[01] Erhurman says that the CTP has prepared a development plan for occupied Karpasia and will not establish "coalition" with the UBP

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (03.01.18) reports that Tufan Erhurman, chairman of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), has said that his party prepared a development plan for occupied Karpasia area focused on agriculture, alternative tourism and education. Erhurman met yesterday with journalists, columnists and administrators of newspapers and TV stations and briefed them on the CTP's so-called democratization package and "economic and social development program".

Erhurman noted that occupied Karpasia was determined as a priority area in their development plan and that their target is to create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people. He said that they intend to prepare a construction plan within two years by benefiting from the services of the private sector and "universities". Referring to the statement made by Huseyin Ozgurgun, chairman of the National Unity Party (UBP) that the UBP will tear out and throw away the so-called "decree for Karpasia", Erhurman argued that UBP's stance will destroy the area.

Replying to a question, Erhurman noted that the CTP will not establish a "coalition government" with the UBP and added that except for this statement they said nothing else on this issue. He argued that his party has prepared plans and programs for the "administration of the country" for the next 5, 10 and 15 years and will establish a "coalition" with those who are on the same line with them after discussing the issues. He said that as soon as he becomes "prime minister", the "council of ministers" will appoint special investigators for some cases and therefore establishing a "coalition" with the UBP is not possible.

Erhurman said also that the CTP will abolish the "provision" which gives the "council of ministers the right to compulsorily grant citizenship" to some persons and determine detailed criteria for "granting citizenship" to those who "contribute to the country" in various sectors. He also claimed that they will apply strict control on the issue of "granting work permit" to foreign workers.

[02] "Decree banning 26 organizations comes into force"

Illegal Bayrak (03.01.18 http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=decree-banning-26-organisations-comes-into-force) broadcast that "a decree regarding illegal terrorist organisations prepared by the council of ministers has come into force following its publication in the official gazette".

The "decree which has declared 26 organizations illegal, bans all their activities, flags, banners and the possession of photographs of its members".

According to the "decree the banned organizations" include the PKK terrorist organisation, DHKP/C (the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party), Al-Qaida, Hezbollah, EFEN (the National Sound of Hellenic Spirit Youth), CHRISI-AVGI (Golden Dawn), ELAM (the National Peoples' Front), KEA (the Hellenic Resistance Movement), the Black Brigade, KCK (the Kurdistan Communities Union), the PYD (the Kurdistan Democratic Union Party, YPG (the Peoples' Protection Units, ISIS (the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) and FETO (the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation).

[03] The results of the "elections" will emerge late

Illegal Bayrak (03.01.18 http://www.brtk.net/?englishposts=hec-head-sefik-issues-reminder) broadcast that the "head of the high electoral council and chief justice" Narin Sefik has said that the unofficial results of this Sunday's early "general elections" will most likely not emerge before the early hours of Monday morning.

In a meeting with journalists yesterday, Sefik reminded that media outlets will not be able to announce any results before 7pm "election day".

Stating that all results regarding to the "election" will be announced by Tuesday, the 9th of January, she said that the unofficial results which will reveal which parties passed the 5% "election" threshold and how many "deputies" from those parties made it into "parliament" will most likely not emerge before the early hours of Monday morning.

Sefik pointed out that "different from past elections, votes will not be counted in each district but will be counted and announced only by the high electoral council in Lefkosia".

Reminding that the campaign propaganda period will end at 6pm on Saturday, she said that "legal action will be launched against any party or candidate who violates the ban and continues to campaign after the 6pm deadline".

[04] Twenty six "governments" were "established" in the last 42 years in the occupied area of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (03.01.18) reports that twenty six "governments" have been "established" in the occupied area of Cyprus during the last 42 years. The paper notes that no one of these "governments" was able to complete its "term of duty". The National Unity Party (UBP) was on "duty" for 34 years, which is the longest period than any other party. The UBP did not participate in "coalitions" with other parties only in eight years since 1975. Former Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu holds the record of" establishing" a "government", as he became "prime minister" eight times.

The Democratic Party (DP) was in the "government" for 12 years and nine months through "establishing coalitions" with the UBP and the Republic Turkish Party (CTP). The CTP was in the "government" for 12 years and three months through "coalitions" with the UBP, DP and the Freedom and Reform Party (ORP) [Translator's note: The ORP had been established by Turgay Avci, who was also an UBP member. The party has been dissolved and Avci rejoined the UBP].

The paper points that the above statement by the Religious Affairs Directorate caused shock in Turkey, where a campaign was launched for the closure of the "Diyanet".

Turkey attaches great importance to the preservation of peace and stability of friendly and brotherly Iran. Therefore, taking into consideration the remarks of H.E. President Rouhani that people have the right to peaceful protest but should not violate the laws and damage public buildings, we believe that it is necessary to refrain from violence and not to give way to provocation.

We wish peace gets restored in the country as soon as possible and common sense prevails for preventing escalation while inflammatory discourse and external interventions are avoided."

[09] Turkish General Staff to recruit over 40,000 personnel as compensation for post-coup attempt dismissals

Turkish Hurriyet Daily News (03.01.18 http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-general-staff-to-recruit-over-40-000-personnel-as-compensation-for-post-coup-attempt-dismissals-125103) reports that the Turkish Armed Forces will recruit over 40,000 personnel in order to compensate for losses sustained following the 2016 coup attempt, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Jan. 2.

The army, under the auspices of the Defense Ministry, is set to recruit a total of 42,938 personnel, including 3,755 officers, 5,375 sergeants, 13,213 specialized sergeants and a total of 20,595 officers and privates working on contract.

Since the deadly coup attempt, 8,568 personnel identified as having "organic ties" with the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETO) have been dismissed from the military. These servicemen include 150 generals, 4,630 officers, 2,167 sergeants, 1,210 specialized sergeants and privates on contract, the agency reported.

Additionally, 16,409 military school students were dismissed and the schools shut down, Defense Minister Fikri Isik said on Dec. 10, 2016.

To compensate for the losses, the Defense Ministry has employed 15,850 persons of which 1,763 were taken on as officers, 4,135 as sergeants, 3,698 as specialized sergeants and 6,161 as privates on contract.

The Ministry will continue recruiting, the agency reported.

Since the coup attempt, more than 50,000 people, including civil servants and security personnel, have been jailed pending trial and some 150,000 suspended or dismissed from their jobs.

The Turkish government says the dismissals and arrests are necessary to tackle the security threats Turkey has been facing since the attempted takeover.

During an operation on March 16, 2017, anti-terror police raided a cell house in Istanbul's Kagithane district and detained two unidentified Uzbek nationals, who were preparing to carry out an attack similar to the one at Reina.

On Oct. 28, 2017, four ISIL suspects, including two females, were detained as they attempted to bomb a parking area in a shopping mall in Istanbul's Bayrampasa district.
