[01] Reference to Cyprus during a press conference with VATAN newspaper

Under the subtitle: "Annan's plan would have been approved if a referendum were held in the TRNC", the paper reports the following on Mr Gul's statements on Cyprus:

"Unfortunately, we could not make substantial progress regarding the Cyprus question. We were planning to hold a referendum in the `TRNC'. [Turkish Cypriot Leader] Rauf Denktas was of the opinion that the `TRNC' public was not supporting Annan's plan. We told him that the matter would be resolved if the plan was eventually rejected in a referendum, which we advised him to hold. In our opinion, the Turkish Cypriots would endorse the plan whereas Denktas was convinced that 70 to 80 percent of the voters would oppose it. He accepted to hold a referendum, but he subsequently changed his mind because of his growing anxieties.

"The Hague process started afterwards. Denktas first said he would not go there and we urged him to go. We told him: "You should go there keeping a low profile. If you do that, we could make progress during negotiations." Unfortunately, he did not prefer to sit at the negotiating table silently. He made statements arguing that Annan's plan was unacceptable. In fact, the Greek Cypriot side was concerned that we might accept to negotiate. Thus, we could not use that card efficiently and played into the hands of the other side.

"We had sentimental conversations with Denktas during that process. He said that they would be obliged to return to Turkey, their homeland, if they accepted the plan. He noted that the Palestinians were also waging a struggle for their land. I responded: 'Palestinian children are throwing stones to Israeli tanks, but young people are shouting slogans against you in front your home.'"

[02] Turkish military vessels illegally docked at occupied Kyrenia port

Its main goal is to test the search and rescue capabilities acquired by the "TRNC" recently and thus to manifest and confirm the "TRNC's" sovereign rights in the zone of its responsibility. The Turkish Naval Forces ships to take part in the exercise arrived in the "TRNC" and docked at the Kyrenia port this morning. The citizens could visit the ships today and tomorrow within specified times.

[03] Twenty-two persons were granted the "citizenship" of the pseudostate

"Twenty two persons of third generation Cypriot origin were granted the `TRNC' citizenship with decision of the Council of Ministers. According to the decision, which was published in the Official Gazette on the 12th of June, these persons were approved to be granted the citizenship provided that the necessary security investigations will take place and these investigations would have positive results.

The persons who are of third generation Cypriot origin and who were given the citizenship after the Council of Ministers' decision, dated 31st of March, are the following:

Filiz Handan Bagiguzel (his grandfather was born in 1914 in Ayios Symeon village), Mehmet Tahir Keser (his grandfather was born in 1898 in Kourou Monastiri village), Handan Onur (his grandfather was born in 1900 in Cyprus), Ahmet Fuoad Jamal Eddin (his grandmother was born in 1918 in Neochorio Kytheas village), Aynur Oguz (her grandfather was born 1905 in Kourou Monastiri village), Halil Tez (his grandfather was born in 1905 in Kourou Monastiri village), Ibrahim Tez (his grandfather was born in 1905 in Kourou Monastiri village),Teslime Yorulmaz ((his grandfather was born in 1905 in Kourou Monastiri village), Ayse Goksu (her grandfather was born in 1905 in Kourou Monastiri village), Hediye Hulya Uygur Kahramanoglu (her grandfather was born in 1883 in Cyprus), Evren Subasi (his grandfather was born in 1927 in Paphos town), Yousef Makki (his grandmother was born in 1915 in the village Syrianochori in Paphos), Khalifeh Makki (his grandmother was born in 1915 in the village Syrianochori in Paphos), Tugce Nazli Toprakoglu (Ankara 18.08.1982), Hanan Cemalettin (1969 Syria), Mahmut Cemalettin (1976 Syria), Nerman Abu Arab (20.05.1962 Mekka), Maher Abu Arab (30.06.1963 Saudi Arabia), Hafiza Abu Arab (11.10.1964), Samer Abu Arab (25.08.1968 Cairo), Mazen Abu Arab (19.11.1969 Saudi Arabia), Muhammed Abu Arab (01.01.1973 Saudi Arabia)."

[04] The occupation regime prepared a "law" for granting compensations to Greek Cypriots

According to KIBRIS, the most vital article of the "draft law" is the 10th Article, which provides that the Greek Cypriots who will appeal for compensation from the occupation regime should reject the right of acquiring their property. Furthermore, if they so wish, title deeds will be given to these persons for property left by the Turkish Cypriots in the free areas of Cyprus. According to the occupation regime the Turkish Cypriots have renounced their property rights in the free areas in favour of the pseudostate.

The Greek Cypriots who wish to appeal for compensation for their properties will have to prove that the property belonged to them before 1974 submitting the necessary evidence to a committee, which will be formed in the occupied areas. The paper writes that in case a Greek Cypriot proves that he owned the property, compensation will be paid to him according to the value of the property in 1974 and the rights for the lost of property. The source of the money is not mentioned in the "draft law", but according to the paper it is said that compensations will be paid from the "budget" of the pseudostate. According to the 19th Article of the "draft law" the rights of those who will not appeal to the committee will be saved for at the above-mentioned committee.

KIBRIS: "Verheugen: EU is ready to do whatever she can for the solution."

YENI CIZGI: "US Special Envoy for Cyprus Thomas Weston stressed: 'The Annan plan is the only alternative'." Verheugen: "The ball is in the hands of Denktas and Ankara".

BIRLIK: "The ball is in the hands of Denktas and Ankara", Verheugen said. And with the subtitle: "The Turkish Cypriots are the victims now, because if they cannot find a political solution here, there is no way to enjoy the benefits of membership in the European Union", Verheugen concluded.

ORTAM: "The problem is Denktas" and with the subtitle: "Weston and Verheugen came, saw, met and discussed.And Denktas read again what he knows."

KIBRISLI: "UN out! EU out!" and with the subtitle: "Weston came and left with anger.Now it is the turn of Verheugen. Today he will repeat the same things and will leave It is expected that Verheugen will infuriate Denktas once more .Because he claims that the EU and not the USA has a right over North Cyprus."

HALKIN SESI: "Verheugen spilt out poison" and with the subtitle: "Verheugen exhibited his known attitude; spilling out poison during a speech delivered yesterday before Turkish and Greek Cypriots Verheugen demonstrated that he does not see Cyprus in an impartial manner."

VOLKAN newspaper publishes as follows the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas' comments on Weston and Verheugen's statements: "There will be equality only if TRNC is recognised. We will accede into the EU only when Turkey becomes an EU member."
