[01] Turkey reportedly prevents the Turkish settlers from going back to their country

Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (03.08.04) reports that Turkey takes measures to increase the population of the Turkish settlers in the occupied part of Cyprus and puts bureaucratic obstacles for their return back to their country.

According to the paper, if a family of Turkish settlers wishes to return to Turkey, it should submit to the "embassy" of Turkey in occupied Cyprus a photocopy of the first and last pages of its passport, documents for entrance and exit from the occupied areas, which should be approved by the "police", the "ministry" of internal affairs and the "district officer", a certificate of residence in occupied Cyprus, which should also be approved by the authorities of the community, the "ministry" of internal affairs and the "district officer" and a certificate of birth and photocopy of its registration in Turkey's registrar of population.

AFRIKA writes that the "embassy" of Turkey has stopped paying the money for the tickets of those settlers who wished to return. It is said that Prime Minister Erdogan himself has given categorical instructions on this issue, concludes AFRIKA.

[02] The occupation regime demolishes houses in five villages of occupied Famagusta district

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (03.08.04) reports that the so-called ministry of internal affairs continues its work regarding demolishing houses which cause danger at the occupied villages of Gypsou, Piyi, Milia, Knodara and Genagra.

According to the paper 96 buildings will be pulled down in the above-mentioned five villages and the work is expected to end within three months. The aim is creating for young people the opportunity of having plots for building about 400 houses.

Mr Ozkan Murat, so-called minister of internal affairs of the occupation regime visited yesterday the village of Gypsou and examined the demolitions. In his statements he said that their aim was to pull down all the houses made of sun-dried bricks and clean the places where insects, rats and snakes wander around.

[03] The occupation regime alleges that Greek Cypriot activities create tension

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (03.08.04) reports that the so-called ministry of foreign affairs of the occupation regime has "warned" the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the government of the Republic of Cyprus that the activities planned on 11 August by Greek Cypriots, who will reportedly try to go to Famagusta via the crossing point at Strovilya, will create tension in the island.

In a statement issued yesterday the "ministry" alleges that UNFICYP and the government of the Republic will be responsible for "the danger and the negative results" which could be created in case the activities are realized.

[04] The editor-in-chief of HALKIN SESI reiterates that lieutenant general Hasan Kundakci has ordered the murder of Solomou in 1996

Writing in his daily column in Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (03.08.04), Akay Cemal, the paper's editor-in-chief, reiterates that retired lieutenant general Hasan Kundakci has admitted that he had ordered the murder of Solomos Solomou during the funeral of Tasos Isaak in Dherynia in August 1996.

In his article under the title "Remembering general Kundakci in the eve of the march towards Varosha'", Mr Cemal refers to a gathering at the occupied village of Sinda, where retired general Kundakci, other army officials and people from the village had participated. When asked to talk about the 1996 incidents, the general said, inter alia, the following regarding the murder of Solomos Solomou:

"'I had withdrawn my soldiers into the trees. However, climbing on the flag pole and trying to bring down the flag was not in our agreement. In any case it could not be. When I saw the young Greek Cypriot climbing on the flag pole I got very angry and I gave an order consisting of two words: Bring him down! You saw what happened afterwards. '".

    [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[05] Columnists in Turkish Cypriot papers support the right of the refugees to return to the homes and properties

Serhat Incirli in his regular Column "Letter from London" in Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (03.08.04) refers to the inalienable right of the people to return to their own property and place of birth. "No one has the right to cheat people with empty promises or pledges", Incirli notes and says that if the Cyprus problem is going to be solved then it is necessary to get the consent of the people who are refugees in their own land. Incirli specifically refers to the refugee municipalities of Karavas and Lapithos who recently submitted a petition to the UN Secretary-General and President Papadopoulos demanding respect for their right to return to their properties.

Incirli with no uncertain terms strongly supports the Greek and Turkish Cypriot displaced persons´ return to their ancestral homes and stresses that no one has the right to deprive these people of their right to return to their homes.

Moreover, Esref Cetinel in his column in Turkish Cypriot HALKIN SESI newspaper (03.08.04) in a vivid manner describes how the Greek Cypriot property belonging to Greek Cypriot refugees- who were forced by the invading Turkish Armies at gun point- to leave their homes and go to government controlled areas during the 1974 invasion, is being plundered by the occupation regime, mainly by the illegal settlers sent over by Turkey.

He admits that if the Cyprus problem is going to be solved then in one way or the other the property issue must be solved.

Cetinel is critical of those persons who recently started engaging in property selling or buying in the occupied area belonging to the Greek Cypriots.

He concludes by urging the occupation authorities to stop this practice, "otherwise" he says "We will have a serious headache".
