[01] Statements by the Turkish Cypriot leader before and after, meeting President Clerides

Replying to the statement Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides made that the principle of two states would bring destruction to Cyprus, Denktas called on Mr Kasoulides to see the realities even though they might be bitter and alleged that it was the Greek Cypriots who brought division to Cyprus. Describing Kasoulides' statement as propaganda directed at the outside world, Denktas said that it is being said that the Greek Cypriot side wants a federation and the Turkish Cypriot side a confederation. He added that the Turkish Cypriot side is talking about two founding states, that the sides are choosing their words, and that neither side is putting a name on what it is thinking.

Denktas said: "The Turkish Cypriot side is talking about a joint state that will be established with the authorities granted to it by the two founding states and that will represent and speak on behalf of the two peoples. This is the path that leads from the current situation to unification. Kasoulides is talking about a unitary state, which is called a federation, however, he is not talking about the Greek Cypriot demand for the return of the refugees, as well as for a third of the territories. Neither is Kasoulides talking about the Greek Cypriot demand not to grant sovereignty to the Turkish Cypriots over the remaining two thirds of the territory. A detailed and written reply should be given to Kasoulides statement."

Referring to Kasoulides' remarks that nothing can be achieved by deceiving the world and that the Turkish Cypriots are in favour of division, Denktas said: "They are not even ashamed. They divided Cyprus. They divided the island by burying the Turkish Cypriots in mass graves. They divided the island by saying that they do not want us. They divided the island in order to exclude us. They did whatever they did in order to own the entire island. The Turkish Cypriots were rescued as a result of this division, began to live without fear and in a humane manner, and established their state. The Greek Cypriots now want the Turkish Cypriots to act as though they do not have a state and to accept the existence and sovereignty of the Cyprus Republic which the Greek Cypriots divided into two."

Denktas further said that the Greek Cypriots want to incorporate the Turkish Cypriot side within the Cyprus Republic and to grant certain rights, adding that this is sheer nonsense. He continued: "Let Kasoulides come to his senses. Let him see the realities. These realities are very bitter. The Greek Cypriot youth is not aware of the Cyprus realities. They are even being told that the coup was staged by Turkey. This is a crime against the future. The Greek Cypriots do not have the courage to tell the truth to their youth. They have committed such a massacre that they do not want to admit it to their youth. They are not saying the following: We committed genocide against the Turks. We tried to annihilate them, but we failed. They are trying to achieve something by holding Turkey, Denktas, and the Turkish Cypriot side responsible for this genocide and for everything else. They will not be able to achieve anything."

In reply to a question by a reporter, Denktas said that there is nothing new with regard to the missing persons issue and that the Greek Cypriots might want to raise it in a bid to be able to respond to the document submitted by the Turkish Cypriots earlier. Noting that there is no deviation from the essence of the talks, Denktas said that the missing persons issue will be placed on the agenda after the issues pertaining to the talks are discussed.

Rustem Tatar, who represented the Turkish Cypriot side at the Cyprus Missing Persons Committee, was also present at the Denktas-Clerides meeting. The delegation that has been accompanying Denktas at the talks so far did not attend today's meeting.

After the two-hour meeting, Denktas made a statement to reporters on his return to the occupied areas. He said that the Cyprus problem and the missing persons issues were discussed, adding that the same issues will be discussed at the meeting to be held on Friday 26 July.

In reply to a question on whether the Greek Cypriot side expressed a view on the missing persons issue, Denktas said: "We talked, we discussed. They did not submit any written document. We discussed. We listened to their views. We will continue our talks within the framework of those views."

Upon being reminded by a reporter about the statement made by the Cyprus Government Spokesman denying their armament efforts and calling for the demilitarisation of the island, Denktas said that the Turkish authorities are aware of all the Greek Cypriot activities, adding: "No one can cover up these activities through statements. The Greek Cypriots are engaged in extreme armament efforts. This Greek Cypriot stand is not wise. The Cyprus problem will be resolved through talks to be conducted within the framework of the realities and not through arms. We have a guarantor of 65 million at a distance of 60 kilometers. They know that, they have been saying that. Therefore, the issue is about speedily resolving this problem by adopting a realistic stand that acknowledges the state established by the Turkish Cypriots, which they left without a state, and the atmosphere of peace, which our guarantor secured by sacrificing its children. This has not been possible. Primarily these issues have to be accepted and resolved."

In reply to another question, Denktas said that the talks will be recessed for a while in August, adding that this will be a holiday as well as a new period of assessment for both sides.

[02] Denktas and Erel share the same views on the Cyprus problem

In brief statements prior to the meeting, Denktas said: "We will listen to what they have to say and we will discuss it." Erel, on his behalf, said that the aim of their visit is to discuss with Denktas.

The Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce, Mr Ali Erel, after the meeting, said that they were accused in the press last week that they want to enter into EU as a minority or to enter before the settlement of the Cyprus problem. "We discussed all these issues with Denktas, we expressed our views to him. We also informed him in detail about our views on the negotiations", Erel concluded.

Replying to the question on how Denktas reacted to his views Erel said that Denktas shares the same views with him. He also added that there is no concern between them.

[03] Talat: Life has been turned into a disaster in the occupied areas

In a written statement Mr Talat accused Turkey and the so-called "government" of the pseudostate of doing nothing to overcome this deadlock.

"The position, to which our economy has come, has been turned into a full disaster", said Mr Talat and added: "While the situation is this, neither Rauf Denktas nor the officials in Turkey who are responsible for this deadlock make any suggestions for ways to overcome the deadlock.While all these are happening speeches full of heroism are made in ceremonies like the recent 20 July celebrations. These speeches can neither fill the stomachs nor create ways of solving the problems."

Furthermore, Mr Talat repeated his opinion that the only way to solve the problems of the Turkish Cypriots is finding a solution to the Cyprus problem and the accession to the European Union.

[04] The pseudostate has 13 trillion Turkish liras deficit in six months

According to information given by the so-called "Ministry of Finance", during the above-mentioned period the revenues of the pseudostate were 298 trillion 20 billion 445 million 535 thousand and 943 liras, while the expenses reached the 311 trillion 377 billion 552 million 512 thousand and 619 liras.
