[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktas admits that there are common graves of Greek Cypriots in the occupied areas and says that it is a shame if the UN know something about missing persons and have not announced itTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (30.07.03) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has admitted that there are common graves of Greek Cypriots in the occupied areas and alleged that these people have been killed during the coup organized by Greek junta against President Makarios in 1974.In statements yesterday during a meeting with a delegation of the so-called ^ÓSecurity Forces^Ô headed by their commander brigadier general Necmettin Baykul, Mr Denktas claimed that the Greek Cypriot side is exploiting the issue of the missing persons and that it is accusing the Turks of having killed all these people ignoring those killed during the coup. Mr Denktas alleged also the following: ^ÓIn the north there are common graves of Greek Cypriots killed and buried by Samson. These appeared on maps published by the Greek Cypriots. When Turkey came they have added the names of the people killed by their savageness to the list of the missing persons. Those who know their graves may come and take their remains^Ô. Mr Denktas said that he had discussed this with former President Clerides noting that he told Mr Clerides that when the issue of those allegedly killed in the coup and buried in occupied Cyprus is closed, the Turkish side could give the Greek Cypriot side its soldiers killed during the 1974 invasion of Cyprus. Addressing the Greek Cypriot side Denktas said: ^ÓCome, take them and give them to their families. Afterwards we shall give you the soldiers killed in the war because we shall not be under the accusations of your propaganda that the Turks killed everybody. In exchange we shall take our dead civilians and martyrs as you have promised^Ô. Commenting on information that the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus has an unpublished report on the fate of the persons whose names are on the list of the missing persons since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Mr Denktas said: ^ÓIf the UN have such information it is a great shame that they have not given it to the two sides until today. Why have they waited for such a long time? Why have they not given it?^Ô Mr Denktas alleged that the Turkish side wanted the Committee on Missing Persons to begin functioning as soon as possible so that the issue of the missing persons may be solved. Meanwhile, commenting on the issue, the Turkish Cypriot daily AFRIKA newspaper (30.07.03) writes on its front page the following: ^ÓWe are asking Denktas and we want an answer: Where have you buried them? Denktas is continuing to exploit the missing persons issue in Cyprus. Denktas alleges that in the north there are common graves of Greek Cypriots killed and buried by Sampson. However, he is not mentioning anything about Bedrettin Demirel^Òs statement (Translator^Òs note: Bedrettin Demirel was the commander of the Turkish forces, which conducted the 1974 invasion of Cyprus) that ^Ñwe have buried them so that they do not stink^Ò. ^ÅWhere are the graves of the ^Ñsoldiers killed in the war^Ò whom Denktas promised to return after negotiating with the Greek Cypriots? ^Å^Ô. [02] Denktas alleges that the Turkish Cypriots are in danger from the Greek Cypriots and attacks again the Annan Plan and its supportersTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (30.07.03) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has attacked again the Annan Plan and those who support it and alleged that the life and the freedom of the Turkish Cypriots are in danger because the Greek Cypriots want to get hold of the whole of Cyprus.Talking yesterday after separate meetings with delegations of the terrorist TMT Association and the so-called ^ÓSecurity Forces^Ô, Mr Denktas reiterated that the Turkish Cypriots will be in great danger in case the Turkish Army leaves the island and added: ^ÓThe EU norms are the main element of the Annan Plan. The international lawyers are saying that ^Ñyou will be in trouble in case this happens^Ò. You must be blind if you do not see this. Therefore we shall support the `state´. ^ÅThe Greek Cypriots want the whole of Cyprus. We are saying that this could not happen. The two `states´, the two `people´ could live side by side and cooperate. They could even establish a common administration. However, every day we must support that the Greek Cypriots are not and will not be our government^Ô. Addressing some Turkish Cypriot opposition party leaders, newspapers and the chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and commenting on the fact that they have criticized the Greek Cypriot side on some issues, Mr Denktas told them ^Ógood morning^Ô, implying that they have been asleep until now. Commenting on the allegations of Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), that both Mr Denktas and President Papadopoulos are the same and do not want a solution to the Cyprus problem, Mr Denktas argued that Mr Talat committed ^Óa gaffe^Ô and that he ^Óassaulted^Ô him. ^ÓI am returning exactly the same (accusations) to him^Ô, he added. Furthermore, Mr Denktas added that a single front should be created in the ^ÓNational Cause^Ô and accused the opposition leaders of having contacts with foreigners without informing him. Mr Denktas concluded that these leaders misinformed the foreigners presenting themselves as the representatives of the Turkish Cypriots and telling them that they accept the Annan Plan.
