[01] Nami says "the government is determined to bring electricity from Turkey through cables"

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (21.06.18) reports that Ozdil Nami, self-styled minister of economy and energy, who was a guest at the paper, made important statements regarding alternative energy resources, organized industrial zones and "KIB-TEK" ("Turkish Cypriot Electricity Authority").

Noting that the "ministry" continues its electricity assessments on energy needs to arise in the coming years and on the production capacity in the occupied area of Cyprus, Nami added that they conduct studies together with experts on other alternatives. He explained that these studies also include the project of bringing electricity via cables from Turkey, adding that they are making the necessary contacts on this subject. However, Nami said that their desire is to provide cheap, affordable and clean electricity.

He further said that the current production is enough to meet onsumption, but in the coming months they will make openings to provide more opportunities and benefits from solar energy.

Reiterating that they are looking with a very positive eye at bringing electricity from Turkey through cables, Nami said that they have started to see now that their energy needs can best met by bringing electricity through cables and benefiting from solar energy. He further said that they are in favour of this possibility, as long as it does not bring an additional cost to their customers in terms of cost. He noted that the emphasis is on the interconnected system regarding the transfer of electricity via cables and that they do not discuss the model with a guarantee of purchase.

Referring to the privatization of "KIB-TEK", Nami noted that it is not in the agenda. He added that "they will try to strengthen the existence of KIB-TEK and it will be a stable and reliable energy supply in the country".

Saying that they observed that there is also an increase of fuel purchase due to the people coming from the "south" (government controlled area of the Republic of Cyprus), Nami argued: " We see that the loss we suffer from renouncing the price stabilization fund is somewhat compensated with the increase of the consumption".

[02] Denktas made statements about the cost of living and the annulment of "citizenships"

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (21.06.18) reports that Serdar Denktas stated that the current year will be difficult for the breakaway regime since the economic protocol with Turkey was only "signed" the previous week

He also stated that the cost of living is very high and it is not reflected in the salaries of the "people"; therefore they will adopt additional measures every two months so this would change.

He also made statements about the "citizenships" and stated that information was missing from some files of the persons who were "granted the TRNC citizenship" by the previous "government"; therefore they had to annul the "citizenships".

[03] Conservation of Ravelin Bastion in occupied Famagusta was completed

Turkish Cypriot illegal Bayrak (20.06.18, http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=conservation-works-completed-at-akkule) broadcast that the completion of conservation and reinforcement work at the Ravelin Bastion, which is an essential part of the historic walls of occupied Famagusta, was marked with a ceremony at the site on Tuesday. The project was realized upon an initiative by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage and funded and carried out by the UNDP and the EU.

Delivering an opening speech at the event, the Head of Unit – Structural Reform Support Service of the European Commission, Kjartan Bjornsson, said the old city of Famagusta continued to be a valuable post, full of history and cultural heritage. He also noted that the European Commission was delighted to have been able to fund the project, which was a clear example of how Cypriots could work together for peace.

For his part, the Turkish Cypriot member and the Co-President of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, Ali Tuncay, said that the committee did not only repair the stones of historical monuments but also addressed the past, soul and longing of people. "With our work we are not only restoring the monuments but we are also creating the atmosphere for building the most needed confidence and culture of peace between the Turkish and the Greek Cypriots", he added.

In his address, the Greek Cypriot member and the Co-President of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, Takis Hadjidemetriou, said that "it is our responsibility to safeguard what we have inherited and, to the extent possible, add our own small mark to it". "This can only be done in a spirit of collaboration, common direction and common objectives under conditions of peace", he noted.

For her part, the UN Secretary General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, congratulated the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage for its successful work.

UNDP Cyprus Programme Manager, Tiziana Zennaro, said that the work of the committee was important for permanent peace and the target of building confidence between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris newspaper (21.06.18) reports that two organizations, the Famagusta Initiative and the Famagusta Our City, have protested for the verbal diplomatic note by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in Cyprus asking them not to visit the historic monuments in the occupied area of the island. In a written statement the organizations expressed their satisfaction with the conservation of the Ravelin Bastion in occupied Famagusta and the protection of Cyprus' cultural heritage without discriminations as regards religion, language and race. They argued that the participation in the ceremony constitutes a serious reply to the efforts to prevent access to Cyprus' common cultural heritage.

Finally, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (21.06.18) refers to the issue and reports that representatives from 12 countries in Cyprus attended the event: the High Commissioner of Britain, the Ambassadors of Ireland, Spain, Italy, Austria Germany, Slovakia, Finland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria as well as the Charge d'affaires of the USA and the Netherlands. The paper draws attention to the fact that no "deputy" or "minister" of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus attended the ceremony.

[04] "Martyr Lt. Caner Gonyeli 2018 exercise" completed

According to illegal Bayrak television (21.06.18-http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=martyr-lt-caner-gonyeli-2018-exercise-completed) the "Martyr Lieutenant Caner Gonyeli 2018 Search and Rescue Exercise" was completed yesterday following the second stage which was held off the coast of occupied Famagusta. Teams from Turkey and the occupation regime participated in the exercise.

Two separate scenarios were played out during yesterday's exercise. In the first scenario, emergency teams rescued illegal immigrants from the water after the cargo ship they were travelling in collided with a commercial ship. The second scenario involved emergency teams putting out a fire on board a cargo ship and rescuing crew who jumped deck.

The "commander of the Turkish peace forces in the TRNC", "major general" Y?lmaz Y?ld?r?m, the"commander of the Turkish Cypriot security forces brigadier general" Tevfik Algan, the "acting commander of the Turkish coast guard admiral" Bulent Olcay, the "air commodore" Yusuf Erge, the "rear admiral" Onder Gurbuz from the Turkish Navy and Brigadier General Fedai Unsal from the Office of the Turkish Chief of General Staff, watched the exercise.

[05] Eighteen Syrian refugees were caught inside a TIR cargo

[01] Erdogan says 'may seek coalition if fails to get majority'

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (21.06.18-http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/erdogan-says-may-seek-coalition-if-fails-to-get-majority-133568) reports that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in an interview late on June 20 that his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) could seek to form a coalition if it fails to secure a parliamentary majority in the elections on June 24.

Polls indicate the elections may be closer than anticipated when he called the snap elections in April, suggesting he may be pushed to a second-round run-off for the presidency, and his AKP could lose its majority in the 600-seat assembly.

"If it is under 300 [seats], then there could be a search for a coalition," Erdogan said in an interview with Kral FM radio station. He added that the probability of this was "very, very low."

The AKP has formed an alliance with the nationalist MHP before the elections, which will herald a switch to a new powerful executive presidency narrowly approved in a referendum last year. Opposition parties have also formed an alliance.

MHP leader Devlet Bahceli said on June 18 that another election could be held if his alliance with the AKP cannot form a majority in parliament after Sunday's vote.

[02] CHP presidential candidate Ince: "Our choice is the West"

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (20.061.8-http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/our-choice-is-west-chp-presidential-candidate-ince-says-133528) reported that Muharrem Ince, the main opposition Republican People's Party's (CHP) presidential candidate, has vowed to repair Turkey's strained ties with the European Union, stressing that their "choice is the West."

"I have spoken to some Ambassadors and told them they should not force us to change our choice [of the West]. Immediately after I am elected President, I will tour the European capitals," Ince told a group of editors-in-chief and directors of newspapers and broadcasters in a meeting in Istanbul on June 20.

Ince announced that his "most urgent priority" is the justice system. "I do not care what the EU says, we will recognize cemevis as places of worship because it is the right of our Alevi citizens. Religious classes in schools will no longer be compulsory," he said.

"The EU wants us to do certain things. But there are things we should do for our people whether the EU wants it or not. Do we have to hear that we should fix our justice system from the EU? These things should be fixed even without the EU and I believe I have earned the trust of the EU as well," Ince said when asked about his foreign policy.

"We will not return to the past. Our parliamentary system in the past was bad, but the new one is even worse. We will change this. Even newspaper headlines are decided by one man. We will change that too," Ince promised.

Ince voiced confidence that he would be elected President after the June 24 elections, stressing he had never seen such energy during a campaign in his 30-year-long political career. "I am addressing huge crowds. There is an extraordinary groundswell," he said.

(…)

Ince also said he would accept IYI (Good) Party leader and presidential candidate Meral Aksener's offer to become her Vice President if she is elected as President in the upcoming elections.

"If I win the presidential election, I will offer vice President posts to Aksener and [Felicity Party's (SP) leader and presidential candidate] Temel Karamollaoglu," Ince added.

"I have often been asked if I will put Erdogan on trial if I am elected as President. I say 'no.' I am not in a position to try people. Putting people on trial is not my job," he said.

Ince also vowed to relentlessly continue to fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO), the group led by U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen which is widely believed to have been behind the July 2016 coup attempt.

Ince, however, said the government's recent military operations against PKK targets in the Kandil region on the Iraq-Iran border are part of plans to make political gains ahead of the elections.

[03] Bozdag: "Turkey to receive US F-35 jets on Thursday"

Ankara Anatolia news agency (20.06.18-https://www.aa.com.tr/en/todays-headlines/turkey-to-receive-us-f-35-jets-on-thursday-deputy-pm-/1179867) reported that Turkey is due to take delivery on Thrurday of F-35 jets it has purchased from the United States, according to Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag.

"Necessary contacts have been made with the U.S., and delivery of the F-35 jets will be on Thursday," Bozdag told reporters in the central Yozgat province on Wednesday.

Referring to recent U.S. congressional bills seeking to block the sale, he added that any attempt to make the sale conditional on the release of Andrew Brunson, a U.S. priest facing terrorism charges in Turkey, amounts to a "threat."

Delivery of the Lockheed Martin-made jets is due to take place at a ceremony in Texas, with the jets set to come to Turkey once the pilots have received training.
