[01] Soyer stated that the violence in the Middle should be a lesson also for Cyprus

He said that the events in Lebanon should be a lesson to the Greek and Turkish Cypriots in demonstrating the importance of the peace process. He added that reaching a solution under the EU umbrella will be a good example to the whole Middle East.

Pointing out to the increase in the bloodshed as a result of the ongoing operations by the Israeli forces, Mr Soyer said that the method of solving the problems should not be terror and violence.

Drawing attention to the fact that the recent events in the Middle East has shown clearly to everyone; and especially to the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots the importance of peace, Mr Soyer said that if the Turkish Cypriots as a secular Islamic society and the Christian Greek Cypriot society agree to come together in a common federal country under the roof of the EU, this would constitute a good model for the whole Middle East.

Expressing the belief that the continuing violence in the Middle East was the result of non-solution of the deep rooted disagreements, Mr Soyer said the violence should be a lesson also for Cyprus. Mr Soyer said that the dimension violence has reached in Lebanon and Palestine, once again proved how necessary it is to find a solution to the Cyprus issue.

In addition KIBRIS also reports that peace activists and the NOGs held a protest march yesterday during which they strongly protested Israels attacks in the Lebanon. The paper reports that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot as well as Arab protesters all together marched to the Israeli embassy in Lefkosia and read a press release condemning Israel for its ruthless bombings of the civilian people in Lebanon and in Gaza Strip The press release was read in Arabic, Turkish and Greek.

[02] Talat briefed the leaders of the Turkish Cypriot political parties

The meeting was attended by the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) self-styled Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, the partys General Secretary Omer Kalyoncu, the leader of the Democrat Party (DP) self-styled Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas, the leader of the main opposition National Unity Party (UBP) Huseyin Ozgurgun, the partys General Secretary Turgay Avci, and the Peace and Democracy Movements (BDH) General Secretary Mehmet Cakici. No statement was issued after the meeting.

[04] The member of the Missing Persons Committee Plumer Kucuk announced that exhumation work will start next month by experts of an Argentine organisation

The work - being carried out by the Missing Persons Committee in Cyprus - is to enter a new phase next month. According to information provided by the Turkish Cypriot member of the autonomous Committee - Gulden Plumer Kucuk, 5 experts from an Argentine organization will start exhumation work next month as part of a two-month program.

Mrs Kucuk is quoted by the TAK news agency as having said that the exhumations will be carried out both in north and south Cyprus to find the remains of around 200 Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot missing persons.

Explaining that the budget for the two-month long exhumation program has already been allocated, she said that more exhumations will be carried out once new funds are prepared.

Noting that the remains to be found will be tested at the new Anthropological Laboratory, she said that the equipment of the laboratory is to be completed soon with 90-thousand dollars worth of aid from Turkey.

Mrs Kucuk said 2 Turkish Cypriots, 2 Greek Cypriots and a foreigner will be employed in the Laboratory, from where, the remains will be taken to the DNA Institution in South Cyprus where 2 Turkish Cypriot and 2 Greek Cypriot experts will be employed.

[06] The European Greens Group supports the Turkish Cypriots´ parliamentarian representation to the EP

According to the AB Haber, Ms Frassoni went on and said that the warnings made by the Greens in the past that Cyprus should not be made an EU member before settling the Cyprus problem, have now proved to be true and that Cyprus is a problem before the European Union.

As the paper writes, Monica Frassoni also stated that there is a big possibility that the Greens´ planned December-visit to the occupied areas of Cyprus for meetings, to be postponed to January 2007.

[07] Ozdil Nami calls for European parliament representation of the occupation regime

Mr Nami has attended the deliberations of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europes. In an interview with the AB-Haber news agency, Mr Nami called on the European Parliament to show the necessary political will to make it possible for the Turkish Cypriots to be represented there.

Mr Nami said that he has been attending the meetings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as an elected representative of the Turkish Cypriots and alleged that the Council of Europe had found a formula to by-pass the Greek Cypriot objections to this arrangement.

He said the European Parliament should follow suit to make it possible for the Turkish Cypriots to be represented there as well. The EU is well aware of the fact that there is a working democracy in the TRNC, with democratically elected deputies and parliament. Therefore, we have the right to expect the European Parliament to grant us the rights the Council of Europe has granted he said.

[08] TRT Radio will be broadcasting from occupied Cyprus for the celebrations of the Turkish invasion

of July on the occasion of the celebrations of the Turkish invasion to Cyprus.

The Turkish Radio, which is broadcasting from the illegal BAYRAK studios, a programme with the name Merhaba Dunya (Hello World), will broadcast to Turkey and the world news regarding the current political and economic situation of occupied Cyprus.

The broadcasting has started yesterday with an interview of the self-styled president of the occupation regime Mr Mehmet Ali Talat who stated inter alia that they want a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem and the lifting of the isolation is an intermediary target.

[09] Turkeys Council of Ministers held yesterday a meeting on terror

According to him, all global individuals and groups must understand Turkey's resolve to eradicate terrorist organization at all costs. "We will take the appropriate steps decisively and with firmness", stressed Cicek.

Spokesman Cicek indicated that the fight against terror is the number one item on the government's agenda. "We expect support, sincerity and cooperation from all governments which acknowledged that PKK is a terrorist organization. The fight against terror is justified by international laws," added Cemil Cicek.

Cemil Cicek told that, as long as instability and unrest prevail in the Middle East, this will help terrorist organizations. "The Israeli-Palestinian problem has reached a dramatic point," Cicek also commented.

Moreover, Turkish daily MILLIYET newspaper (18/07/06) reports that Iraqi and the USA ambassadors to Turkey Sabah Umran and Ross Wilson were summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry about the PKK. The two ambassadors had separate meetings with the Turkish Foreign Ministry undersecretary Ambassador Ali Tuygan. The paper report that during the meeting with Ambassador Wilson the Turkish official referred to Israels actions in Lebanon and told the ambassador that the Turkish public opinion is on the verge of losing its patience regarding the tolerance shown to Israel and not letting Turkey to launch a cross border operation against the PKK. Ambassador Wilson was told that Turkish public opinion considers this stance as a double standard which fans the flames of anti-American feelings in Turkey. The US ambassador was told that no more talks is necessary that, time has come to take steps and Turkey is firm to take the necessary, steps within the international law and that Turkey prefers to do this with its allies. However, if this is not possible then Turkey will go alone and take its own steps.

Ambassador Wilsons reply to Turkish Foreign Ministry request came when the Ambassador paid a visit to the chairman of the Turkish Chambers of Commerce and Stock Exchanges Union, Rifat Hisarciklioglu in Ankara. Ambassador Wilson said: We do believe that Israel has the right to self- defence. Turkey should not launch unilateral cross border operations.

[10] Gul: Whatever necessary will certainly to be done in fight against terrorism

Gul is scheduled to meet British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw (Tr. Note: current British Foreign is Minister Margaret Beckett) and members of Turkish and TRNC friendship groups in the British Parliament. Gul will proceed to Oxford on July 19th and participate in meeting of Oxford University Islam Researches Institute Board of Trustees.

[11] The Turkish President endorses counterterrorism Law to appeal 'Certain' Articles

The new law widens the scope of crimes that could be considered as 'act of terror'. Here are the crimes that will be considered such as : "Human trafficking, voluntary manslaughter, intentional wounding, torture, sexual harassment, abuse of individual rights, prevention of teaching and learning, violation of the right to work, prevention of union rights, theft, looting, spreading radiation, causing blast with atomic energy, storage of dangerous materials, poisoning water and foods, production and marketing of illicit drugs, forgery of money, praise of terrorist acts, hijacking of vehicles, disturbing computer networks, efforts to cause negative sentiments on the Turkish Armed Forces."

Journalists who publish or make public terrorist organizations' declarations and/or point individuals as target will get jail sentence for their actions and media organs will be sentenced to fines.

All parties trying to harm the unitary system of Turkish government will face a penalty as described in Turkish Penal Code no. 314.

Individuals involved in the propaganda of terrorist organizations will be punished by jail sentence up to five years.

Individuals covering their faces during demonstrations to support the terrorist organizations will get prison term of up to five years.

Those involved in collecting illegally money for terrorist organizations will be treated as terrorists.

The Turkish government will protect all informants by providing new ID cards, driver's licenses, diplomas and other relevant documents.

The new law permits the use of force by security teams in cases when an individual or his car does not stop for a search.
