The paper writes that PUM issued yesterday a statement declaring that even if the "law" is accepted, the party will not apply its provisions. According to the statement "the military regime in the northern part of Cyprus is trying to terrify and oppress the Turkish Cypriots with fascist laws".

According to "Halkin Sesi" (23.10.01) Turkey's Sports Minister, Fikret Unlu has said that the «embargoes» applied on the pseudostate by the international community are contrary to the human rights and added that in co-operation with the "officials" of the pseudostate they exert efforts to lift this embargo and pave the way for the athletes "citizens" of the so-called "TRNC" to participate in international sporting events and achieve the recognition of the "TRNC".

Talking yesterday at a press conference after a meeting with the so-called "sports minister", Ahmet Kasif, Mr Unlu noted that they wanted to find a solution to this problem within the framework of the international law.

Mr Unlu said also that soon the foundations of the so-called "TRNC" Olympic Home would be laid. Turkey will continue to help the pseudostate in the field of sports, he said, concluding that they will also be organizing joint sporting activities.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[06] Turkish Cypriot columnist writes that Turkey is exerting pressure for Cyprus

Aydin Olgun of "Vatan" (23.10.01) reports that Ankara is taking advantage of the situation in Afghanistan to exert pressure on the USA regarding Cyprus. In his commentary under the title "Ankara is exerting pressure for Cyprus", Mr Olgun writes, among other things, the following:

"Taking advantage of the recent events in Afghanistan, Ankara is exerting pressure for Cyprus. According to information leaked from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Motherland, Ankara is insistently defending her opinions and demands on the Cyprus issue especially before the USA. According to the same information, Ankara has taken from Washington the promise that sufficient support will be given to her on the issue of Cyprus in return of her military help on this issue (Afghanistan).

The recent political developments in the world and the fact that Turkey offered the USA the necessary support on the issue of terrorism caused great satisfaction in the USA. .According to the information leaked, in parallel with the issue of Cyprus, the USA is planning to relieve Turkey from some of her debts. Among the debts, which are thought to be written off are the five million dollars for military aid. .As far as the help on the Cyprus issue is concerned, this for now will be at least political support to Turkey before the European Union and Greece. However, while Turkey is waging a huge struggle against terrorism, the TRNC too has to do really a lot of things. It must inform the world that Clerides and Simitis are the basic supporters of terrorism and support the Motherland on this issue by undertaking a propaganda campaign."
