[01] Akinci called the Greek Cypriot side to give up its "domination efforts" towards the Turkish Cypriots

According to illegal Bayrak television (08.08.18, http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=54th-anniversary-of-erenkoy-resistance), the 54th "anniversary" of the "Erenkoy resistance" ("occupied Kokkina resistance"), was marked today with a ceremony at the occupied Kokkina Martyrs cemetery.

The event was attended by Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Ak?nc?, the "speaker" of the so-called assembly Teberruken Ulucay, the so-called prime minister Tufan Erhurman, the so-called foreign minister Kudret Ozersay, so-called minister of finance, Serdar Denktas, so-called minister of education Cemal Ozyigit, so-called commander of the Turkish invasion army, "major general" Yilmaz Yildirim, and the "commander of the Turkish peace forces Brigidair general", Tevfik Algan as well as other "high ranking state and government officials".

(…)Delivering a speech during the ceremony, Akinci expressed his "respect to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in occupied Kokkina. Alleging that the only thing the Turkish Cypriot "people" had desired since the very beginning of the Cyprus problem was to live freely and peacefully in Cyprus, Ak?nc? claimed that the Turkish Cypriots, unlike the Greek Cypriots have never had aspirations to impose their authority, rule or control over the other community.

Ak?nc? alleged further that the root cause of the Cyprus problem is the Greek Cypriot side's aspirations of being the sole owner of the island. "The only thing the Turkish Cypriots wanted and want is to live freely and peacefully on this island without being forced under the domination of the other community", Akinci further argued.

Alleging that the Turkish Cypriot "people" owed the martyrs a debt, he claimed that that debt is the "establishing a better system of rule and administration".

Akinci alleged further that there are numerous domestic problems that could be solved in the absence of a settlement on the island. He, however, argued that did not mean the Turkish Cypriot side will not continue to work for a comprehensive settlement on the island.

He further pointed out that every little step taken towards improving the "TRNC" would eventually contribute to the Turkish Cypriot "people's" welfare as and when a settlement is reached.

Alleging that the conflict in the past had had a cost for both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots on the island, Ak?nc? called on the Greek Cypriot side to abandon its "intransigence" and to acknowledge that the island belongs to both the Turkish Cypriot "people" and the Greek Cypriot people.

Also touching upon the hydrocarbons issue, Ak?nc? recalled that any natural resources discovered off the coast of Cyprus is the property of both sides and warned that failure to share these resources could ignite new tensions and conflicts in the region.

He concluded his speech by calling on the Greek Cypriots to exercise common sense and to work with the Turkish Cypriot side for a better and brighter future on the island.

[02] "Ankara has not abandoned its Plan B based on confederation"

Writing in his column in Turkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris newspaper (08.08.18), Cuneyt Oruc reports that Ankara has not abandoned its Plan B based on a confederation in Cyprus, which was brought onto the agenda by the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mevlut Cavusoglu during one of his recent visits in the occupied area of the island and a meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Akinci and political party leaders.

Under the title "The Greek Cypriot game is being spoiled", Oruc refers to information published in the Greek Cypriot press regarding UNSG's special envoy to Cyprus, Jane Lute's visit and the reference that Antonio Guterres expects an agreement to be achieved between the sides on how they will bridge the differences in all six points of his Framework before interfering for the resumption of the Cyprus negotiations. The columnist interprets this as acceptance by the UN of self-styled foreign minister Kudret Ozersay's position that the negotiating process could not resume from the point it has been left when it came to a deadlock. Oruc argues the following:

"[…] In a sense, this means that the Greek Cypriots could not take the negotiations to the point they wanted to drag them, or rather it is tantamount to the fact that the game plan of the south has been spoiled. The Greek Cypriot press, which alleges that the Greek Cypriot side wishes a meeting to be arranged with Akinci through [UNSG's] good offices mission, argued, however, that the Turkish Cypriot side does not seem willing for this. In fact, we had started receiving signs of this in the recent statements of president Akinci. Although the third guarantor power, Britain, says that 'the bi-communal bi-zonal federation is the best solution', many things have changed. Even though Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu has not openly discussed the issue during his recent visit, Ankara has not abandoned its Plan B based on the 'confederation' that he had brought onto the agenda during his previous visit. Just like Lute's diplomatic initiatives will not be enough for the reestablishment of the table, it does not seem that the Cyprus problem will be discussed on its old platform within the forthcoming days. We are approaching the end of a half a century long negotiating marathon. Everybody should see this and form his policy accordingly".

[03] The occupation regime will reportedly ask for more money from Ankara

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (08.08.18) reports that the "government" of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus will ask for "a supplementary budget" from Turkey, [because of the economic crisis deriving from Turkish Lira's (TL) devaluation]. The "government" is waiting for a reply to its request for a meeting with Ankara, according to journalist Vatan Mehmet, who writes that in spite of "prime minister" Erhurman's statements that they will not ask for money during their visit to Ankara, the main aim of the meeting with Turkey is to discuss economic issues, the "budget deficit" and the demand for a "supplementary budget". Turkey has not yet replied to this demand, the report says.

It is expected that the meeting will be materialized soon and that other current issues will also be discussed, such as the "2019-2021 Economic Program" between Turkey and the breakaway regime, the "legal and practical difficulties" which exist in the occupied area in the so-called struggle against Fethullah Gulen (FETO) organization, the transfer of electricity with cables from Turkey and the lawsuits against "Afrika" newspaper.

It is said that Turkey is irritated about the crisis experienced a few weeks ago on the issue of the diplomas [of theological college students wearing a scarf], the stance of the "government" on the issue of the "freedom in education" and statements made by some "ministers" and "deputies" of parties, which participate in the "coalition government".

Meanwhile, referring to the meeting, self-styled finance minister of the breakaway regime, Serdar Denktas argued that the delay in its materialization derives only from the new system implemented in Turkey and the heavy schedule in Ankara. Noting that this is normal, Denktas criticized the opposition for trying to "drag the issue elsewhere".

[04] Arikli calls on the "coalition government" to get rid of the TDP

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (08.08.18) reports that Erhan Arikli, leader of the Revival Party (YDP), participating on a TV programme, criticized the Socialist Democracy Party (TDP), which is partner of the "coalition government" and called on the "government" to get rid of the TDP and then they are going to give them unlimited support.

Arikli criticized harshly Cemal Ozyigit, "minister of national education" and leader of TDP, because he supports the religious lessons to be elective.

[05] Denktas: "It is important for the uncertainty on the Cyprus problem to end"

According to illegal Bayrak television (08.08.18, http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=denktas-speaks-on-cyprus-problem-2), Serdar Denktas, self-styled finance minister has claimed that waiting for something to happen without the Greek Cypriot side changing its stance on the Cyprus problem is nothing more than a big waste of time.

Evaluating the latest developments on a TV program, Denktas argued that nothing will happen on the Cyprus issue as long as the Greek Cypriot side did not change its stance. "I'm not in support of the idea of resuming talks until the Greek Cypriot side makes its intentions clear. However should the negotiations resume we need to ask the question as to what the fate of the Turkish Cypriots will become if that process too fails" he said adding that the UN should be responsible in determining that. Denktas also pointed out that it is important for the uncertainty on the Cyprus problem to end.

Also touching upon relations with Turkey, Denktas said that the delay in receiving an appointment with Ankara was due to transition to the new system in Turkey and the busy program of Turkish officials.

Pointing out that this is normal; Denktas criticized the opposition for attempting to create the impression that there are other reasons for the delay. "It doesn't matter who is in government in Turkey or the TRNC, relations between the two countries will always be good and will continue", he added.

Also commenting on the "state budget", Denktas said that currently the biggest problem being experienced is paying agricultural subsidies. He pointed out that an unexpected drought and the battle against disease in livestock had led to delays in payments.

Denktas further explained that intense efforts were underway to minimize the impact of the economic crisis on the public.

Stressing that there was a need to change the system regarding the minimum wage, Denktas said that he had discussed the matter and he is in full agreement with the self-styled minister of labour and social security to establish a system where the minimum wage would change according to the different economic sectors.

[06] CTP visited the crossing point of Deryneia

Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin sesi newspaper (08.08.18) reports that members of the Republican Turkish party (CTP), Asim Akansoy, Dogus Derya, Fikri Toros and Sila Usar Incirli visited yesterday the area of Deryneia to inspect the works regarding the opening of the Deryneia crossing point.

Ali Koruk, "4th infantry regiment commander", briefed them on the ongoing works. He explained that the asphalting works on the buffer zone have been finished; the project will go out to tender in August and only control points have remained to be placed. He concluded by saying that when these works finish then it will be opened.

Speaking to the press on behalf of the group, Akansoy noted that work to open the crossing points in Deriyneia and Apliki are continuing. He added that the opening of them is important for small businesses as much as it is for both communities. He further said: "If Deryneia crossing point was open during this period, then tourists would flow from north to south. It would have been very good for this economic crisis. At least, the merchants and the residents of Famagusta would have felt relieved".

Noting that the necessary inspections were made at the Deryneia crossing point, he said they will share their evaluations with the Turkish Cypriot leader and the "government".

Announcing that they will also visit the Apliki crossing point on Friday, Akansoy said their aim is to accelerate the initiatives towards the opening of the crossing points.

According to the paper, this campaign evoke strong reactions in social media since there were persons who considered the account fake, while, some others claimed that the account was not fake and started praying.

[02] Turkey sends delegation to US to discuss crisis

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (07.08.18-http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkey-sends-delegation-to-us-to-discuss-crisis-135561) reported that a Turkish delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal left for Washington Aug. 7 to resolve the current crisis in relations after the U.S. slapped sanctions against Turkey over the detention of pastor Andrew Brunson, while the two sides' Foreign Ministers held a phone call on the same day, in a sign of wanting to put diplomacy back on track.

Officials from Turkey's Justice, Finance and Foreign Ministries make up the nine-member delegation going to Washington, according to diplomatic sources who asked to remain anonymous. The meeting is expected to take place on Aug. 8.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had a phone conversation, private broadcaster CNN Turk reported.

Turkey and the U.S. are currently experiencing rocky relations after the U.S. imposed sanctions on Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu and Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul over the continued detention of Brunson, who faces terrorism charges in Turkey.

It was earlier reported that Turkey and the U.S. reached a preliminary agreement on some issues after the crisis. According to sources speaking to daily Hurriyet, the agreement covers "certain subjects" and a Turkish delegation is scheduled to visit Washington DC in the coming days to "precede" the talks.

[03] AKP: "Foreign exchange markets will calm down sooner or later"

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (07.08.18-http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/foreign-exchange-markets-will-calm-down-sooner-or-later-akp-135562) reported that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) vice chair Cevdet Y?lmaz who is in charge of economic matters, has stated that the recent fluctuations in foreign exchange markets, which cannot be explained on economic grounds, will ease sooner or later.

He made his statement on Twitter on Aug. 7, one day after the Turkish Lira fell some 5.5% against the dollar, its biggest single day drop in nearly 10 years, after the Donald Trump administration said it was reviewing Turkey's duty free access to U.S. markets, a move that could affect $1.7 billion of Turkish exports.

"Turkey is a country with political stability and solid future goals. Some recent fluctuations in financial markets, which cannot be explained through any economic foundations, will calm down sooner or later," he said.

"The government's rational policies, budget discipline, reform programs and moral values help Turkey get over this temporary period", Y?lmaz also noted.

He also added that the government will maintain sustainable growth by decreasing the country's current account deficit and strengthening its structure against any speculations through financial diversification.

The lira gained nearly 2% on Aug. 7 to 5.26 against the dollar after broadcaster CNN Turk said that Turkish officials would go to Washington to discuss strained relations in two days. The lira was 5.28 per dollar late in the afternoon of Aug. 7.

(…)At the meantime, the United States Embassy in Ankara emphasized friendship with Turkey despite ongoing tensions.

"The United States continues to be a firm friend and ally of Turkey despite current tensions. Our countries have a vibrant economic relation," the Embassy said in a tweet on Aug. 7.
