[01] British High Commissioner: "The sides that are involved directly on the issue of guarantees are ready to find new constructive methods on the issue

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (15.07.16) reports that the British High Commissioner to Lefkosia, Matthew Kidd gave a common interview to Havadis and Cyprus Weekly newspapers and made "impressive statements" as regards the guarantees.

Havadis which reports on the issue under the title: "New method on the guarantees", writes that Kidd stated that by the end of July the two leaders in Cyprus must agree on how to move forward one step the negotiation, that is how they will discuss the issue of territory and the issue of guarantees.

"If they are able to do that then it will become likely to reach a solution in 2016", he stated.

He went on adding that it is important to look into the future and see things that we use to take for granted but no longer exist. "You have to build on your strategy at the negotiations taking advantage of the positive conditions that exist today", he stated and added: "The sides that are involved directly on the issue of guarantees are ready to find new constructive methods on the issue. They are ready to find elements that could be safeguarded in a package that will provide security to both sides in Cyprus, not only to one side", he stated.

[03] Turkish Cypriot columnist: "Citizenship is Akinci's most important success"

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (15.07.16) publishes an article by the paper's editor ?in- chief Basarn Duzgun who writes that an important convergence was reached as regards the structure of the new state that will be established and notes that this is Akinci's biggest success at the negotiations:

"Do you know what this success is? Using simple words means that all the current citizens of the TRNC will be citizens of the new state that will be established. I am saying this as a person who knows very well about all the fights, the bargaining and the backstage crisis that took place during the Annan Plan regarding what would happen with the Turkish origin persons. The number of the Turkish origin persons that would be transferred to the new state was 50 thousands. And this number created a lot of discussion. The agreement reached now, and I am talking about an agreement because Anastasiades has accepted it as well, is a very good solution. But I have trouble understating why some circles reacted despite this", Dusgun writes.

The columnist goes on and writes that Mete Hatay, who is a researcher and writer at Polis magazine, gives a very good reply on these issues at his Facebook account. According to Hatay's post, after a decision taken by the "assembly", Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership decided between 1975-79 to transfer population from Turkey as workers in order to increase the number of the population from 116,000 to 200,000. In a four year period, 35,000 Turkish, mostly villagers who did not own any territory, were transferred to the island and 12,000 of them returned to Turkey because they were not able to adopt the new lifestyle. To those who remained at the island, Greek Cypriot territory and houses were given and were granted the "TRNC citizenship". They received title deeds after 1994. [?]

Hatay also writes that for the time being there are around 350,000 persons in the breakaway regime and 150,000 are Turkish Cypriots and 200,000 Turkish and foreigners. He also notes that the latter number includes 75,000 students, 40,000 foreign workers, 25,000 soldiers, 5,000 family members of military staff, tourists and other persons who were granted the "TRNC citizenship".

[04] Levent reveals a testimony about the missing persons in Cyprus

Invoking a conversation of a Turkish soldier which took place during the Turkish invasion in Cyprus in 1974, with his spouse, the columnist writes that the above mentioned Turkish man, whose name remained unknown, has said to his spouse that they had arrested eleven Greek Cypriot soldiers at the Buffavento castle and later on they had thrown them in the gap. In a meeting with the representatives of the Turkish Cypriot Teachers' Trade Union (KTOS) and the Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers' Union (KTOEOS), Talat said that they, as CTP, objected many years ago to the prohibition of headwear in the "universities" in the occupied area of Cyprus, adding that however, it can not be accepted to be religious pressure nowadays at the formal trainning. Talat noted that this situation is also contrary to the "national education law" and it is clear that the education will be on the secular line, adding that in this context the opening of the theology college in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus is also an anomaly.

The general secretary of KTOS Sener Elcil, for his part, reminding Turkey's government officials' statements during their visits in the occupied area of Cyprus who said "everything we have, you will also have", said that these statements are being implemented fast and the education is becoming Islamic.
