[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Extract on the Cyprus problem from the Feast of Sacrifices message by the Turkish Cypriot leaderIllegal Bayrak Radio 1 (22/2/02) broadcast the statement by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas on the occasion of the Feast of Sacrifices. The extract on the Cyprus problem is as follows: "Today, the struggle is being waged at the negotiation table. This struggle is at least as sacred, as difficult, and in need of self-sacrifice as the struggle you waged years ago. The goal and target is to build bridges of peace between the two peoples. To this end, both sides should respect and trust each other. We have to admit that there is a serious lack of confidence between us, and this is full of past memories. It is impossible to forget them. It is our duty, however, to build bridges of peace between us if possible. To this end, we have to do the necessary at the negotiation table by bearing in mind the future and the Cyprus we hope to see in the future and not by remembering the past. How do we envisage the future of Cyprus? What kind of a Cyprus do we want? You have already made a decision to this end when you established a state. Do you want to destroy this state? Do you have such an intention? Or, do you want peace and conciliation with the other side based on your state, under equal conditions, and on the basis of sovereignty? I believe that this and not following the Greek Cypriots as a minority will pave the path to joint EU membership. For this reason, our duty is difficult and will probably be long. We are doing everything possible in order to shorten this time. The other side will try to waste our time and will do everything to achieve its goal if it realizes and receives information to the effect that your patience has been exhausted and that you want peace and conciliation regardless of the cost. You are expected, therefore, to have trust in yourself, in unity, and in togetherness. In the spirit of holiday, you should embrace and forgive each other and unite in brotherhood. You should have faith in each other, in the motherland, and in the cause. The Islamic world is celebrating the Feast of Sacrifice throughout the world. There is a great atmosphere of unity and togetherness in the air. We should also take part in this atmosphere and feel the pride and tranquillity in the air. The motherland is also undergoing a difficult period. Despite all its difficulties, however, the motherland has done everything necessary so that we can celebrate our holiday on time. All the salaries have been paid on time and delegations are en route for investments. Consequently, we have to show to everyone that we hold on tight to the existence of the /Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus [TRNC]/ if we seek to be the happy and fortunate citizens of the /TRNC/." [02] Salih Cosar seizes the opportunity of the map published in the pro-Denktas paper to stress that Greek Cypriots will not be allowed to return to their homes and propertiesIllegal Bayrak Radio (22/2/02) broadcast that Salih Cosar, Democratic Party leader, and so-called state minister in charge of the economy and deputy prime minister, in a statement to illegal BRT on the occasion of the Feast of Sacrifice, said that it is a difficult holiday but that no one should be upset because of the existing problems and that they should be hopeful for the future. He continued: "There are ups and downs in every community. I believe that 2002 will be the year in which an end will be put to the two-year-old crisis."Commenting on the direct talks process, Cosar said that the sides have placed their positions on the table, adding that in the second phase the common denominator of the positions will be discussed. Referring to the map in which 24 percent of the island's territory is left to the Turkish Cypriots, an issue that has also been confirmed by Rauf Denktas, Cosar asked the people not to be upset, adding that a situation in which people from the south can return to their property is out of the question. Cosar said: "The freedom of movement is one thing and the right of property is another. Our people have relinquished their right to property to the /TRNC/ and our /state/, through its settlement policy, has granted our citizens the right to property in the north in exchange for their property in the south. It is out of the question for us to go back on our settlement policy. Nobody from the south can return to the north with a right to property." [03] Turkish Cypriots play volleyball in the church of the occupied Ayios Thodoros villagePillage of holly places continues unabated in the occupied areas of Cyprus. YENIDUZEN (25.2.02.) reports that the inhabitants of the occupied village of Ayios Theodoros, in Karpasia peninsula, use the church abandoned by the Greek Cypriot inhabitants of the village in 1974, to play volleyball. The journalist of YENIDUZEN, who has visited the village, reports that young people told him that they had restored the church and placed windows. "One of the villagers, who seems to believe that they have the right to play volleyball inside the church, says: 'We have restored the building and placed windows", writes the paper. According to YENIDUZEN the population of the village today is 450 inhabitants. [04] Threats against AFRIKA and Dervish ErogluAFRIKA (25.2.02) reports that an unknown person called yesterday the paper and threatened that he would place a bomb both in its printing house and at the residence of the so-called "Prime Minister" Dervish Eroglu.Noting that the terrorists got wilder after the demand of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) towards forming an investigation committee by the pseudo-"Assembly", AFRIKA writes, inter alia, the following: ".The terrorist who called yesterday said: 'I have placed the bomb in your printing house, but I pitied you. However, from now on I will not pity you'. The same terrorist threatened Prime Minister Eroglu as well: 'This time this Prime Minister, who does not say a word to you, will also be blown up'. .". [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS[05] Columnist in Radikal newspaper alleges that Turks from Turkey are laundering money in the free areas of CyprusColumnist Mine Kirikkanat writing in Radikal (23/02/02) under the title "Spying" says that Turkish citizens are laundering money in the free areas of Cyprus. In her commentary Kirikkanat, inter alia, says the following: '' During an interview I had taken from the Director of the OGD (Observatory of Geography of Narcotics-Tr.note: The abbreviation should be in French) Michel Koutouzis in Paris for Milliyet newspaper a few years ago, I had learned that the OGD which worked like an information gathering organisation, while tracing 'black money' it is not only interested in money coming from narcotics but in all kinds of illegal money sources of investment and income. At one point Koutouzis said to me:' Do you know that south Cyprus became rich because of your people?' 'Who are those people of ours?' I asked bewildered. 'The Turks' he said laughingly. ' It appears that the Greek Cypriot side, whose relations with Turkey and with the Turkish Cypriot side is broken, is full of Turkish shelf companies that deal with money laundering and the Greek Cypriot banks with Turkish off-shore companies' accounts. At this moment, among the names of these off-shore companies and account owners there are all the names that you think of and the names of those who have close relatives in the higher echelon of the Turkish state. That is, the Greek Cypriot side owes its prosperity and wealth to the Turks' And he told me that they have carried out the investigation in the Greek Cypriot side regarding the offshore and shelf companies on behalf of the EU Commission and they have submitted all the information and the list of the names to the Commission's Chairmanship. I was dead frozen. I have asked immediately the list. Of course he did not give it. However he gave me the names extempore. And I have taken down these names. My dear readers, since I have no written evidence in my hand I am unable to disclose but, let me describe you: One of them is the person who was arrested abroad, brought here and imprisoned for three months and then set free, who upon returning to his home town he was given a hero's welcome, as a saviour, the pudding face man with moustache. The important thing is not whether I know these names or not. A lot of Turkish journalists know these names as I do, but what is important is that the names of these usurpers, who before the public brand the Greek Cypriot side an enemy behind the scenes they help it to prosper. Their full name-list is with the European Commission as well as with the Greek Cypriots. At the time of the interview Michel Koutouzis did not allow me to disclose his name because the OGD was very active in Turkey during that period. Later on he had made statements to the public using his name and the name of OGD and subsequently the OGD was closed. Because it was a spying organisation where experts from all kinds of profession were working. It completed a certain mission and dissolved itself."
