[01] Statements by Talat on his contacts in New York upon his arrival in occupied Cyprus

Illegal Bayrak television (18.10.07) broadcast the following:

President Mehmet Ali Talat has arrived in the Republic after completing his contacts in New York. The President met with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Tuesday during which he asked him to launch a new initiative on the Cyprus issue.

Speaking on his arrival at Ercan (occupied Tymbou) Airport, President Mehmet Ali Talat stated that during his meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, the UN chief expressed his wish for finding a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.

However he added that Mr Ban Ki-Moon repeated himself by saying that the UN will only take a new initiative on the island in case of a real commitment by both sides.

Stressing that he expressed Turkish Cypriots readiness for launching full-fledged negotiations for the solution, Mr. Talat said that the address of Mr. Ban Ki-Moons words was obvious.

The President said he had a very fruitful meeting with the UN Chief adding that Mr Ban Ki-Moon had confirmed that the proposals being made by the Turkish Cypriot side on the 5th of September meeting was not against the essence of the 8th July agreement.

Accusing the Greek Cypriot side of trying to manipulate his meeting with Mr Ban Ki-moon, he said that by presenting proposals and sending a letter to the UN Secretary-General, the Greek Cypriot side is trying to give an impression that it is the party which is presenting constructive proposals for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The President reminded that he handed over a package of proposals putting forward confidence-building measures as well as military arrangements aimed at improving relations between the two sides and opening new crossing points, but he abstained from giving details of the content of the package he presented.

I did not receive any response from the UN Secretary-General. Mr Ban Ki-Moon said that he will evaluate the issue. I think it will be useful to give reasonable time for him, he concluded.

[02] The British High Commissioner in Cyprus on the Cyprus problem

Ankara Anatolia news agency (18.10.2007) reports the following from occupied Lefkosia:

Peter Millett, the British High Commissioner in Greek Cypriot administration, said Thursday the High Commissioner's office has always supported Turkish Cypriots.

"We, as a guarantor state and EU member, work for reunification of the island," Millett told a meeting at the High Commissioner's office in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

According to Millett, there can be an opportunity to find a genuine settlement in the island after February's election in the Greek Cypriot administration. Millett said Britain will continue to work with the UN for a settlement in Cyprus. "We want dialogue, negotiation and agreement," he told.

The British High Commissioner called on the two sides to work for a solution and said he hoped a solution would be found to Cyprus issue in the possible shortest time.

Millett further said the EU thinks trade relations will help a settlement in Cyprus and supported efforts to strengthen Turkish Cypriot economy. Millett also said a settlement and agreement in the island should be based on political equality of both parties.

Atlar said that he told Mr Pancio, who was giving emphasis to the differences between (Turkish) Cypriots and Turkish (settlers), that there is no difference between them. The Turks wherever they live they are Turks and the Turkish Cypriot people are one integral entity, he said.

Mr Atlar also said that Mr Pancio was asking insistently about the number of the members of the Association. Mr Atlar told Mr Pancio that the Culture and Solidarity Association is one of the biggest non-governmental organizations in occupied Cyprus. He also told him that regarding the Cyprus problem they support the active and de facto guarantee of Turkey for a just and lasting solution. He also said that the Turkish Cypriot people was deceived at the referendum and the promises made to them were not kept.

Pancio also wanted to know how the Association evaluates all the political parties in occupied Cyprus with the Politics for the People Movement (HIS). Mr Pancio made some evaluations himself as well.

Mr Atlar told Mr Pancio the Turkish Armed Forces and Security Forces Commandership is a safeguard for the Turkish Cypriot people to live in safety and peace.
