[01] Maronities to get their occupied properties but no word about the houses and properties of the Greek Cypriots

Under the front-page banner title "Return to the Maronites", Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (07.07.04) reports that the "council of ministers" of the occupation regime decided on 28 June 2004 to return the occupied properties and the land used for agricultural purposes to the Maronites living in the free areas of the Republic of Cyprus.

According to the decision, which "for some reason has been kept secret until now", the land at the occupied village of Kormakitis will be returned to its owners, whereas at the other two Maronite villages, Karpasha and Asomatos, the land will not be returned because the above-mentioned villages are in military zone.

Noting that "the Moronites are getting their properties, even with delay", the paper writes that the properties of the Maronites who chose to live in the free areas of Cyprus after the 1974 Turkish invasion, were confiscated by the occupation regime in 1977 and they are leased since 1983.

KIBRIS considers this move as the first step towards the goal of reaching a solution in Cyprus and the accession of the Turkish Cypriots to the EU and notes that the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) made this move in accordance to the provisions of the Annan Plan regarding the minority rights and the EU norms.

[02] Talat to visit France and Germany; Reiterates that two more crossing points will be opened

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (07.07.04) reports that Mehmet Ali Talat, so-called Prime Minister of the occupation regime, said yesterday that conducting early "elections" in the occupied areas of Cyprus was inevitable and added that he considered the resignation of his "government" very risky, because this period the Turkish Cypriots intensified their contacts and long term struggle in the foreign policy field.

In statements at the illegal Tymbou airport upon his return from London, Mr Talat responded to those who demand the resignation of his "government" and argued that such an act would be a "very irresponsible behaviour".

"Some circles might not understand the struggle we are giving and ask for our resignation. However, resignation would mean the end of these efforts. Meeting the British Foreign Secretary as a Prime Minister of a government which resigned, would not even be discussed", said Mr Talat noting that in case he resigns his visits to France and Germany, planned for the next few days, will not be taking place.

Meanwhile, addressing the people on the occasion of the six months since his "government" was established, Mr Talat said that they never forget the promises they had given to the Turkish Cypriots and that they are in power in order to realize the expectations of the people.

Mr Talat supported that the fact that the acquis communautaire is not applied in the occupied areas of Cyprus at the moment, works against the Greek Cypriot side.

Referring to the negotiations towards reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem and the Annan Plan he said that they achieved having included in the plan "the possible most advantageous changes and assurances for the Turkish Cypriots".

Mr Talat reiterated that two more crossing points between the occupied and the free areas of Cyprus will shortly be opened. These points will be at Morphou area and at Ledra Street in the old town of Nicosia.

[03] The Turkish Prime Minister stresses that no troop withdrawal from the Republic of Cyprus is in the plans

Ankara Anatolia news agency (06.07.04) reported from Ankara that the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan left on Tuesday for Bulgaria for a two-day official visit at the invitation of his Bulgarian counterpart Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Erdogan told reporters before his departure that Bulgaria was a friend of Turkey, and that economic and trade relations between the two countries had developed in recent years.

Turkey was the fifth trade partner of Bulgaria, Erdogan stressed. He said bilateral trade volume which was around 1.3 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2003 would increase soon.

Investments of Turkish companies in Bulgaria amounted to 300 million U.S. dollars, he also noted.

Erdogan recalled that Turkish Sise Cam, a Turkish glassware company, would lay the foundation of its 160 million-dollar factory in Bulgaria during his visit.

On the other hand PM Erdogan denied news reports that Turkey would withdraw 5,000 troops deployed in the occupied areas of Cyprus, and said that Turkey was not planning such a withdrawal.

Asked what he discussed with King Abdallah of Jordan during their meeting yesterday Erdogan said that he and King Abdallah discussed the Middle East, and economic and trade relations between Jordan and Turkey.

[04] The Democratic Party of Serdar Denktas has agreed for early so-called elections

Ankara Anatolia (06.07.04) reported from occupied Nicosia that the Democratic Party (DP) Executive Board on Tuesday issued a written statement.

The statement said: ''The DP Central Executive Board discussed possible government formulas taking into consideration the current parliament structure. It has been decided that any formula can not be operational in the long term and early election is the way out.''

The statement said the recommendatory decision that has been taken would be resulted on July 12 in a party group meeting.

The DP executives expressed their conviction that all political parties should reach a compromise for the date of elections.

The Republican Turkish Party (RTP) on Monday proposed early elections for Septemebr 26.

[05] The power of the 4th Infantry Regiment in occupied Cyprus was handed over to Colonel Salih Cengaver Cem

Turkish Cypriot daily HALKIN SESI newspaper (07.07.04) reports that a ceremony took place yesterday during which the power of the 4th Infantry Regiment of the occupation force troops in occupied Cyprus was handed over. Colonel Mustafa Erguven, who served at the 4th Infantry Regiment for two years, handed over the power to Colonel Salih Cengaver Cem.

[06] Sukru Sina Gurel declares candidacy for Democratic Left Party leadership post

Turkish Daily News (07.07.04) reports that Professor Sukru Sina Gurel has declared his candidacy for leader of the Democratic Left Party (DLP), a post that will be decided at a congress scheduled for July 25.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Gurel said the congress would be a turning point for both the party and Turkey, adding that the efforts of modest democratic leftists would once again take the party to the heights of power. "The only way to realize this objective was to follow, develop and publicize the teachings of current leader Bulent Ecevit", he said.

Sukru Sina Gurel stated that the present policies of the ruling Justice and Development Party would most probably result in the holding of national elections sometime at the end of 2005 and called on all leftists to get ready for a rebirth that would lead the party once again to power.

According to Gurel, the current situation of the state was almost comparable to the way the country was during the struggle for independence. He called on all to struggle against those who were trying to turn the nation into one of religious groupings. He said the only political force that combined the strength, experience and knowledge to combat such movements was the DLP and that July 25 should be the day when the DLP would prove its maturity and dynamism.

He said the congress would not be just a changing of party leadership but would also feature party leader Ecevit's retirement from politics and his moving on to a higher standing. Gurel noted that Ecevit's important and honoured place in the party would be preserved.

Gurel said the reason Turkey had come so far was because national interests and rights had always been protected. Those who currently governed Turkey were looking overseas for solutions to domestic matters because of their submissiveness, said Gurel. "The best opportunity for Turkey to make the necessary future transformation lies with the hardworking national democratic leftists of the DLP. Together with my leftist friends, I am seeking to assume the responsibility to realize this change," he concluded.
