[01] Turkey's Cakmakoglu: Cyprus Issue Can Be Solved With Recognition of Two States

KIBRIS (28.9.01) reports that the Turkish National Defense Minister Sabahattin Cakmakoglu repeated on Thursday that problems in Cyprus will be solved when the principle of two separate communities, states and sovereignties is accepted.

Cakmakoglu who visited the International Defence Industry, Aviation and Maritime Fair (IDEF 2001) had a meeting with the so-called Foreign and Defense Minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu, who is participating at the Fair.

During the meeting, Ertugruloglu said the pseudostate was under Turkey`s guarantee and that lack of solution in the island stemmed from the international community.

Noting that the international community expected the pseudostate to give up its characteristic of being a «state», Ertugruloglu said, ``it is an expectation which will never happen.``

Cakmakoglu said that Cyprus had strategic importance for Turkey in regard to its security as it was an island in Northern Mediterranean.

Cakmakoglu stressed that Turkey was determined to follow the policy of respect for the unsolved and postponed rights of the pseudostate.

``If a policy which accepts the Greek Cypriot side as the ruler of the whole of Cyprus is still valid, it eliminates the chance for a solution. First of all, this mistake should be corrected. The issue will be immediately solved when the principle of two states, communities and sovereignties in the island is accepted,`` Cakmakoglu said.

Responding to a question, Cakmakoglu said that the U.N. Security Council took ``wrong`` decisions about the Cyprus issue and that its latest decision did not mean anything for him.

[02] The so-called pseudo-Assembly speaker returns from OIC meeting in Morocco

According to KIBRIS (28.9.01), the so-called pseudo-Assembly Speaker Ertugrul Hasipoglu who attended the parliamentary union meeting of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Morocco, returned to the occupied areas on Thursday night.

In a statement to the illegal BRT at the occupied Tymbou airport, Hasipoglu commented on his contacts in Morocco. Recalling that the pseudostate applied for membership in the parliamentary union of the OIC, Hasipoglu said that the matter was discussed with the assistant secretary general during a previous meeting in Jakarta and the official's approval was sought. The application was submitted on behalf of the pseudo-Assembly and the reply was given in the name of the «TRNC legislative assembly», Hasipoglu alleged and added: «This response had heartened us; however, when we went there we encountered different attitudes. Unfortunately, they informed us that they cannot accept us as the TRNC».

    [03] Denktas to visit Ankara

KIBRIS (28.09.01) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas, accompanied by the so-called Defence and Foreign Affairs «Minister», Tahsin Ertugruloglu, will go today to Ankara, where he is to participate in a working dinner with the President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and the Chief of Staff General Huseyin Kivrikoglu.

Tomorrow Mr Denktas will speak at a conference organized by the «Foundation 2000» at Ankara's Hilton Hotel and on Monday he will attend a ceremony at the Kirikkale University where he will be given a honorary doctorate degree. Mr Denktas is expected to return to the occupied areas on Monday night.

Meanwhile, «Avrupa» refers to Denktas` visit to Turkey under the front - page title «Surprising summit meeting in Ankara».

[04] Reactions on the new economic package

Weekly «Yeni Cag» reports that the Patriotic Union Movement (PUM) has expressed the view that the economic package announced the day before is dictated to the pseudogovernment by Ankara and aims at further depressing the «people».

In a written statement issued yesterday, PUM notes that the new measures will make living in the occupied areas unbearable and increase unemployment and emigration.

PUM underlines that the way out from the crisis is «a federal solution to the Cyprus problem based on Cyprus` independence and territorial integrity».

Meanwhile, KIBRIS (28.09.01) writes that Zorlu Tore, leader of the Nationalist Justice Party (NJP), said at a Press conference yesterday that «the economic package has absolutely no difference from the previous one» and added that the «people» will be depressed even more.

Mr Tore expressed the opinion that those who are responsible for the current situation of the pseudostate are «those who are in power for 30 years».

Furthermore, representatives of the trade unions of the Turkish Cypriot Secondary School Teachers (KTOEOS), the so -called «Public» Servants Trade Union (KAMU - SEN) and the Revolutionary Workers Trade Union Federation (DEV - IS) met yesterday and discussed the new economic package.

After the meeting, Ahmet Barcin, President of the KTOEOS criticized the fact that the measures of the package were discussed with no one and that the package «was announced unilaterally».

Ali Gulle, President of DEV - IS, said that his trade union will strongly react against the package and added that within the next few days they will enforce «any kind of action, including strikes».

[05] Reactions about the bi-communal activities and the article of «The Guardian»

«Birlik» (28.09.01) reports that the National Unity Party (NUP) and the Platform for Struggling for the National Cause (PSNC) have strongly criticized the bi-communnal activities in Pyla village and the article published recently in the British newspaper «The Guardian» under the title «Northern Cypriots turn against Turkey».

In a written statement issued yesterday, NUP characterizes «treason» the fact that the participants in last Sunday's meeting in Pyla observed a minute's silence in the memory of both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot victims of the conflicts in Cyprus.

«Observing a minute's silence in the memory of the criminals of EOKA is a treason», according to NUP, adding that it will fight with all its power and «within the framework of the law» against those who «attack Turkey and the Turkish Armed Forces». Furthermore, NUP argues that the opinions expressed by the Turkish Cypriot party and trade union leaders to Mrs Helena Smith of «The Guardian» are «causing harm to the Turkish Cypriots» and «they are definitely not the views of the Turkish Cypriots».

Meanwhile, in a written statement issued yesterday the PSNC claims that the bi-communal meetings are «an organ in the hands of the foreign powers» and their goal is well known to the «people».

PSNC calls also on the so - called «authorities» of the pseudostate to «fulfill their duty» and take measures against those who participate in the bi-communall activities and talked against Turkey to «The Gaurdian».

PSNC consists of the Association of the so - called Turkish Cypriot Fighters, the Association of the «Martyrs» and their families, the Association of the «Fighters» of the so - called «Turkish Peace - keeping» Forces, the Association of the Retired «Police» Officers, the Retired Non-Commissioned Officers of the so - called «Security Forces» and the Association of the «Fighters» in the battles of Kokkina village.

[06] The leader of Republican Turkish Party criticises Denktas

According to KIBRIS (28/9/01) the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP) Mehmet Ali Talat has criticised the recent statements made by the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas regarding an article published in the British newspaper "The Guardian" on 25 September under the title "Northern Cypriots turn against Turkey". Talat called on Denktas not insult the people, to abandon his secessionist policy and to restrain the organisations that support him.

Talat said, "In nowhere in the world under the leadership of the president's advisor there is a non- governmental organisation (NGO), if this happens then this regime can only be a dictatorship".

[07] US Embassy called on her citizens who live in the occupied areas to renew their personal information

KIBRIS (28/9/01) reports that US Embassy in Cyprus has asked the US citizens, living in the occupied areas to fill new forms in order to update their personal information, so that in an emergency situation to be easily located.

[08] The so-called Tourism and Environment Minister went to Istanbul

KIBRIS (28/9/01) reports that the so-called Tourism and Environment Minister Serdar Denktas went to Istanbul as the guest of the Union of the Turkish Tourist Hotel Owners and Operators (TTHOO). Denktas delivered a speech in the general meeting of TTHOO, where he stressed that the occupied areas and Turkey can be a joint tourism centre in the region.

Denktas will return to the occupied areas today.

[09] The occupation regime tries to export its products to third countries

According to KIBRIS (28/9/01) reports that an economic delegation of the pseudo-state, headed by the so-called undersecretary for state minister and prime responsible for the economic affairs and Deputy Prime Minister's office, Ahmet Aker and representatives form the Turkish Cypriot Chambers of Commerce and Trade, went yesterday to Ankara in order to hold series of meetings with officials in Turkey.

Aker said that they will discuss, how the products produced in the occupied areas will be circulated free in Turkey's market and how they will be exported to third countries through Turkey. It is expected the delegation will return to the occupied areas after the completion of their contacts.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[10] Turkish Cypriot columnist fears of possible increase of the number of the Turkish Cypriots who speak against Turkey and asks their punishment

In his comment under the title «Where is the world and where are we?», Erten Kasimoglu of «Vatan» (28.09.01) expresses the opinion that those who speak against Turkey like the Turkish Cypriot party and trade union leaders who gave an interview to the British newspaper «The Guardian» must be punished. Otherwise, he adds, their number will increase. Mr Kasimoglu writes, among other things, the following:

«...Yesterday, in the press a lot of citizens expressed their angry reaction against these statements and characterized those three politicians `ungrateful cats`. Denktas too reacted by saying that `one must be crazy for the asylum to say these words`. Yesterday, however, some non-governmental organizations called on the authorities to do their duty and punish this crime committed against the state. That is, the people expect the authorities to punish these crimes committed against the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkey and the Turkish Armed Forces...Otherwise, the streets in the TRNC will become impassable because of the people who are crazy for the asylum !!!».
