[01] Reactions to the reported prohibition applied to Turkish Cypriots to travel to third countries through Turkey with Cyprus passport

In a written statement issued yesterday, Mr Cakici noted that in the past those who were entering Turkey by showing identity card or a passport could travel to another country with a passport or an identity card of the Republic of Cyprus and noted that with the new practice, the Turkish Cypriots who do not possess passport of the TRNC are not allowed to exit Turkey.

Mr Cakici said that this application is giving pause to thinking in an environment where the occupied part of Cyprus has been turned into a free for all place where the application of entering with an identity card is valid. Mr Cakici pointed out that with this application the Turkish Cypriots are forced to take passport of the TRNC.

Mr Cakici stressed that the freedom of the Turkish Cypriots to travel is being limited and that they are forced to use the Larnaca International Airport.

Afrika publishes the report regarding the prohibition under the title Those who do not possess a TRNC passport cannot exit Turkey and notes that the snap under the statement of Talat who said that those who take passports of the Republic of Cyprus should be ashamed has propped up. The paper reports that another Turkish Cypriot family has been forced to come down from the ship in Istanbul, when the police told them that they could not exit Turkey with a passport of Republic of Cyprus.

Afrika reports also that the Turkish Cypriot Travel Agents Union (KITSAB) has issued a statement noting that those who enter Turkey with an identity card of the TRNC cannot travel to a third country and warned that they could enter Turkey with the TRNC, Turkish or Republic of Cyprus passports.

In the statement, the chairman of KITSAB, Ozbek Dedekorkut refers to the information that some Turkish Cypriots have not been allowed to travel to third countries through Turkey using passports of the Republic of Cyprus and notes that there is no decision regarding a new application by Turkey.

He said that those who will travel to third countries should enter Turkey with a passport of the TRNC or the Republic of Turkey and added that while they exit for third countries they can show as visa their Republic of Cyprus passport for which they can take visa while entering Turkey and exit the country with the same passport.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (17.07.08) reports that the self-styled prime minister, Ferdi Sabit Soyer said yesterday that an agreement signed between Turkey and the breakaway regime is giving the possibility for using identity cards during travelling between Turkey and the occupied areas of Cyprus, but there is no agreement regarding those who wish to exit Turkey for third countries.

In statements before the meeting of the council of ministers of the breakaway regime, Mr Soyer said the following when reminded the difficulties which some Turkish Cypriots have faced in Turkey: The practice of entering-exiting with identity card is valid in the journeys between the TRNC and Turkey. The exit from the Republic of Turkey for abroad is made with passport. Therefore, exit with the passport of the TRNC can be made. This is the practice and there is no change at the moment in this practice.

[02] Statements by Ozdil Nami on the Cyprus problem

In an interview with Ada TV television, Mr Nami said that the Greek Cypriot side, in front of some demands of the Turkish side, is reacting by saying that this was not so even in the Annan Plan.

Mr Nami said that they have agreed on more than ten subjects with the Presidential Commissioner, George Iacovou and noted that they will meet before 25 of July in order to compile the work carried out until today.

Mr Nami argued that we have come to the stage of the solution and added that the Turkish Cypriots should leave aside the political conflicts and join their forces. Criticism will be made, but the important thing is to be constructive. The opposition party in the south supports Christofias, he said.

When the journalist told him that the federation in Belgium is falling apart and asked whether the Czechoslovakian model could be an example for Cyprus, Mr Nami said: There is no government in Belgium but life continues. The economy is ok. The people are not influenced. I think that we should take lessons from Belgium on the point of how life could continue in a possible bad situation in the federal system to be established in Cyprus.

Mr Nami pointed out to the importance of the illegal visit of the Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan to the occupied areas of Cyprus in order to participate in the celebrations for the anniversary of the Turkish invasion of the island. He noted that if today the Ledra Street barricade is opened and the agreements of 21 March, 23 May and 1 July have been reached, all these happened by acting together with Turkey.

[05] Reference to Cyprus by Erdogan during his address to Turkish Ambassadors

Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday Turkey preserves all excitement and determination despite negative developments in Turkey's EU accession process.

Erdogan spoke to Turkish ambassadors over a consultation meeting in Ankara Palas Hotel on Wednesday.

According to AA, Mr Erdogan said: Cyprus is one of the priorities of Turkish foreign policy. We are determined to support a constructive approach for peace in the island. We will be in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) this coming weekend with a large delegation. We will attend inauguration of new facilities and join in the celebrations of the TRNC. We will continue to support the efforts made within the framework of the United Nations for a comprehensive solution in the island.

[06] A frigate and airplanes of the Turkish army will once more violate the territorial waters and the airspace of Cyprus

According to a statement issued yesterday by the Security Forces Command, the frigate Gelibolu of the Turkish Navy is expected to anchor tomorrow in the occupied port of Keryneia. The frigate will remain at the port for three days and it will be open for the public.

Furthermore, the Turkish Stars of the Acrobatic Fleet Command of the Turkish Air Force will also carry out an acrobatic show in the sky of the occupied area of Cyprus.

[07] Murat said that an example of the arbitrary distribution of the citizenship of the breakaway regime in the past is the citizenship of a person involved in Ergenekon case in Turkey

In a statement issued yesterday by his ministry, Mr Murat noted that in the past 2500 persons have been given the citizenship in one year or 1560 persons have been made citizens in one day.

Mr Murat argued that his government has made a reform in the immigration and registered the illegal workers. He said that 5134 persons were registered in 2003, 10174 in 2004, 30605 in 2005, 49574 in 2006 and 46625 in 2007.

Noting that the name of one person who was arbitrarily given the citizenship of the breakaway regime in 1993 is involved in the Ergenekon investigation, Mr Murat said, inter alia, the following:

...In a newspaper reference was made to the citizenship. It was said that this person was known as related with the Turkish Revenge Brigade (TIT) and the Ergenekon investigation. A member of the TIT was convicted to 19 years in prison by the Ankara State Security Court and remained 4.5 years in jail. In the investigation which was conducted it was revealed that this person was a TRNC citizen. Reference is made to this person together with General Sener Eruygur in the Ergenekon investigation. He is one of those committed the assassination of Akin Birdal, chairman of the Human Rights Association.

[08] Mr Zerihoun held contacts in the occupied areas of Cyprus

In a statement issued after the meeting by the chairman of the UBP, Tahsin Ertugruloglu, it is alleged that the Greek Cypriot leader is going around the world with the title of President of Cyprus and is undertaking initiatives which will influence the negotiating process and destroy the hopes for an agreement. He claimed that it is difficult to expect results based on equality from negotiations which are carried out in conditions of inequality.

[10] Pertev said that an area in occupied Limnitis will be given away to a private company

Mr Pertev noted that it is time to put an end to the plundering of the most virgin and beautiful places of northern Cyprus.

According to a statement issued by the HP, Mr Pertev has examined recently the area with the so-called head of occupied Limnitis village, Goksel Kabaran. The wild sheep of Cyprus named mouflon, foxes and rabbits live in the above-mentioned 176-donum area. Furthermore, the caretta-caretta turtles lay their eggs in the beach of that area.

Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (17.07.08) reports that the council of ministers of the breakaway regime has finally postponed the permits for extracting gypsum plaster from Ipsaro Hill. The paper reminds that the extraction of gypsum plaster in that area has caused the reaction of the environmental organizations and the people.

[11] Soyer said they are discussing the reshuffle of the government; Uzun said they are facing difficulties in paying the salaries of the employees

Mr Soyer noted that he did not want to discuss names regarding this issue before establishing the ways which will contribute to the economic, social and cultural development and overcome the problems.

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (17.07.08) reports that the self-styled minister of finance, Ahmet Uzun told the paper that they are creating miracles every month in order to be able to pay the wages of the employees. He noted that they will also find a formula for paying the 40-50 trillion Turkish liras needed for the wages of July.

Mr Uzun said that the bad structure in the occupied areas exists since 1974 and added:

I am telling you, as a person who is carrying out the duty of the minister of finance for five years, that since 1974 we proceed by somehow solving every month the problem in the salaries. You could write three volumes of books to explain it. I believe that we will somehow find a formula for it this month as well and we will pay. But then what will happen, what about afterwards? What about our children? Who will guarantee this?

Finally, Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (17.07.08) reports that the self-styled government of the breakaway regime has decided to charge the media for the services offered by the illegal TAK news agency, which until today were free of charge. According to the decision, the annual fee of 30.000 new Turkish liras (YTL) will be valid as of 1 July 2008. The monthly fee will be 2.490 YTL. The paper reports that this decision hoisted the flag of the bankruptcy of the economy of the breakaway regime.

[15] Senior US official holds contacts in Ankara

U.S. President George W. Bush's assistant for national security affairs will arrive in Ankara Thursday for one-day meetings with Turkish officials, according to a U.S. spokesperson.

Stephen Hadley will hold talks with the president, prime minister, foreign minister and military officials during the visit that comes as part of his regular consultations on a number of issues of regional interest, spokesperson Kathy Schallow added.

Turkish-U.S. relations, cooperation in the fight against terrorism, Iran's disputed nuclear program and the latest developments in the Middle East are expected to appear on the agenda of the talks.

Hadley will be the second high-level U.S. official to visit Turkey this month, after a key trip to Ankara by the United States' second highest-ranking military official Gen. James Cartwright.

[16] Iranian Foreign Minister to visit Ankara

Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki will pay a one-day visit to Ankara on Friday.

Turkish Foreign Ministry stated that Motaki would visit Ankara as the guest of Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan.

The two ministers will discuss bilateral relations as well as other recent developments.

Motaki will also be received by Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
