[01] Turkish Cypriot political parties could not agree on the date of the "early elections"

During the yesterday´s session of the "assembly", the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) suggested that the "elections" should be conducted on 25 December 2004, but the National Unity Party (NUP) reacted arguing that it could not accept this proposal because on 26 December 2004 its General congress will take place.

The paper writes that according to the internal "regulations" of the "assembly", article 88, of those regulations stipulates that if a motion for "early elections" is rejected, the body could not discuss another proposal for "elections" before 90 days passed from the date the first motion is rejected. On 20 September 2004 the "assembly" had rejected a motion for "early elections" submitted" by the partners in the RTP-DP "coalition government".

Meanwhile, in statements in Turkey, the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas said that he would delegate Mr Mehmet Ali Talat to form a new "government" in case the a motion for holding early "elections" had not been approved by the "assembly". Mr Denktas expressed also the opinion that no stable "government" would be formed from the "early elections" as well.

Furthermore, Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (05.11.04) reports that the "early elections" have been left for February 2005.

[02] YENI DUZEN publishes the second part of the public opinion poll according to which 35.5% prefers Talat for the "presidency" of the occupation regime

The opinion poll conducted by EKART Consultants and Marketing Information Ltd between 23 and 27 October, 2004. According to the paper, 601 persons living in the occupied part of Nicosia (190), Famagusta (154), Kyrenia (107), Morfou (86) and Trikomo (64) participated in the poll.

Asked who they would like to see as the next "president" of the pseudostate, the participants in the opinion poll answered as follows:

Mehmet Ali Talat:    35.5%
Rauf Denktas:        21.9%
Mustafa Akinci:      10.3%
Dervis Eroglu:        4.0%
Ertugrul Hasipoglu:   2.4%
No candidate:         3.5%
No answer:           19.0%
Other candidates:     3.4%

Asked whatever they believe that Turkey will get a date from the EU on the 17th of December, in order to start accession negotiations, the participants answered as follows:

Yes:       51.6%
No:        40.1%
No answer:  8.3%

Asked about how much they trust the various institutions of the pseudostate, 67.5% of the participants answered that they trust the army, 44.5% answered that they trust the "police", 41.1% answered that they trust the "prime minister", 38.8% answered that they trust the jurisdiction system, while 37.2% answered that they trust the "president".
