[01] UNFICYP Commander observed the Search and Rescue Naval exercise in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus

On its front page, Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (15/06/06), under the title Praise from the UN for the Turkish exercise, reported that the Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus Major General Rafael Jose Barni observed the Martyr Lieutenant Caner Gonyeli-2006 Search and Rescue Naval Exercises (S.A.R.), which were conducted yesterday morning north of the occupied village of Agios Amvrosios to the east of Kyrenia.

The UNFICYP Commander said afterwards that the exercises were well organized, professional and very successful. The paper also publishes a photo with the UNFICYP Commander next to the Turkish Navys Southern Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Alev Gumusoglu.

Vice-Admiral Alev Gumusoglu said that these exercises again proved the fact that the TRNC (breakaway regime in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus) and Turkey have the ability to conduct operations like these in the region.

Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, who also observed the S.A.R. exercises, told reporters afterwards that the event was proof of the fact that the Turkish Cypriots and the TRNC had full authority over the territorial waters of North Cyprus and added: This has, in effect, refuted Greek Cypriot claims that their sovereignty extends over the north of the island.

Moreover, Sener Levent in his column Angle in the Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (15/06/06), mocked the above statement of Talat, writing:

The Greek Cypriot side does not have any influence, any authority or any word over North of the Cyprus.

    Wonderful Talat

In fact has anyone said that they have any influence or authority?

    Of course not!

Without any reason where this (statement) come from now?

Have the Greek Cypriots said that they have any authority?

In fact is not their complaint that they do not have any influence, authority or a say here?

Have they stopped for 32 years now to explain that to the world?

    What are they saying?

    - North Cyprus is under occupation We are not there Turkey is thereThe Turkish army is there

    Tassos says to you:

    -It is under occupation

    You reply to him:

-Your word does not count here

    Did it or

Was it left over for you to confirm Tassos?

Look what all the well-known reports say:

-An area that is not controlled by the Republic of Cyprus!...

    What does that mean?

    Dont you think a bit?

[02] Information leaked from the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the technical committees

Turkish Cypriot daily YENI DUZEN newspaper (15.06.06) reports that Mehmet Ali Talat s advisor Mr Rait Pertev had a meeting yesterday with the special representative of the UN Secretary-General to Cyprus Mr Michael Möller and the Head of the Diplomatic Office of the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Tasos Tzionis

The paper writes that the Greek Cypriot side did not support the proposal of the Turkish Cypriot side regarding the starting of the works of the Technical Committees by the end of June. It also notes that the self-styled presidency did not give any information as regards what it was said at the meeting. However, it was learned that the Greek Cypriot side appears not willing to agree to the functioning of the technical committees.

The establishment or not of the committees will be announced after a couple of days, when the meetings between the parties will be over, writes Yeni Duzen.

[03] Tan: 'We will continue progressing on the way leading to EU membership

Ankara Anatolia news agency (14/06/06), reported that Mr Namik Tan, spokesman of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking at a weekly press briefing on Wednesday, said, ''Turkey's Action Plan for the Cyprus issue explains methods to resolve the question. We call on both the Greek Cypriot administration and the other relevant parties to put into practice the plan to resolve the Cyprus issue. This is a process bringing forth responsibilities for both parties. Any problem cannot be resolved only with Turkey's efforts. Turkey has made important sacrifices so far.''

Noting that compromise was one of the most important parts of the European culture, Mr Tan told reporters: We are determined to maintain our EU membership process on the basis of compromise. We may face some difficulties. This fact is valid for all countries. But the most important thing is to overcome those difficulties through dialogue and compromise. We will not make any concessions from our determination. It is meaningless to connect Turkey's EU membership process with the Cyprus issue. We will continue progressing on the way leading to EU membership with great determination.''

Upon a question about high-level meetings of TRNC (breakaway regime in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus) self-styled authorities, Mr Tan said: Mr Mehmet Ali Talat met German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier recently. Mr Talat is expected to meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair in the coming months. Turkey will maintain its efforts to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue. We believe that our efforts will yield concrete results soon.''

Upon a question about the planned visit of Gul to the United States, Mr Tan told reporters that a certain date had not been set for the visit yet.

When asked whether Turkey would request for compensation after release of the report about the collision of Turkish and Greek war planes in the international air zone over the Aegean Sea, Mr Tan said that they were planning to ask for compensation.

[04] A documentary for the ancient city of Salamis was prepared by the illegal regime

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (15.06.06) reports that a documentary referring to the magnificent history and heritage of the ancient city of Salamis has been prepared for broadcasting.

The Salamis documentary will be presented today, at 11 o clock, at the Ataturk Cultural Centre in occupied Lefkosia.

According to the paper, the documentary will approximately last for 52 minutes. The stage production belongs to Uygar Erdim and the film script has the signature of the journalist and program producer, Gokhan Altiner.

The paper also reports that among those who supported the documentary is the Turkish so-called embassy in the occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

The documentary is a cooperation between the illegal East Mediterranean University (DAU) and the Lefkosia KITABEK Association.
