[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] The Turkish Foreign Ministry denies that Turkey will fulfill its obligations towards the new EU member CyprusAnkara TRT 2 Television (28.07.04) broadcast the following:"The Foreign Ministry declared that the allegation that the Turkish ports and airspace will be opened to the Greek Cypriots is a manifestation of the attempts by the Greek Cypriot side to counter the international reactions. In his weekly news conference, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Namik Tan was reminded about reports originating from the Greek Cypriot sector to the effect that Ankara has begun to allow the Greek Cypriot vessels to berth and to dock -- a right denied since 1974 -- and that the ports and the airspace will be opened to the Greek Cypriots. "The Greek Cypriot side, which has rejected the Annan plan, puts forward unfeasible proposals from time to time and launches various initiatives with various countries and institutions to counter the criticism and reactions directed against it on the international platform. The report at issue and the matter you have raised, are the manifestations of these same attempts and efforts on their part", Mr Namik Tan said. Also noting that he has no information about the Greek Cypriot Trade Minister holding contacts in Turkey last week, Tan said that at this stage the most important issue is the lifting of the embargo and isolation faced by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus." Besides, at the Foreign Ministersī Meeting of the Islamic Development Organization held in Istanbul, Iran was one of the countries which supported this". Mainland SABAH newspaper (29.07.04) reports that among the issues discussed between Mr Erdogan and the First Vice-President of Iran, Mr Muhammed Riza Arif was the "TRNC", as it calls they occupied areas of Cyprus. SABAH cites the following dialogue, which reportedly took place between Mr Erdogan and Mr Arif, under the subtitle: "We expect step on `TRNCī": Erdogan: "In the report submitted to the UN the injustice of the embargo imposed on the `TRNCī was stressed. The USA and the EU countries are taking steps to lift this isolation. We expect similar steps from Iran too". Arif: "On this issue we shall do everything in our hands".
