[01] Milliyet: Greek Cypriot ships in our ports. The embargo was broken

Under the title: Greek Cypriot ships in our ports in its front page and The embargo was broken in an extensive reportage in page 11, Milliyet newspaper (09.08.07) reports that in continuation of the crisis between the EU and Turkey on the issue of Turkeys refused to open its ports to the Greek Cypriot vessels, it became definite that Greek Cypriot ships have started transporting goods to the Turkish ports. As the paper notes, the incident which escaped notice by the ports authorities, was revealed after information given by a citizen under the name Oktay Selek to the district attorney of Kocaeli.

The Committee of Customs Inspection has appointed an inspector to investigate the information after the district attorney of Kocaeli, Ali Coban, has sent a letter informing the Committee about Greek Cypriot ships approaching Turkish ports.

According to the letter, the name of one of the ships involved is STROFADES III and it belongs to Siamo Co. Shipping Ltd in the free territories of the Republic of Cyprus.

Moreover, it was made known that the ship under the name MONA S, which was also entering and exiting Turkish ports transferring cargo, is registered on Samin HA company which is established in Syria, but it operates on behalf of Siamo Co. Shipping Ltd in South Cyprus.

Also, the ship WARNOW WHALE which belongs to the Southern Cypriot Mevla Shipping Co. Ltd is one of the ships the name of which is included on the list of the ships entering and exiting the Turkish ports most.

After the ships´ entry and exit and ship registration documents were investigated by the Customs Undersecretariat because of insistent information, it was ascertained that these ships used the ports of Gebze, Derince, Mersin and Gemlik many times under the flag of other countries.

    Subtitle: Under secretariat warned

The Customs Department Undersecretary, Bulent Ertem, stated that the issue concerns the Merchant Shipping Under secretariat and he talked about it to the General Directorate of Shipping and Aviation of the Foreign Ministry. Mr Ertem stated that even if they carry the flag of another country, ships registered, and their registration port, in the Greek Cypriot Sector then they should not be allowed to enter Turkish ports. Ertem went on and said that regarding this implementation, which is tantamount to breaking of the embargo imposed on the Greek Cypriot side, they have informed the head authorities of the ports.

Subtitle: Greek Cypriot ships entering ports:

STROFADES III has entered and exited Derince port on 16 June 2007, having as a place of arrival Mersin.

MONA S has entered under the flag of Syria the port of Diliskelesi on 20 June 2007, on June 25th the port of Diliskelesi from the port of Tartous, and on 25 September 2006 the port of Eregli.

WARNOW WHALE has entered under the flag of Antigua and Barbuda (ATG) the port of Gebze on 19 July 2007, on 3 July 2007 the port of Ambarli, on 27 July 2007 the port of Gemlik and on August 1st, 2007 docked at the Gebze port.

[02] Mr Avci wants no EU involvement in the issue of the occupied city of Varosha

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (09.08.07) reports that the self-styled foreign minister in the Turkish occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus, Turgay Avci has declared that They will never allow Varosha issue to be taken up by the EU.

Turgay Avci said: The Varosha issue is an issue to be taken up within the framework of a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem and it cannot be related to the acceptance of the direct trade regulations, which is a step towards removing of the unfair embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriots. He went on and said: We will definitely not allow an issue like Varosha which is part of a comprehensive solution to be transferred to the EU ground.

Avci, referring to a speech made by the Foreign Minister Erato Markoullis, accused the Foreign Minister of being the bugler of President Papadopoulos in the forthcoming presidential elections and of turning the Foreign Ministry into election headquarters. He said that Markoulliss speech reflects the continuation of the National Council decision that the settling of the Cyprus problem should be on the basis of a unitary state. He said that Markoulliss statement that Varosha should be returned to its legitimate owners should be considered within the framework of her nationalistic and fascist statements. He concluded by claiming that the hostile statements made by Markoullis will serve nothing but creating tension between the two peoples.
