According to illegal Bayrak TV, (15.08.04), the so-called Prime Minister, Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, went to Istanbul with a sudden decision and met with the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

After the two-hour and forty minute meeting, Erdogan emerged from his house and escorted Talat to his car.

No statement was issued concerning Erdogan-Talat meeting.

[02] Occupation Force Commanders to transfer duties

According to local Turkish Cypriot daily VOLKAN newspaper (15.08.04), the occupation force commanders in the occupied area will change in the light of the decisions the Supreme Military Council (SMC) made in Turkey. Lt. Gen. Isik Kosaner, commander of the Turkish occupation force in north Cyprus who will become a full general in accordance with the SMC decisions on 30 August, will transfer his duties to Maj. Gen. Hasan Memisoglu. The change-of-command ceremony will be held at the command headquarters of the Turkish occupation force in occupied Kyrenia on Tuesday. Maj. Gen. Hasan Memisoglu will call on Rauf Denktas at 9:00 and Mehmet Ali Talat at 10:00 today.

Brig. Gen. Necmettin Baykul, commander of the Turkish Cypriot "Security Forces" who has been promoted to the rank of Major General, will transfer his duties to Brig Gen Tevfik Ozkilic.

Maj. Gen. Fikri Gonultas, commander of the 28th Division, will transfer his duties to Maj Gen Aydemir Curcioglu today.

[03] Denktas calls on the relatives of the Turkish Cypriot "martyrs" to appeal to the ECHR and demand "moral compensation"

Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (15.08.04) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas has said that the Turkish Cypriots would not abandon their "state" only because the Greek Cypriots want them to do so.

In a statement on Saturday during a commemoration ceremony at Maratha and Sandalaris villages, Mr Denktas argued that the Turkish Cypriots living there have not forgotten the "crimes of the Greek Cypriots during the 1963-74 period" and that this is the reason for their voting "no" in the 24 April referendum.

The paper writes also that Mr Denktas called on the relatives of the Turkish Cypriot "martyrs" to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and demand "moral compensation".

[04] Serdar Denktas calls on the Turkish Cypriot NGOs to support his "government's" initiatives on putting an end to their "isolation"

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (14.08.04) reports that Serdar Denktas, so-called deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs of the occupation regime, has called on the Turkish Cypriot Non Governmental Organzations (NGOs) to raise their voice and support his "government's" initiatives on putting an end to their "isolation".

In statements on Friday during a meeting with a delegation of the Turkish HAK-Is Confederation trade union, which visited the occupied areas of Cyprus upon invitation of the so-called public servants trade union (KAMU - SEN), Mr Denktas alleged that the Turkish Cypriots have proven to the world some things and supported that their gain should not be only "plain sympathy".

"We are expecting them to go further than this. We shall continue to give this struggle together with our Motherland Turkey", he said.

Mr Denktas noted that a great activity would begin in September and added: "While moving towards this date, we think that making our voice to be heard to the international community and the civilian organizations to undertake initiatives in parallel with the government is really important and useful".

Meanwhile, referring to the same issue KIBRIS, under the banner headlines "We are moving to Brussels", writes that during the period until the first half of September 2004, when the European Union is expected to take some important decisions on the regulations regarding the free trade and the financial aid to the Turkish Cypriots, the so-called government of the occupation regime and Turkish Cypriot NGOs will be visiting Brussels and exert some intensive efforts on the issue.

[05] Talat says Akinci's traveling to Athens via Larnaca is "normal" and does not harm the Turkish Cypriots

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (14.08.04) reports that Mehmet Ali Talat, so-called prime minister of the occupation regime, has said that the leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement, Mustafa Akinci's traveling to Athens via Larnaca Airport in order to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, was "normal".

Responding to a question on Friday, Mr Talat noted that there was nothing to be said on the issue, that this was a decision that Mr Akinci had taken and that this decision did not consist a behaviour which harms the Turkish Cypriots.

Mr Talat alleged that the basic issue was the fact that the "Papadopoulos government", as he described the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, has prevented the Olympic Flame from crossing over to the occupied part of Cyprus.

[06] Mrs Laura Kennedy visits the office of the so-called Turkish Cypriot representative in Washington

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (14.08.04) reports that Mrs Laura Kennedy, who recently appointed the US State Department representative for Cyprus, visited on Friday the office of the so-called Turkish Cypriot representative in Washington, Mr Osman Ertug.

Mrs Kennedy made no statements regarding the meeting.

[07] "Our mountains have been turned into gravel and sand"

Under the above title Turkish Cypriot daily ORTAM newspaper (15.08.04) reports that the stone quarries on the occupied Pendathaktylos Mountain range are destroying the mountain more and more everyday because of the blasts they cause.

The paper writes that the heart of everybody breaks when one sees the mountain. ORTAM reminds the great fire that burned and destroyed Pentadaktylos back in 1996 and notes that no one knows who did this crime and why.

"The solution process which has been opened with the Annan plan was the reason for a new era to start for the Pentadaktylos Mountains", writes the paper and reminds the great increase of the constructions in the northern part of the mountain.

The stone quarries, the number of which increases in the area of occupied Kythrea and Vouno, cause also a great damage to the environment with the explosions they create, concludes ORTAM.

    [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

    [08] To whom Varosha belongs?

Local Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (15.08.4) in the "Diary" column writes under the title "To whom Varosha belongs" and criticizes the so-called prime minister of the illegal regime Mehmet Ali Talat. The article says:

"Had the Annan plan been accepted by both sides and according to the plan, on 11 August Varosha would have been handed over to the Greek Cypriots. Starting from this point Mehmet Ali Talat, as though he is avenging for the Greek Cypriots for their 'no ' vote, he tells the Greek Cypriots 'had you said 'yes' in the referendum you would have been in Varosha today!'

In fact this as well is a question mark! Would they have really been in Varosha had they said yes? What would have been if Turkey refused to hand over Varosha? No body knew what would have been, because there was no provisions in the plan regarding this issue! We had said earlier that Turkey had said yes to the plan for the EU membership. Turkey said yes, not because it was very enthusiastic to put the plan into practice, because it was hundred percent sure that the Greek Cypriots will say 'no'. If by a miracle the Greek Cypriots had suddenly said yes then Turkey could find thousands of excuses for not applying the plan !

Despite this, let us put aside this and just consider that Varosha was going to be handed over to the Greek Cypriots on 11 August, but it is not given to them because they did not say yes. If this is the case one must ask the following question then: 'to whom Varosha belong to?'' Does it belong to us? Since we have not handed it over then it should belong to us? If that is the case, why nobody is dwelling there? Why we are not opening it to settlement? Why we have left it there for snakes and other rodents? Is it for that we will use it as trump card and tell the Greek Cypriots 'if you accept our proposal for settlement then we will hand over Varosha?'

The heart breaking dilapidating state that Varosha is today was several times main subject of the major important press organs. In several places it was mentioned as the symbol of the 'Turkish Barbarism' and we still before this monument of shame dare to boast about, is it not so?".
