    [01] Akinci meets with Bagis

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (25.08.17) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci met yesterday at his office with Mustafa Aydin, head of the Board of Trustees of Istanbul Aydin University, and Egemen Bagis, head of Aydin University's Western Studies Centre and West Platform and Turkish former EU Minister and Chief Negotiator.

The paper recalls that Bagis had been removed from his duties upon allegations for corruption and bribery during the well-known "shoebox scandal". Bagis had been one of Turkish president Erdogan's favourites, notes the paper adding that he is still "respected" in Turkey but this respect has dropped to zero in Europe.

[02] The Trade Union Platform visited CTP

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (25.08.17) reports that the Trade Union Platform, in the context of its contacts with political parties in order to create a common ground for a joint struggle against the "social transformation policies" implemented in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, visited yesterday the Republican Turkish Party (CTP).

Turfan Erhuman, said that they discussed the developments in the agenda, adding that they, as CTP, are a party that will always cooperate with the trade unions. He added that they should work together and change this corrupted system in the occupied area of Cyprus.

Speaking on behalf of the Platform, Selma Eylem, chairperson of the Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers' Trade Union (KTOEOS), said that they should start a struggle with the support of every sector in order to create a public awareness. She added that CTP's contribution would be very important in this struggle. Eylem argued that with the Theological College, the Koran lessons, passing the "religious affairs law" and the opening of the Coordination office, are efforts to engineer a community and added that the political will of the Turkish Cypriots has been weakened. She concluded by saying that they expect support from the political parties.

[03] Three army officers were arrested in the occupied area of Cyprus within the framework of the operation against Fethullah Gulen

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (25.08.17) reports that three regular army officers who serve in the Turkish occupation army in Cyprus were arrested yesterday in the occupied northern part of the island and were taken to Turkey within the framework of the operation against Fethullah Gulen (FETO) and the Kurdish PYD organization. The paper notes that the arrests took place "without any procedure to be held in the TRNC".

The operation was simultaneously held in seven provinces of Turkey and in the occupied area of Cyprus. The centre of the operation, during which 14 army officers were arrested, was the Turkish city of Bayburt. The three arrested officers from the occupied area of Cyprus were serving in the above-mentioned Turkish city during the failed military coup held in Turkey on 15 July 2016.

[04] TKP-YG: Many plots of land have been sold to Israelis

Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (25.08.17) reports that Tozun Tunali, vice-chairman of the Communal Liberation Party – New Forces (TKP-YG), has said that many plots of land both in the occupied area of Cyprus and in the government controlled area of the island have been sold to Israelis and called on the breakaway regime's "government" to take measures on the issue, because the land of the "TRNC" would allegedly pass into the hands of Israelis within a decade.

In a written statement, Tunali noted that plots of land in occupied Trikomo area and its villages have been sold to people of Israeli origin and that one of the indications for this fact is the "right" given by the "council of ministers" to 31 foreigners to purchase plots of land in the occupied area of Cyprus.

He further said that, according to rumours, companies in the occupied area of Cyprus, lawyers and relatives of current and former "deputies" mediated in these sales of land.

Finally, Tunali argued that many plots of land had been sold in areas such as Kazivera, Vokolida, Keryneia, Agios Epiktitos, Trapeza and Akanthou and that plots are requested in Yialousa, Agia Triada, Karpass, Vokolida, Monagra, Trikomo and Spathariko.

[05] Atun alleges that the regime's economy has been continuously growing for the last seven years

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (25.08.17) reports that Sunat Atun, self-styled minister of economy and energy of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, has argued that with the development strategies they implement they have secured a visible increase of prosperity and stability in the "country", the economy has continuously been growing for the last seven years, the "budget deficits" have been covered and during the first seven months of 2017 they had a "budget" surplus of 242 million Turkish liras (TL).

Addressing the so-called "Regional Development and Clustering Summit" organized by the self-styled development bank with the contribution of the Turkish "embassy" in the occupied part of Nicosia, Atun said that 84 million TL of this surplus derived from resources given by Turkey and 171,8 million TL from local income.

Atun noted that, excluding the resources given by Turkey, the breakaway regime's "budget" income increased by 19,2% and that for the first time in their history, the "state's" current debt was covered and current surplus was secured.

Meanwhile, in his address, Ercan Ibrahimoglu, "director" of the so-called development bank, said that an "Industrial Strategy Report" has been prepared with the support of the stakeholders within the scope of the clustering of activities. He noted that the "development bank" considers providing technical and financial support to these activities and added that the results of the workshop that would take place after the panel would help in producing a road map.

[06] Erdogan's proposal for transferring water from the occupied area of Cyprus to Jordan excited two former "ministers"

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (25.08.17), under the title "The proposal to transfer water from the TRNC to Jordan has excited two former ministers" on its front page, reports that Turkey's President Erdogan's proposal to Jordanian King Abdullah to transfer water from the Anamur-"TRNC" undersea pipeline to Jordan has excited the former "minister of agriculture and natural resources" Ali Cetin Amcaoglu as well as former "minister of finance" Birikim Ozgur, who both contributed to the materialization of the water project.

Speaking to the paper, Amcaoglu said that the "protocol" signed with Turkey envisages the possibility of increasing the water amount in order to transfer to third countries in case Turkey and the breakaway regime agreed.

Amcaoglu and Ozgur said that if this proposal is implemented then the "TRNC" would be an important regional actor for water.

[07] Eroglu said that the Turkish Cypriots are not desperately in need of a Cyprus settlement

According to illegal Bayrak television (online, 25.08.17), former Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu has alleged that the Cyprus negotiations process failed due to the Greek Cypriot side's intransigent stance.

In statements following a visit paid to him yesterday by the "chairman of the equal rights and justice trade union" (HAK-SEN) Izzet Turkmen and his accompanying delegation, Eroglu claimed that the talks at Crans-Montana attended by the guarantor powers had failed to produce any results despite steps taken by his successor Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci due to the Greek Cypriot side's intransigence.

Eroglu argued that the next step that needed to be taken was to look for ways of getting rid of the "isolation", to act in unity and to show the world that the Turkish Cypriot "people" are happy of the existence of the "TRNC".

Eroglu also expressed his view that he did not agree with the understanding that the Turkish Cypriot "people" were desperately in need of a settlement. "We need to stand as one to the outside world whilst we seek ways of solving our domestic problems" he added.

Turkmen, for his part, said that the only positive aspect of the negotiations was the 11 February 2014 Joint Declaration signed between Eroglu and Cyprus President Anastasiades.

[08] Another attack against a vehicle with breakaway regime's registration numbers occurred in front of APOEL football club

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibrisli newspaper (25.08.17) reports that a taxi with breakaway regime's registration numbers which was carrying British tourists from Larnaka International Airport has suffered material damages as a result of an attack held by fanatic Greek Cypriots in front of APOEL football club's offices in Nicosia.

According to the paper, the vehicle belongs to Rifat Turgut, chairman of Turkish Cypriot taxi drivers' union, and was driven by Aziz Canas. The passengers have reportedly experienced difficult moments but no one was injured because the doors were locked. A complaint regarding the incident was filed to the police of the Republic at Agios Dometios barricade.

Referring to the same issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (25.08.17) reports that Turgut alleged that they went to the Agios Dometios Police Station to give a statement on this incident but they could not find a Turkish language interpreter. He said that they also informed the breakaway regime's police, which told them that they would do whatever was necessary. According to information obtained by Kibris, the "police" have not informed the Turkish Cypriot members of the bi-communal Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters about this incident.

[09] Cavusoglu and Tillerson discussed Iraq and Syria over phone call

According to Turkish daily Sabah newspaper (online, 25.08.17), Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed the latest situation in Iraq and Syria with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in a phone call on Thursday.

According to Foreign Ministry sources, Cavusoglu and Tillerson discussed the independence referendum that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) plans to hold September 25. The KRG has been repeatedly urged against holding the referendum by both Turkey and the U.S. as it would likely lead to instability in the region.

The two top diplomats also reportedly discussed the latest developments in Syria, particularly in the provinces of Idlib and Afrin. The sources said that Cavusoglu and Tillerson also touched upon the topic of Afghanistan.

[10] Bahceli: "KRG independence referendum may be a 'casus belli' for Turkey"

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (online, 24.08.17) reports that Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli said on Aug. 24 that the independence referendum of the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), due to be held on Sept. 25, should be deemed a "cause of war" for Turkey if necessary.

"We must disapprove of Barzani's referendum preparations, including in Turkmen towns, to the end. It should be known that this potential referendum is a rehearsal for Kurdistan. This referendum is completely against Turkmens and Turkey. It should be deemed a cause of war for Turkey if necessary," Bahceli said at a press briefing.

"A dark enmity is trying to create an illegitimate, de facto situation, which completely violates international law and our sovereign rights," he said and added: "We have to show our national power no matter what and defeat those who want to destroy our home and divide our land".

Responding to a question about work to form a new party by dissident former MHP members, Bahceli said it is "beneficial".

Former lawmaker Engin Ayd?n is the latest figure to resign from the MHP and announce his participation in the new movement, and Bahceli said his resignation was "unilateral choice".

On whether he anticipates new resignations from the party, Bahceli said "our door is open, those who want to come in can come in, those who want to leave can leave." TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION
