[01] Statements by Ali Babacan and Olli Rehn in Brussels

Mr Rehn noted that Turkey should fulfil its commitments deriving from the Supplementary Protocol. He said that at the meeting they discussed issues regarding the reforms in Turkey and its role for the peace and stability in the region. He referred to the need for achieving progress in Turkeys accession negotiations and argued that in December at least two chapters which are ready from the technical point of view should be opened in a manner which is appropriate to the Negotiations Framework Document.

Mr Babacan stated that they discussed the Cyprus problem during the meeting and added: I conveyed to our EU friends our expectation for supporting the UN process. I explained that concessions could not be seized from Turkey by using its EU process. I was pleased to see that the EU stated that this problem could be solved only in the UN process.

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (21.11.07) reports that Mr Babacan made exclusive statements to Turkish journalists. Replying to a question, he said that a difference of opinion exists between Turkey and the EU both on the Cyprus problem and on the issue of the regional administration of northern Iraq.

[02] Protests against the government in the occupied areas of Cyprus

The drivers argue that in this manner going in and coming out from the terminal will become more difficult. The paper reports that in some places traffic congestion was caused in the occupied part of Nicosia. In other places the roads were empty.

The chairman of Tip-Is, Dr. Erol Seherlioglu said that they demand from the government to send to the assembly a draft-law agreed with his trade union. The chairman of the Chamber of Industry, Salih Tunar said that they want to produce and invest more in the country and at the same time to create more places of employment for the people.

[03] The majority of the political parties in the occupied areas of Cyprus support the presidential system

The chairman of the CTP, Ferdi Sabit Soyer drew attention to the difficulties which will be caused in the process of a possible solution of the Cyprus problem because of the fact that different systems are implemented in the northern and southern part of the island. The chairman of the UBP, Tahsin Ertugruloglu said that they have not discussed the issue of the political regime in their party. He added, however, that his personal view is that the parliamentary system is not very appropriate for the occupied areas of Cyprus and expressed his support to the presidential system. Furthermore, the chairman of the DP, Serdar Denktas said that they should definitely pass to the presidential system.

[04] Ertugruloglu calls on Soyer to resign

In a written statement he issued yesterday, Mr Ertugruloglu argued that not only citizens but even persons who founded the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and former ministers began to talk about the bribery, the abuse of authority and the illegal practices of the CTP government.

During the cocktail he had the opportunity to meet with an MP of Australias Labour Party. Mr Caglar visited also Turkish and Turkish Cypriot schools.

[06] The issue of granting the citizenship of the breakaway regime in an irregular manner is still on the agenda; The military and civilian administrations of Turkey are accused

The YKP noted that the issue of how and by whom the thousands of citizenships given in the past contrary to the international law could be annulled should be discussed.

The general secretary of the administrative committee of the YKP, Murat Kanatli criticized Turkeys military and civilian administrations and pointed out that the demographic structure in the occupied part of Cyprus has been changed. He also noted that those who at the time took the issue of the citizenship to court, now are sounding the ground for giving back the citizenship to those persons, the citizenship of whose has been annulled by the court. Mr Kanatli said: Absolutely no country accepts the import of a population which is five times more than its own population. Definitely no community accepts the usurpation of its will by becoming a minority in its own country.

Under the title All the illegal citizenships must be annulled, Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (21.11.07) refers to the same issue and publishes the opinions of ordinary people whom the paper asked in the streets.

A person named Cemal Kaioglu said that the citizenship was granted to persons who have not even visited the occupied areas of Cyprus and added that no houses existed in the addresses at which some of them stated that they lived. Another person named Adem Karabiber said that he lives for 16 years in the occupied part of Cyprus, but he has not been granted the citizenship yet. He argued that all the citizenships granted in an illegal manner should be annulled.
