    [01] Moller met with Talat

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (05.03.08) reports that the UN Secretary-Generals special representative in Cyprus, Mr. Michael Moller, after meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday declared that there was no preconditions as regards the opening of the Ledra street crossing. Speaking to reports after meeting with Mr. Talat, the UN Secretary-Generals special representative in Cyprus Mr. Michael Moller said that no specific date has been fixed as regards the meeting of the leaders of the two communities. He said that most probably the meeting will take place before the end of this month. He expressed the hope that the date will be fixed during President Christofias meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Talat.

When asked to comment on the opening of the Ledra street crossing and whether there is a precondition set by the Greek Cypriot side to this end, Mr. Moller said: Opening of Limnitis crossing is not a precondition but a wish.

As for the visit of the UN delegation to Cyprus Mr. Moller said that a date was not fixed yet and that the delegation might visit the island after the meeting between President Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Talat. He said that the visit will most probably take place towards the end of March or the beginning of April.

[02] Ercakica on the Talat-Moller meeting

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (05.03.08) reports that the self-styled presidential spokesman Hasan Ercakica said that the meeting between President Christofias and Mr. Talat will take place in March. He went on and said that the UN evaluation team will be arriving in the island during the first half of April. Referring to the UN Secretary-Generals special representative in Cyprus, Mr. Michael Mollers meeting with Mr. Talat yesterday, Mr. Ercakica said that during the meeting issues concerning the negotiation process were discussed.

When asked to comment on the opening of the Ledra street crossing Mr. Ercakica said that the Turkish side is ready in every way for the opening of the Ledra street crossing. He expressed great satisfaction that for the opening of the Ledra street crossing the Greek Cypriot side does not set preconditions.

When asked to comment on the recent statement by President Christofias that If Turkey is ready, we are ready as well, Mr. Ercakica said: He is trying to say that Turkey precludes a solution in Cyprus. This is a very wrong stance. If you make a wrong diagnosis of the problem then it will be difficult to secure a solution. We consider this statement totally aimed at domestic consumption, since he gives the impression that he is willing to meet Mr. Talat.

When asked to comment on Mr. Talats visit to Ankara tomorrow Mr. Ercakica said that Mr. Talat will leave for Ankara at the head of a delegation, where the self-styled foreign minister Turgay Avci will also be included. Mr. Ercakica went on and added that after Ankara, Mr. Talat will leave for Dakar, Senegal to take part at the summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
