[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkeys National Security Council decides upon the deployment of troops in LebanonTurkish daily MILLIYET newspaper (22.08.06) reports that the Turkish National Security Council met yesterday under the chairmanship of the Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. According to the paper, the main issues on the agenda were sending troops to Lebanon and the PKK.During the meeting the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, briefed the Council on his contacts in Lebanon, Israel and Palestine. He said that these countries have expressed their wish to see Turkish troops taking part in the UN Peace Force. Mr. Gul is to leave Ankara for Syria today for contacts with the Syrian government officials. Yesterdays meeting was the last meeting for the outgoing Turkish Chief of the General Staff General Hilmi Ozkok who will be retiring on 30th August at the end of his tenure. During the meeting the PKK issue, and developments related to it were evaluated. Within this framework the Council took up the increased activities of the PKK and the measures taken by the USA and the Iraqi government were examined. The meeting stressed that it was expected that both the USA and the Iraqi government should take more concrete and effective steps towards the PKK. (MHY) [02] A yacht marine is being built in the occupied village of YiallousaUnder the above title, Turkish Cypriot daily YEN0DÜZEN newspaper (22.08.06) reports that the investments in the construction sector in the occupied area of Karpass peninsula are increasing constantly. After the investments in the field of tourism made in the occupied area of Vokolida village, a new tourism complex is being built in Yiallousa village on a plot of land of 450 donums (a land measure of about 1000 square meters) under the name of Karpaz Bay Resort. The first investment of the above-mentioned resort, which is made by Israelis and Britons, began with the building of a marina. The marina is expected to be completed within two years.According to the paper, the yacht marine will have the ability to serve at the same time 320 yachts and in urgent situations it can also be used by trade ships. [03] The remains of ten persons were found during the excavations at Alamino villageTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (22.08.06) reports that until now the remains belonging to ten persons have been found during the excavations at Alamino village. The deputy of the Turkish Cypriot member in the Committee on the Missing Persons, Mr Ahmet Erdengiz said that those who were found in the mass grave at Alamino village may be the 14 missing Turkish Cypriots known as The Alamino Martyrs. The possibility that the remains belong to the Alamino martyrs is very high, but it should not be forgotten that in order to find out this, tests must be conducted first at the DNA laboratory, he pointed out and added that he cannot be one hundred percent sure before the DNA results are known. Meanwhile, it has been noted that a group of archeologists and anthropologists from Argentina will be coming to the island within the next few days in order to conduct excavations both in the occupied and the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.(I/Ts) [04] The Turkish Cypriot Building Contractors complained because they cannot participate in tenders in the framework of the EUs Financial Aid RegulationTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (22.08.06) reports that the Union of the Turkish Cypriot Building Contractors has issued a statement noting that they will not accept the fact that Turkish Cypriot contractors are not given a chance to participate in the tenders for the investments to be made in the occupied areas of Cyprus within the framework of the EUs Financial Aid Regulation for the Turkish Cypriots and the fact that the laws of the pseudo-state regarding the investments will be ignored and international tenders will be made.[05] Gazioglu: If the Greek Cypriots do not want the unification, we will be united with the world in another mannerTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (22.08.06) reports that Mr Tamer Gazioglu, self-styled ambassador of the TRNC (breakaway regime set up by Turkey in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus) to Ankara, has argued that some circles try to prevent the contacts of the Turkish Cypriots with their brother countries.Speaking at the First International Conference of Issik Lake on Cyprus, which took place in Kyrgyzstan, Mr Gazioglu alleged that under the leadership of Mr Rauf Denktas the Turkish Cypriots have always been struggling for a unified Cyprus and added: If the Greek Cypriots do not want to be united with us, we will build our future in another direction and be united with the world in another manner. Addressing the conference, the chairman of the Kyrgyz Parliaments Friendship Group with TRNC, Mr Sadir Japarov expressed the hope that other countries will establish with the breakaway regime similar relations to those that his country has built. Furthermore, the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Kyrgyz Parliament, Mr Bakit Bakatayev noted that the Kyrgyz Parliament will do whatever it can so that the TRNC people to take its place among the peoples of the world. [06] Protests continue in the occupied areas of CyprusTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (22.08.06) reports that the Turkish Cypriot Primary School Teachers and Public Servants Trade Unions, KTOS and KTAMS respectively, organized yesterday a protest activity against the Religion Workers Trade Union, the Religion Workers Union and the Ministry of Education in front of the Ministry where they placed a black wreath. The protesters said that they did not deserve the black wreath which had been placed in front of their headquarters because they opposed the Koran lessons taught in the mosques and in the houses. They held placards writing slogans such as Secularism is a characteristic of the Turkish Cypriots and The schools are the place of the education.Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily AFR0KA newspaper (22.08.06) writes that the trade unions which are members of the This Country is Ours platform, the majority of which supports the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), will organize today a protest against the increase of the prices. The protest is expected to begin in front of the Prime Ministers office. Among the demands of the protesters will also be the increase of the buying power of the workers. The chairman of Dev-Is, Mehmet Seyis said that in September the government must increase the salary of the public workers in a manner that will be reflecting the increase of the prices. Turkish Cypriot daily ORTAM newspaper (22.08.06) writes that the Communal Liberation Party (TKP) expressed its support to the above-mentioned protest of the Platform. (I/Ts.) [07] Turkey still suffering from the deadly Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic FeverTurkish Daily News newspaper (21.08.06) reports that a twenty-year-old Ufuk Demirci, bitten by a tick three weeks ago, died on Sunday from Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) at the Eskisehir Osmangazi University's Faculty of Medicine Hospital.Turkey is battling the largest-ever recorded outbreak of CCHF, which has killed 24 people this year, with experts saying that more cases of the Ebola-like disease are inevitable in the coming months. Most of the cases have occurred in six provinces in the Black Sea and Central Anatolia regions: Tokat, Sivas, Gumushane, Amasya, Yozgat and Corum. CCHF emerges particularly in the summer months and is spread to humans via the bite of an infected tick.
