[01] Turkish Cypriot politicians evaluate the UN report

Illegal Bayrak (16.10.18) broadcast statements of Turkish Cypriot politicians regarding the report of the UN Secretary General which was presented to the United Nations Security Council by Antonio Guterres yesterday.

"Prime minister" Tufan Erhurman (http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=erhurman-evaluates-report) in a statement on his social media account, said that Guterres' statement that "continued support for a horizon of endless process without result lies behind us" was significant.

Reminding that the UN in its report pointed out that it will only provide support for a result-oriented and a time-tabled process, Erhurman stressed that this was realistic if efforts will be made for a solution.

He also said that Guterres in his report once again reiterated that "the natural resources found in and around Cyprus should benefit both communities and should provide a strong incentive for all concerned parties to work in earnest towards a mutually acceptable and durable solution".

Saying that both sides had the right on the natural resources found around Cyprus and that therefore these should be shared, Erhurman stated: "Tension would make both sides lose however succeeding in sharing will make both sides win."

On his part, "foreign minister" Kudret Ozersay (http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=ozersay-evaluates-report ) stated on his social media account, that "the UN Secretary General has made a realistic and a down-to earth-evaluation" and reminded that the report pointed out that before full-edged negotiations could be resumed, the sides had to agree on the terms of reference that would constitute the consensus starting point for a possible negotiated conclusion to the Cyprus problem.

Stating that it was important that the report instead of an approach to resume the talks from where it left off pointed out that the sides should agree on terms of reference that would constitute the consensus starting point for a possible negotiated conclusion to the Cyprus problem, Ozersay said: "Guterres urged the parties to mobilise "their creativity and commitment to help their communities understand and support the aim of a durable solution".

Noting that the UN Chief said that 'while the UN can assist the parties an enduring solution to the Cyprus problem is for the Cypriots to decide' he said "in summary, it is positive that the UN abstained from trapping the Cyprus issue into certain templates."

Finally, the former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat (http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=cyprus-report-tops-the-agenda ) also issued a statement to TAK saying that "the Turkish Cypriot people were the ones most affected by the deadlocks experienced at the Cyprus talks".

Talat said that "both sides have said what they were going to say and have exhausted their funds. The ball is in the UN's court. For the process to rejuvenate the UN must adopt a serious stance".

He also said that the Greek Cypriot leader Nicos Anastasiades by not accepting the Guterres framework and putting forward the idea of a loose federation was trying to deviate from the path towards a solution.

Touching upon Mr. Anastasiades's meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in New York, Talat said that this meeting led to concerns that the Turkish Cypriots were being bypassed and added that this meeting taking place was unacceptable.

"This meeting did nothing more than butter up the Greek Cypriot side" said Talat.

He concluded by saying that the only way a permanent solution can be found to the Cyprus problem is through a process in which the Turkish Cypriots are a part of.

[02] Cavusoglu: "It is meaningless to sit at the table only for the sake of starting negotiations"

Turkish Cypriot daily K?br?s Postas? newspaper(16.10.18, http://www.kibrispostasi.com/c35-KIBRISHABERLERI/n265732-cavusoglu-kibrista-sirf-muzakereye-baslamak-icin-masaya-otur) reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has referred to the Cyprus negotiations and alleged that "sitting at the table again only for the sake of starting negotiations in Cyprus is not meaningful, it should be fruitful".

Addressing the opening ceremony of a symposium under the title "Law and Politics in Eastern Mediterranean" in Ankara, at the presence of Kudret Ozersay, self-styled foreign minister of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, Cavusoglu also said that they will continue their drillings around the island and alleged: "Our grievance is not to quarrel with anyone, but the fair sharing of the wealth".

[03] The occupation army denies information that it gave "green line" for new crossing points opening in Nicosia

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis (15.10.18) writes that the Commander of the Turkish occupation Forces denied yesterday's report on Havadis according to which the commander of the so-called security forces ("GKK") has examined on the spot the Famagusta Gate and Pafos Gate areas in the occupied part of Nicosia, reached the conclusion that the opening of the two crossing points will not cause problems from the point of view of security and gave his approval for the continuation of the efforts in this direction.

Havadis writes today that it was noted to the paper that the Commander of the Turkish occupation Forces had neither examined nor approved the opening of the two new crossing points.

[04] Harmanci states that he held contacts for the opening of new crossing points in Nicosia

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis (15.10.18) writes that the Turkish Cypriot "mayor" of the occupied part of Nicosia Mehmet Harmanci stated that he held contacts last week with the so-called presidency, the "prime minister's office" the "ministry of foreign affairs" and the so-called security forces ("GKK") for the opening of the Famagusta Gate and Pafos Gate areas in the occupied part of Nicosia.

[05] Erkmen compares the Orams' case with a lawsuit submitted by a Greek Cypriot at the Republic of Cyprus District Court regarding the usurpat?on of his property in occupied Agios Amvrosios village

Turkish Cypriot daily Diyalog newspaper (16.10.18) under the title: "The threat is starting now", reports on statements by Ayfer Said Erkmen, chairman of the "Immovable Property Commission" ("IPC"), who in exclusive statements to the paper, referred to the appeal at the Republic of Cyprus District Court by a Greek Cypriot regarding the illegal construction which took place on his property at Agios Amvrosios village in occupied Keryneia. Referring to the wish for the detention of the three persons, two Turkish Cypriot building contractors and the British buyer of the property, Erkmen claimed that serious threats will arise after this development.

Referring to the court case filed at the Greek Cypriot court against the buyer and the constructors, Erkmen said that it would not be possible to intervene in the case and stated that the "persons accused" might be fined with the sentence to be announced by the Greek Cypriot court.

Erkem, referring to the case of the Greek Cypriots, alleged that this case is similar to the Orams' case in the past. "And this because we know that the verdict of the Greek Cypriot court will be automatically become accepted by the European Council court members", Erkmen further said.

[06] Baybars announces "amendments" on the "citizenship law"

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (16.10.18) reports that the so-called minister of interior, Aysegul Baybars, has stated that they had prepared and will soon introduce in the "ministerial council" a new "bill", according to which new "regulations" will take place on the "citizenship issue and the white cards".

In an interview to illegal BRT, Baybars stated that they will submit the "bill" to the "ministerial council" by the end of the month and explained that with this "bill", they will undertake more strict measures on how they "grant the TRNC's citizenship", while at the same time, they will provide conveniences to the "investors" who wish to "invest" in the "TRNC".

Supporting the view that the increase on the number of the citizens in one country and the "granting of citizenship to people with difference cultures" could change a country's faith, demographic structure, identity and culture, Baybars alleged that this is the main reason they have decided to implement more strict measures on the "citizenship law" .

Among the topics addressed in their closed-door meeting was the case of missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, which Hunt said remains "deeply concerning".

"The UK fully supports the Turkish investigation into the incident as I reiterated in person to Mr. Cavusoglu today," Hunt said.

"We have been urging Saudi Arabia to cooperate fully with the investigation. There remain questions about the disappearance of Mr. Khashoggi that only Saudi Arabia can answer."

Hunt said the UK welcomes Saudi King Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's agreement yesterday to establish a joint working group to look into the matter.

Cavusoglu and Hunt also talked about bilateral and regional relations, the agreement between Turkey and Russia to establish a demilitarized zone in Idlib, Syria, the fight against terrorism and Brexit, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.

[04] Turkey suspends 259 local officials for 'terror links'

Turkish Hurriyet Daly News (16.10.18 http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-suspends-259-local-officials-for-terror-links-137906) reports that Turkey has suspended 259 senior local officials over alleged terror links and activities unrelated to their posts, the Interior Ministry said on Oct. 15.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu removed 259 local neighborhood heads—"muhtar" in Turkish—from their posts, his office said in a statement.

It did not provide further details on what terror organizations the officials were allegedly linked to.

The muhtar is the elected chief of a village or a city neighborhood and is responsible for day-to-day services for residents such as registration.

Turkey has suspended 140,000 public sector employees because of alleged links to the illegal PKK and FETO, widely believed to have orchestrated the July 2016 failed coup attempt.

Last week, the Ministry suspended 559 village guards—locals employed to combat PKK militants—accused of links to terror organizations, while 76 were accused of human trafficking and drug-related crimes.
