[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkish Assembly Speaker arrives to the occupied areasAccording to Anatolia Agency (19.9.01) the Turkish Parliament Chairman Omer Izgi accompanied by a delegation, came to the occupied areas yesterday.Speaking at the occupied airport of Tymbou, Izgi said that «the TRNC was an independent and a sovereign state and cohabitation of Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Cyprus was not possible». Izgi said that Turkey supported the confederation offer of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas and rejected other propositions. Referring to the European Parliament`s recent decision on Cyprus, Izgi said such decisions were making the solution more difficult. Speaking about the news that appeared in a number of newspapers which said that Saudi terrorist Osama bin Ladin/s brother was money laundering in the free area of Cyprus Izgi said he only read this in the papers and it was not right to declare the Cyprus Government as a country supporting terrorism without investigating the matter. Izgi later visited the tomb of Dr. Fazil Kucuk at Anittepe and laid a wreath. [02] Cem hosts luncheon for EU Envoys; attacks on US, ties With EU, Cyprus discussedAnatolia Agency (19.9.01) reported that Turkey-European Union (EU) relations and international developments were debated during the luncheon hosted by Foreign Minister Ismail Cem in honour of the EU countries` ambassadors on Wednesday.Diplomatic sources said that the latest situation of Turkey-EU relations and the Progress Report to be unveiled in November were also on the agenda of the luncheon. While Ankara touched on the requirement that positive elements should also be included in the Progress Report, it also reiterated its views about start of the screening process between Turkey and the EU. Ankara also noted that more initiatives should be exerted on European Security and Defence Identity. Cyprus was another issue which was discussed at the luncheon. Diplomatic sources said that Turkey expressed its views about recent developments in Cyprus in detail. [03] The depositors of the bankrupt banks are getting ready to actAccording to KIBRIS (20.09.01), the Association of the Depositors of the Bankrupt Banks announced yesterday that they are preparing to organise a massive «shock act», in order to express their protest for the fact that the pseudo-government has not solved their problems.Talking at a press conference in occupied Nicosia, the president of the Association, Meting Aaron said that the depositors have given enough time to the National Unity Party (NUP) - Democratic Party (DP) pseudo-government to solve their problems, but the only thing they got are promises which have not been realised. Mr Aaron criticised the so-called «Prime Minister», Derives Regale for refusing to meet the depositors despite the fact that they asked a meeting with him six months ago and underlined that the only thing they get from the pseudo-government are promises. Furthermore, the General Secretary of the Association, Gunner Caking said that the depositors demand solution of their problems within 2002, adding that they are determined to struggle in order to achieve that goal. Meanwhile, the depositors of the PEYAK co-operative bank are to organise tomorrow a protest meeting in front of the office of the so-called «Prime Minister». According to «Avrupa» (20.09.01) the pseudo-government has to return the amount of about 85 million US dollars to the 20 thousand depositors of the six banks which went bankrupt two years ago in the occupied areas. [04] Denktas says Cyprus is very important for Turkey`s securityAccording to KIBRIS (20.09.01), the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktas has said that Cyprus is very important for Turkey`s security and added that if the case of Cyprus is lost «Turkey will no more be a country open to the seas».Talking on «The Past, the Present and the Future of Cyprus» at the Theatre Hall of the Municipality of the south-eastern province of Gaziantep in Turkey, Mr Denktas noted that Turkey will not allow Cyprus to become «a Greek dagger in the heart of Anatolia». «We cannot retreat in this national case. If we do this, it would mean that we betrayed our martyrs and invited the Turkish Cypriots to evacuate the island, as it had happened in Crete», supported Mr Denktas. Meanwhile, the Turkish Cypriot leader returned last night to the occupied areas. At the illegal Tymbou airport he claimed that every Turk should know that «the Cyprus problem is alive» and that «the struggle of Cyprus is a hard struggle». [05] A British couple made a donation to the Rehabilitation Centre of KyreniaAccording to KIBRIS (20.9.01) the British couple Susan and John Sykes made a donation, two wheelchairs, to the Rehabilitation Centre of Kyrenia.
