[A] TURKISH CYPRIOT / TURKISH PRESS

[01] Erdogan alleges that Cyprus could not become a member of the EU because of the division of the island caused by the Turkish occupation

Responding to questions of Kanal 24 television yesterday, Erdogan accused former French President Nikola Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel of dealing a blow to Turkey's accession course to the EU. He argued that his country exerts great efforts for joining the EU and is ready on all chapters.

Erdogan went on and alleged that the EU member states are not in line with the acquis communautaire in many aspects, the most important of which is Cyprus. He claimed, inter alia, the following: "You cannot accept south Cyprus as Cyprus, because there is a Green Line in the middle. South Cyprus has not any possession in northern Cyprus. Your stance against this is also important. We are exhibiting our stance. Why? Because this is the stance which this nation deserves. We cannot be defeated. However, our ministry regarding the EU is working very well now. It has established its entire institutional structure and is continuously going around all countries and explaining?"

[02] Ertug says that agreement has been reached with Downer on some issues

In statements after their two-hour meeting, Ertug said that they exchanged views on the work of the technical committees, the progress achieved and the planning for the future. He noted that agreement was reached on some issues. Ertug said that Downer was satisfied with the developments and the progress achieved until today and added that the meetings between Downer and the special representatives will recommence in September. He noted that the meetings of the technical committees will continue.

[03] Kucuk invites MEPs of Turkish origin to the occupied area of Cyprus

Kucuk said that he wanted to send through Ceyhun an invitation to MEPs of Turkish origin, whom he had met during his visit in Strasbourg, to visit the occupied area of Cyprus.

Ozan Ceyhun offered to Kucuk his new book under the title "Man wird nie Deutscher".

[04] South Korean businessmen will reportedly invest 3 billion dollars in the occupied area of Cyprus

Tatar argued that the occupied area of Cyprus will slowly-slowly become an attraction centre for investments and added that they hold meetings with foreign investors who want to come to the occupied area. He also recalled that many Turkish firms have made very important investments and will continue to invest in the occupied area of Cyprus.

Tatar noted that he would help the South Korean businessmen to meet with the "central bank" and the "Investment Development Agency" (YAGA) in order to explain their projects.

Kibris writes that the headquarters of the above-mentioned businessmen's company are in Seoul.

Turkish Cypriot Halkin Sesi newspaper (27.07.12) reports that the South Korean businessmen want to establish in the occupied area of Cyprus their second headquarters after Dubai.

[06] Self-styled minister of sports calls on Europe to remove the embargoes

Speaking during the visit, Durust expressed support to the protest campaign and vowed to contribute at every platform.

He alleged that the occupation regime "is a sovereign state which is ready to integrate with the international community". Durust also called on Europe "to remove the unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriots".

"The lifting of embargoes is a must in the name of humanity. I strongly believe that the TRNC state will be recognized by other states one day. What's the meaning of embargoes in today's world? I call on the international community to remove the embargoes imposed on us" he was quoted as saying.

Durust also criticized the Republic of Cyprus of working to prevent the Turkish Cypriots from enjoying their rights and alleged that he occupation regime continues to improve further day by day, and alleged that the Greek Cypriot Side remains behind the economy of the occupation regime despite its recognition and EU membership.

"Of course we don't want our neighbours to fail to stand on their feet. What we want is the Turkish Cypriots to have equal rights with Greek Cypriots in participating at international sports events" he added.

The Embargoed Human Rights Group has called on people to participate in the protest action that has been launched by Cyprus Turkish associations and civil society organizations based in London.

"Several protest actions are being held within the framework of the joint initiative which is protesting the International Olympic Committee for isolating the Cyprus Turkish sportsmen from the London 2012 games", Bayark broadcast.

[07] CTP argues that the Turkish Cypriots should participate in the Olympic Games under the Olympic flag until the Cyprus problem is solved

The CTP expressed its sorrow for the Turkish Cypriot "people" not being able to participate in the Games "because of the isolations imposed by the non-solution", and added that the contribution of the "TRNC athletes" in the ideals of olympism is inevitable. "In parallel to this being a right given by the spirit of olympism, it should be a right created by the yes vote of the Turkish Cypriots in the 2004 referendum", the statement claimed.

Meanwhile, Kibris reports also that the self-styled minister of public works and transport, Ersan Saner is in London and participated yesterday in a reception hosted by the Turkish Embassy to London in the honour of the Turkish Minister of Sports and the Turkish athletes, who will participate in the Olympic Games. The "representative" and the "councillor" of the regime in London, Oya Tuncali and Mustafa Beyazbayram also attended the reception.

[08] "The AKP and its men in Cyprus"

"As though everything is perfect, and the only remaining anomaly is the ruling National Unity Party (UBP) of northern Cyprus, Turkey has apparently started efforts to make sure that its man remains in power there for now.

Only few years ago, the same government in Ankara had some other people it considered its men in northern Cyprus, but the Turkish Cypriot people made it clear that the people in power in northern Cyprus should not be anyone else's men but their own. That was why first the Socialist Republican Turks' Party (CTP) coalition government with the Freedom and Democracy Party (ORP) ? a party established with Ankara's manipulation by four deputies who resigned from the other two centre-right parties ? was taken down in the elections, and later Mehmet Ali Talat was ousted from the presidency with an electoral defeat. Turkish Cypriots elected a centre-right government and a centre-right president, although Ankara very much wanted Talat and the CTP to remain in power.

Why did the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government want Talat and the CTP in and former President Rauf Denktas and the UBP (as well as the Democrat Party) out? It's simple: Talat, the CTP and the AKP believed that Denktas and the UBP were the reason a solution to the Cyprus problem could not be achieved over the past four decades, and that if they were put aside and a pro-settlement government were installed in northern Cyprus, a deal with the Greek Cypriots would become very easy to achieve.

The result? The AKP, Talat and some segments of the CTP (some still remain blinded by their ideology) realized that the Greek Cypriot side was never even interested in a settlement, and it was because of that that a resolution could not be achieved in the Cyprus talks that have been continuing since 1967.

Despite the AKP's desire to work with Talat and the socialists, Turkish Cypriots realized that they must first embrace their state and support those who are for the consolidation of the Turkish state. Why? Because of the Annan Plan fiasco that Ankara so staunchly supported and the gross failure of the EU, the United States and others who promised international integration to Turkish Cypriots should they accept the plan? Although the Turkish Cypriots did accept the UN plan, they have been left out in the cold. The Greek Cypriots, who rejected the plan, were rewarded with E.U. membership.

Now, the UBP government has been in power since 2010, and with Ankara's assistance has been trying to restructure the Turkish Cypriot state. The plan is a rather wild one, dictated by Turkey. Those who were the AKP's men yesterday are staunchly against the plan, thanks also to the arrogance of [Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip] Erdogan.

The AKP now wants the UBP convention to re-elect Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk as its leader, so that the program can continue to be implemented without interruption. Due to the domestic struggle for political dominance, President Dervis Eroglu, a former UBP leader, wants Health Minister Ahmet Kasif to become the UBP's chief and prime minister. Would Kasif do anything other than what the AKP tells him? As long as Ankara remains the sole financier of the Turkish Cypriot government, unfortunately not? Yet, Kasif is under pressure from Ankara to step out of the race.

The UBP convention is in December. As the saying goes: By then this rice will have taken up much more water."

[09] Ertugruloglu and Avci will reportedly return to the UBP

The paper writes that after the completion of this first stage, Turgay Avci and Mustafa Gokmen, chairman and "MP" of the Freedom and Reform Party (ORP) respectively, will also return to the UBP and become "ministers" in the "cabinet" to be established after the congress.

[10] Maronites from Ayia Marina want to return to their village

Eroglu stated that he cannot give an immediate reply to the Maronites request. He said that the village is currently a military zone and therefore a careful consideration must be made due to the location of the village.

He promised to give them an answer as soon as possible.

[11] Bank director disappears with seven million Turkish liras

Under the title "What kind of a transfer is this", the paper writes that Karimis was appointed to his post recently and he would transfer to the occupied area three million TL and 1.5 million Euros. The Turkish police are looking everywhere for Karimis, notes Kibris pointing out that the method of transferring money from Turkey to the occupied area of Cyprus in a suitcase has caused a shock in the northern occupied part of the island. Anatolia news agency reported that no news was heard of Karimis since the 24th of July around 13.15 o' clock.

Responding to questions of Kibris, the self-styled minister of finance, Ersin Tatar said that the incident is investigated together with the "central bank". He noted that the method of transferring money in a suitcase is not an acceptable one today and added that the bank's transfers will be controlled.

[12] Erdogan said that Turkey is taking all measures against a cooperation between PKK and Syrian Kurdish political party

Speaking to reporters at Ankara's Esenboga International Airport prior to his departure for the inauguration of the London Olympics, Erdogan stated:

"Our armed forces and all related units are working on the matter (of Syria)". He went on and stated: "It is out of question for us to tolerate a structure of the terrorist organization in north of Syria and permit the presence of a threat to Turkey there".

"Our Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will travel to north of Iraq next week and discuss the issue of northern Syria with north Iraqi officials. Davutoglu will convey our sensitivities in the region," Erdogan stated.

"An approach to establish a Syrian national Kurdish council would be a wrong one. We do not wish Syria's territorial integrity to be disturbed, a beginning of clashes based on sects and the beginning of clashes between ethnic groups. Northern Syria includes not only Kurdish brothers and sisters but also Turks and Arabs. They all together make up the northern Syria region," Erdogan noted.

"We will never be deceived by certain provocations. If there is a need for a step against the terrorist organization, we will certainly take that step," Erdogan said.

"And, we will never welcome imaginary maps in the region," Erdogan concluded.

[13] Turkish Prime Minister to meet his British counterpart in London

Erdogan will meet British Prime Minister David Cameron on July 27. He will also attend the inauguration ceremony of 2012 London Olympic Games as the guest of Cameron the same day.

The two Premiers will together watch the basketball game between women teams of Turkey and Angola.

Turkish Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin and Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz are accompanying Erdogan.

Erdogan will return to Turkey on July 28.

[14] "Turkey's defence purchases to reach $8 billion by 2016"

"Turkey will spend up to $8 billion in defence purchases as its exports will reach $2 billion in 2016, four years from now, according to a major estimation by the procurement agency, the Under secretariat for Defence Industries (SSM). The present figures are around half of that.

The expectations in the SSM's updated 2012-2016 strategic program are realistic given the money Turkey would pay for expensive systems ? such as the F-35s or the U-214 submarines from Germany ? over the next few years, as well as the rapid increase in its exports mainly to Islamic countries, according to one defence analyst.

Turkey is in talks with four key foreign suppliers on a $4 billion Long Range Air and Missile Defence Systems project.

The country's mainly exports armoured vehicles of many sorts, rockets and other ammunition, as well as military electronics like radios, to more than 10 Islamic countries. It also sells aviation equipment as part of offset deals. [?]"

[15] A new illegal university under the name "Mediterranean Karpass University" will start operating in occupied Cyprus

The new illegal university was established in 2010 and is currently building its campus in occupied Ayios Epiktitos village.

The new university, under the name "Mediterranean Karpass University", will start operating with 150-200 students and will take 750 students every year aiming to have five thousand students in five years. TURKISH AFFAIRS SECTION
