[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Political instability goes on in the occupied areas of Cyprus; Turkey accused of using the Turkish Cypriots to solve its own problemsTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (16.07.04) reports that the so-called assembly discussed yesterday the censure motion submitted by the National Unity Party (NUP) against the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) - Democratic Party (DP) "government". The voting will be taking place tomorrow Saturday.The so-called Prime Minister of the occupation regime, Mehmet Ali Talat said that he would not ask to establish a new "government" in case the proposal is approved. The DP leader, Serdar Denktas noted that they agreed with their coalition partner on the issue of holding early "elections" in November in case the censure motion is not approved. The NUP proposal is supported by 25 "MPs". The leader of the United Cyprus Party (UCP) Izzet Izcan, the position of whom, was not clear until yesterday and who is expected to determine the outcome of the voting, clarified his stance saying that he would not support the NUPīs proposal. "If we overthrow a prime minister who supports the solution, who shall we bring to his place", he wondered noting that the community would not accept a coalition with the NUP. The UCP issued a statement yesterday supporting the establishment of a "government" between the forces within the Turkish Cypriot community which voted in favour of the Annan Plan in 24 April referendum. Meanwhile, the Patriotic Unity Movement (PUM) in a statement issued yesterday, described the censure motion and the discussions regarding the holding of early "elections" as a show. The PUM notes that the "assembly" has no authority and power and added that the early "elections" will be held in case Turkey wants this to happen. "Until Turkey settles its own problems it will not permit any election to take place here and the creation of a government which it does not want", stresses PUM. [02] Gul, EU Palacio hold joint press conference, answer questions on CyprusAnkara Anatolia news agency (15.07.04) reports that the Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul and European Commission Vice President Loyola de Palacio, who is currently in Turkey on an official visit, held a joint press conference.Replying to a question, Gul said that the Cyprus issue was also brought onto the agenda during his meeting with De Palacio. He underlined that EU Commission decision on ending of economic "isolation" of Turkish Cypriots should be approved by the Council of Europe. In her turn, replying to questions about the decision of EU Commission on softening of "isolation" of the Turkish Cypriot side, De Palacio said that they were disappointed with the results of the referenda in the island, stressing that they did not want a divided island, but they wanted to see it as a whole. De Palacio said that they had started to take steps to soften "isolation" of the Turkish Cypriot side and they had been trying to close the gap between the two sides in Cyprus with economic aid packages. Noting that the decision of the EU Commission would not be the ''last step'', De Palacio added that also transportation issue would come onto the agenda through new steps in the future. [03] A fire in occupied Lapithos village turned 50 donum of forest land into ashesTurkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (16.07.04) reports that in two different fires that broke out in occupied Lapithos village, around 50 donum of forest land and some citrus orchards turned into ashes. As the paper writes, around 25 donum of olive, cypress and locust trees were burned down while 25 donum of land, cover with heath and citrus trees, were turned into ashes.
