[01] Tansu Ciller visited occupied Cyprus

KIBRIS (13.10.01) reported that the True Path Party (TPP) leader Tansu Ciller arrived in the occupied areas of Cyprus on Friday.

Ciller will be presented with honorary doctorate by the illegal Kyrenia American University and address the first lecture of the university on its new academic year.

Tansu Ciller met separately with Rauf Denktas, and so-called Parliament speaker Vehbi Zeki Serter on Friday.

Rauf Denktas said that the fair solution will be found in the island by common efforts with Turkey, adding that ``if an issue is not solved for 38 years, it certainly has a reason.``

Denktas noted that the Cyprus question has to be diagnosed, a joint commission has to be set up and the equal right to speak have to be given to Turkish Cypriots.

Alleging that European Union (EU) and international law experts started to support their views, Denktas said that the pseudostate will insist on its views.

Denktas also stated that the EU tries to solve the Cyprus problem by issuing wrong reports and remarked that this further complicated the situation.

The so-called Parliament Speaker Vehbi Zeki Serter said that the Cyprus question is at a very critical stage, adding that the other side does not want peace.

Greek Cypriots have the title of fake Cyprus government and they don`t represent Turkish Cypriots, Serter said, alleging that Greek Cypriots launched efforts to reach Enosis with Greece, adding that the economic difficulties of the Turkish Cypriots will be overcome by the support of Turkey.

Serter said that they want a peace which is based on a separate sovereignty and political equality, adding that they will never give up Turkey`s guarantee. He alleged that the peace in the island today stems from the invasion of Turkish Armed Forces in 1974.

Tansu Ciller said in her part that Cyprus has to be reassessed by the world which is under reconstruction due to the ongoing fight against terrorism.

``It will be seen that the real human right is the right to life. All the world is mobilized to protect this right to life. All countries which are with terrorists and which abet terrorism are in the same status,`` she said.

Ciller noted that she is uneasy about the Poos report, adding that the world will understand the fact that the pseudostates does not extend support to terrorism, on the contrary it defends the right to defend itself against terrorism.

Calling on the Turkish Cypriots Ciller said that they should not be hopeless due to the difficulties as the cooperation agreements between Turkey and the pseudostate will open the way to a solution.

[02] Huseyin Angolemli is the 4th Chairman of the CLP

Huseyin Angolemli was elected yesterday Chairman of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) at the party's 18th General Assembly, which took place in the occupied part of Nicosia, reports "Ortam" (15.10.01), adding that Mr. Angolemli was the only candidate as Mustafa Akinci, who has been the leader of CLP for 14 years, did not run for the office.

Speaking after his election, Mr. Angolemli said that this was a very difficult period and noted that good organization was a precondition for overcoming the problems.

Meanwhile, in his two hours-long speech, Mr. Akinci said that when CLP had been participating in the so-called "coalition government" they exerted efforts towards preserving the "personality and independence" of the pseudostate.

Mr. Akinci reminded that CLP tried to bind the so-called "police" and "fire brigade" to a civilian authority, to bring Turkish Cypriots to the administration of institutions such as the illegal Turkish Cypriot Airlines and the so-called Central Bank. "In brief we have tried to keep on the agenda the necessity of the Turkish Cypriots` having a word in their own institutions", he added.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Mr. Akinci repeated his party's position for finding a solution based on two «states» in Cyprus with one international identity. He also expressed the opinion that Cyprus should join the European Union after the solution of the Cyprus problem. Furthermore, Mr. Akinci argued that the negotiations towards finding a solution to the Cyprus problem must resume as soon as possible without preconditions.

Meanwhile, finding a solution to the Cyprus problem is characterized "more urgent than ever" in the decisions of the Party Assembly. According to the decision the solution has become a necessity because of the destruction caused by the deep economic crisis in Turkey and the pseudostate and the fact that there is "a serious possibility" for the Greek Cypriots to join the EU in two years` time.

In the decision it is also noted that if Cyprus becomes a member of the EU before the solution, then the division in the island will become deeper, the relations between Greece and Turkey will deteriorate and the Turkish Cypriots "will come face to face with the biggest emigration phenomenon in their history". Furthermore, CLP expresses the opinion that it would be wrong if Turkey kept Northern Cyprus out of the EU and made it her province, because this would cause nothing but problems for the pseudostate and Turkey.

[03] 622 illegal workers were found in the occupied areas in July

The so-called "Labour Department" of the pseudostate has announced that during July 622 illegal workers were found in the occupied areas of Cyprus, reports "KIBRIS" (14.10.01), adding that the 621 of these people came from Turkey.

Irfan Yagli, so-called director of the "Department" has said that a fine of about 128 billion and 240 million Turkish liras was collected from employers who employed people illegally. According to Mr. Yagli the amount of the fines reached 14.5 billion liras in July.

Mr. Yagli noted that 90 % of the illegal workers enter the pseudostate by showing only their identity cards.

[04] Talat the only candidate for the leadership of RTP

Mehmet Ali Talat is the only candidate for the leadership of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) at the party's "Existence Assembly", which is to take place on Sunday, 21 October in the occupied part of Nicosia, reports "KIBRIS" (14.10.01), adding that 62 persons have run for the other 45 positions of the party council.

The paper writes that RTP has formed the positions, which are to be approved at the Assembly.

[05] Dev-Is protests about the "economic package" in occupied Kyrenia

"KIBRIS" (13.10.01) reports that employees of the so-called Kyrenia "Municipality" members of the trade union "Revolutionary Genel - Is", which is a member of Dev - Is, organized on Friday a protest march against the recently announced "economic package".

The paper writes that about 130 people participated in the protest, which was led by Ali Gulle, president of the Dev-Is Federation and Mehmet Seyis, president of Genel-Is.

Speaking to the participants in the protest, Mr. Seyis said that the "package" had been prepared to eliminate the Turkish Cypriots and stressed that they demanded measures towards increasing the production and the solution of the Cyprus problem.

The participants in the protest were shouting slogans like "The package is an insult to all of us", there is a rise on everything but the salaries and "There are increases and oppression, how could we love you?".

[06] Citrus produce on the verge of collapse

KIBRIS (13.10.01) in its front page under the banner headline «The yellow gold became black» reports that the citrus fruit orchards in the occupied area have been destroyed.

It says that the citrus produce, which is one of the foundation stones of the occupied area/s economy is on the verge of collapse. It is going through its darkest days at present.

The paper reports that farmers leave the orchards to die because they are not economically viable anymore. The total area of the citrus orchards was 75 thousand donums, and now this figure dropped to 30 thousand.

The report goes on to say that according to international standards, the yield is 11 tones of citrus per donum while this yield in the occupied area is 3 tones per donum.

The chairman of the citrus producers in the occupied area, Izzet Kombos warned that soon they will start to take dynamic actions.

Meanwhile Basaran Duzgun in an article in KIBRIS (15.10.01) «The Drama of Morphou» refers to the problems facing the occupied Morphou area, which was a major citrus producing region.

He gives statistical information regarding citrus production in the area and says that once a flourishing community, the Morphou area today faces serious economic problems, and as a result of this it has the highest rate of emigration.

Basaran Duzgun says that in the past people in the Morphou area enjoyed an income average that was higher, compared to the income average of other parts of the occupied areas. He further says that according to a poll carried out in the occupied area, the highest number of people who favoured, «territorial concessions if a solution will be reached» came from Morphou region.
