkey due to what he called the government's "failing policies," amid recent attacks on the last rebel-held enclave of Idlib in northwestern Syria.

Once again saying that the government's Syria policy has been wrong all along, Kilicdaroglu added: "You will see another 3-3.5 million asylum seekers in the future."

"Don't get angry with Syrian refugees," he said on Sept. 5 at his party's meeting. "Those getting angry with Syrians should rather focus on the government. Who brought the Syrians here?" he asked.

"You have to be angry with their policies. There was a war, and they escaped the war. Yes, let them go to their own country, but there must be peace first," he stated.

Citing recent regime attacks in Idlib, Kilicdaroglu warned of a "massive refugee influx" to Turkey's border. "Yes, we don't want this, but you should instead say, 'I don't want the person who put this policy into practice. I don't want this.'"

Referring to the economic problems in Turkey, Kilicdaroglu said that those suffering from economic difficulties are the ones who are from low-income segments of their society.

The economic policies of Turkey are not managed well, he said. "Turkey is swinging. There is an economic crisis. Who pays its burden? The ordinary citizens," he stated.

"We have opened a new page in politics, we don't want a fight," he said, stressing that Turkey was surrounded by problems in the region and did not want to have a dispute over this situation.

[04] Turkish Foreign Ministry summons Lebanese Ambassador

Ankara Anatolia news agency (05.09.19-https://www.aa.com.tr/en/politics/turkish-foreign-ministry-summons-lebanese-ambassador/1574362) reported that the Turkish Foreign Ministry has summoned Lebanese Ambassador to Ankara over the provocative actions made outside of the Turkish Embassy in Beirut, according to a diplomatic source on Thursday.

On Thursday morning, despite all the warnings issued by the police, a group of 8-10 provocateurs hung a piece of rug with an intimidating message on the entrance door of the Turkish Embassy's Consular Service, said the source on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

The Foreign Ministry conveyed its concern to Lebanese envoy Gassan Muallim, saying a group of people being able to approach to the entrance gate of the consular service is worrisome in terms of the security of the Turkish mission.

Turkey also called on Lebanese authorities to take necessary security measures "without any delay" for the protection of all Turkish interests in Lebanon, especially Turkey's Embassy in Beirut, the source said.
