[09] Turkish Cypriot paper argues that the statements by Erdogan and Gul show that they are adopting Ecevit´s and Denktas´ non-solution is a solution policy.

[01] Turkey wants to be called European but the Turkish Foreign Ministry continues to declare arrogantly that it will not recognize an EU member state it occupies with 40,000 troops

The Ministry's spokesman Namik Tan also indicated that Turkey's pledge to sign the protocol extending Ankara Agreement to the 10 new EU members will be honored. "Once negotiations are completed and the conditions are acceptable, we will proceed with the signing of the protocol," commented Tan.

Asked by a journalist about what he meant by "conditions," Tan replied that Turkey will not recognize the Greek Cypriot administration under any circumstances... "We have made clear our position on this issue. The EU has assured us on December 17 that our signature would not imply, either directly or indirectly, any recognition of the Greek Cypriots as the legitimate government of Cyprus," said Tan."

[02] Journalists protest for the changes to the penal code after Turkey got an accession date from the EU

The Turkish Journalists' Association arranged the march with the aim to ''have the journalists get used to the roads that end up at Courthouse''

The march started from Cagaloglu district at 11.00 local time in Istanbul and will end in front of the Istanbul Courthouse in Sultanahmet district.

A press statement will be made after the march.

Fifteen journalists' organizations sent a letter yesterday (Wednesday) to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan conveying their worries on certain articles of the new Turkish Penal Code which is being criticized for paving the way to imprisonment for press crimes.

[04] Talat responds to President Papdopoulos´ call to the UN to start the process for a solution

Mr Talat also said: "He may have been trying to draw a picture of a pro-solution leader to influence the visiting Polish President who's been paying a visit to 'South Cyprus'."

Mr Talat pointed to Mr Papadopoulos' touring of the buffer zone with his Polish guest, and said this visit presented a picture of a leader who was responsible for its creation by supporting the "NO" vote in last year's referendum.

Mr Talat said he would try to contact the Polish President to explain to him that it is not the Turkish Cypriots, who are responsible for the island's division.

[05] Mr Denktas called on the "Assembly" to support the "State" and "independence"

Mr Denktas' call came during a courtesy visit paid to him yesterday by the so-called Speaker of the Assembly, Ms Fatma Ekenoglu, after her re-election to the post.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr Denktas expressed the hope that all political parties will work together to give the necessary answer to the Greek Cypriot side.

Recalling that Turkey had made it clear several times that it will not recognise the Republic of Cyprus and will continue to recognise the "TRNC" even if the Ankara Agreement is extended to include all members of the European Union, Mr Denktas said that the Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul talked about the existence of "two peoples" and "two states" in Cyprus yesterday and added: "So there is no need for the Turkish Cypriot Side to create an atmosphere that we are ready to give up our statehood and independence and make new openings.".

Mr Denktas concluded: "The 'TRNC' - as a 'sovereign state' - will not have to recognise the 'Greek Cypriot Administration' even if Turkey signs the Ankara Protocol and recognises the 'Greek Cypriot Administration'."

[06] JDP MP asks the USA to make a step in favour of Turkey on the issues of Cyprus and the PKK, in order to overcome the tension in the Turkish-American relations

Then the paper writes, inter alia, the following:

"Celik warned that for example the fact that there is not the sufficient support by the EU and the USA on the issue of Cyprus 'creates material for marginal groups'. Responding to a question, Faruk Celik pointed out that in case the USA makes a step on the issue of Cyprus, a significant part of the Turkish - American tension will be ended. Celik noted that in case the USA makes a step on the issue of the terrorist PKK organization, the view of the public opinion will change and said that there are still casualties in the struggle with the PKK".

[07] Eroglu expressed the hope that no interference will take place in the so-called presidential elections of the occupation regime

Mr Eroglu made these statements in occupied Morfou in the framework of his election campaign. "I hope that no interference will take place in these elections like in the previous elections, however, I feel anxiety about this", he said.

[08] Turkish Cypriot newspaper reports that while a match was fixed between Nea Salamina and Yeni Cami FIFA started to soften its attitude towards Northern Cyprus

The paper adds: "While it was finalised for a match to be held on the 26th of this month in Larnaca between Yeni Cami and Nea Salamina from FIFA too some indications of softening have started to come towards Northern Cyprus".

The paper, which invokes sources, writes that an application was made on this issue to FIFA which gave permission to the players of the Dutch team to play the football match in occupied Cyprus. According to the paper, an official letter was received by the pseudostate´s football federation from the Dutch team.

The paper also writes that there is a high possibility in September or October that a four-team football championship to be organised in the Ataturk Stadium in occupied Cyprus, in which the so-called A´ national football team of the pseudostate will participate, along with teams that will come from three countries.

The paper also reports that the same team met the occupied area´s so-called A´ National team in a place near Holland last year.

[B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[09] Turkish Cypriot paper argues that the statements by Erdogan and Gul show that they are adopting Ecevit´s and Denktas´ non-solution is a solution policy

In its regular "Diary" column the paper writes: "The recent statements of Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Affairs Minister Abdullah Gul on Cyprus have been reflected with very interesting titles in the Greek Cypriot press. One newspaper has written that 'the voice belonged to Gul and the policy to Ecevit'. To tell the truth, this could not be considered as not being right. Erdogan and Gul were those who have been speaking, but the father of the idea they expressed was Ecevit and Denktas. What have they said? They said: 'There are two separate peoples and two separate states in Cyprus' or 'the territory taken with blood cannot be given away at the table'. What is left for them to say is that 'the non-solution is the solution'! How interesting is the fact that we are now listening from Erdogan and Gul the words we have been listening for years from Denktas and Ecevit.

Where to are we dragged? Why have we not been able to undertake an initiative for a solution and peace until today? Is this how our situation should have been at a time when the 50-year Denktas era is over? If we are not able to make a step and the situation continues the same as it is now after 17 April when Denktas withdraws from the palace and retires, then will that mean that all we have been saying until today are proved groundless? What will those who have been saying that 'the non-solution is Denktas' do? How will they explain to the community the lack of solution after Denktas is gone? Will it be by attacking Papadopoulos again? Is this very persuasive? If it was persuasive, would they not believe Denktas as well? Does he not always throw the blame onto the other side as well?

We think that after Denktas is gone explaining the non-solution to the people will not be as easy as it was before. Those in our community who do not want to see Turkey's occupation have exaggerated so much the role of Denktas that they convinced everybody that everything will be mended after he is gone. His withdrawal will undoubtedly be magnificent. And we will send him to the black pages of the history, not the white ones. However, unfortunately this again is not enough to solve everything".
