[01] Mehmet Ali Talat to meet with the UN Secretary-General on 16 October

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (10.10.07) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat will present proposals and put forward demands when he meets with the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 16 October in New York.

Speaking to reporters during his regular weekly press conference the so-called presidential spokesman in the Turkish occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus Hasan Ercakica, referring to Talats forthcoming visit to New York said that Mr. Talat will make proposals and put forward demands. He will also demand from the UN Secretary-General to be more active in the Cyprus problem. Mr. Ercakica went on and said that the Turkish Cypriot leader will make proposals to the UN chief which envisages improvement of the relations between the two communities.

Mr. Ercakica went on and said that the meeting with the UN Secretary-General will be within the framework of the Turkish Cypriot Communitys political stance.

According to Mr. Ercakica, Mr. Talat will be meeting with the US Under-Secretary for Political Affairs Nicolas Burns.

Mr. Ercakica also answered questions put to him by journalists. To a question whether Mr. Ban Ki-moon meeting first with President Papadopoulos was a disadvantage to the Turkish side, Mr. Ercakica alleged that Ban Ki-moon- Papadopoulos meeting was very ineffective and short. We would have preferred it to have been an effective meeting, so that in its turn the Talat- Ban Ki-moon meeting would be rendered more effective, Mr. Ercakica claimed.

Referring to President Papadopoulos speech at the UN General Assembly, Mr. Ercakica further alleged that with his speech Mr. Papadopoulos tries to render negotiations impossible and then through osmosis to assimilate the Turkish Cypriots within the Greek Cypriot community. He alleged that Mr. Papadopoulos never refers to a comprehensive solution. His sole aim is to present the Cyprus problem as an occupation problem and secure the withdrawal of the Turkish Army and then through osmosis to assimilate the Turkish Cypriot community in Cyprus.

On the same issue, Ankara Anatolia news agency (09.10.07) reports from occupied Lefkosia the following:

Ercakica said that Turkish authorities confirmed the support they give, as well as the importance they attach to TRNC with the recent visits of Turkish President Abdullah Gul, Turkish parliament speaker Koksal Toptan and Foreign Minister and Chief Negotiator for EU talks Ali Babacan to the TRNC --as the dignitaries paid their first official visits to this country after they took over their new posts.

"As the 3 top-level officials of Turkey clearly expressed, Turkey and the TRNC are determined to stick firmly to the vision of reaching a solution on Cyprus issue within the shortest possible time," he noted.
