[01] Denktas back from visits to Zurich and Salzburg

In a statement at occupied Tymbou airport, Denktas said that the talks he held with Guenther Verheugen, EU commissioner in charge of enlargement, and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan were beneficial, adding: «They learned many things they did not know before, and we, in turn, learned that much of the propaganda conducted by the Greek Cypriots in their favour is not valid».

Referring to the shuttle diplomacy launched in Cyprus yesterday by Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary-General's special representative in Cyprus, Denktas reiterated that this is aimed at revealing if the necessary ground exists for the resumption of the talks.

Denktas noted that a decision will be reached after he assesses his contacts in Salzburg and Zurich and the talks he will conduct with de Soto together with the «government», the political parties, and if necessary with motherland Turkey. In reply to a question, Denktas alleged that the Greek Cypriots are acting on the basis of the belief that they can take Cyprus because of their title of the Cyprus Government. «The Greek Cypriots did not attempt to attain a solution before or after 1974 because of this belief», Denktas said.

Denktas further alleged that the Greek Cypriots' insistence in this regard and their continuation to arm themselves, to impose embargoes on the Turkish Cypriots, and to conduct false propaganda demonstrates their unwillingness to enter a partnership with the Turkish Cypriot side. «If this partnership is rejected», Denktas stressed, «the states that have been existing side by side for 28 years can perpetuate this situation for much longer». Reiterating that the path to unification passes through the acceptance of partnership, equality, equal status for the two partners, and the fact that one side does not have the right to establish hegemony over the other, Denktas went on: «As it stands, they are violating all these principles. What we must explain to the world is that the Greek Cypriots do not want a partnership, as they themselves have affirmed.

The Greek Cypriots' assertion that the Cyprus problem can be solved with Kyrenia and the return of the refugees to their homes is a manifestation of their unwillingness to reach a conciliation with the Turkish Cypriot side». Denktas noted that the problem can be solved if the sides accept that a partnership has been destroyed, that the two partners are still equal, and that the future partnership will also have equal sides. Denktas also underlined the need for the Greek Cypriot side to accept that according to the agreements signed between the sides, in a future partnership both peoples will live in their own regions, and now in their own «states». «Later, these two states or sides can reach an agreement on the conditions under which Cyprus is to be represented in the EU or the United Nations», Denktas added.

Denktas went on to say that the Greek Cypriots' tactics of taking possession of Cyprus by means of false policies will eventually work to their disadvantage. He added that during his contacts he saw that everyone is aware of the facts. Calling for internal unity in order to explain these known and visible facts to the world, Denktas said: «This is not tantamount to renouncing democracy. The facts are evident. Let us announce these facts to the world together. Let us not issue wrong messages to the world for the sake of internal propaganda and mutual accusations. It is a pity to do that».

«Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas said he and European Union officials on Monday looked into ways of setting up a "direct dialogue" between the bloc and his breakaway state let in northern Cyprus.

Denktas met EU Enlargement Commissioner Guenther Verheugen in Zurich en route to Salzburg, Austria, where he is due to meet U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Tuesday.

U.N.-brokered peace talks between Denktas and Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides stalled in January after the Turkish Cypriot leader demanded he be treated as Clerides's equal.

International efforts to resolve the decades-long stalemate have gained urgency as Cyprus's bid to join the EU edges closer.

"Meeting at such length and in such detail for the first time with EU representatives gave us satisfaction," Denktas was quoted as saying by Turkey's state-run Anatolian news agency.

Denktas said he and Verheugen had agreed to meet again to discuss establishing a "direct dialogue".

Turkey, also an EU candidate, backs Denktas' opposition to Greek side of Cyprus's EU application, which he argues does not take into account Turkish Cypriot demands. "The Turkish Cypriot side expressed in a sincere and open way the difficulty it faces with the Greek Cypriot side's EU bid and the recognition (given to) the Cypriot government as the legitimate government," Denktas said. Denktas has said reunification should be a loose confederation between two states, while Greek Cypriots want the two sides reunited under a federal umbrella».

[03] Cyprus Research Center founded at Ankara University

The Center aims at carrying out scientific researches on political, economic, social and cultural issues in the island and contributing to the development of a view about the future of the island.

The regulation of the Ankara University`s Cyprus Research and Practice Center was issued in the Official Gazette on Wednesday.

In accordance with the regulation, the Center will carry out scientific researches on the issues and problems which have occurred and may occur in political, economic, social and cultural fields in the island.

The Center will contribute to the development of a view about the future of the island by clarifying how the status quo in the island is perceived by international platforms and how the foreign policies of both regional and other countries affect the status quo.

The Center will organize scientific meetings like conferences, seminars and panel discussions in which experts will participate to help formation of a ground to discuss the place and importance of the island in Turkish foreign policy. The Center will encourage the lecturers to attend national and international meetings and prepare reports, bulletins, magazines, books and other publications to ensure that people learn about scientific and technical activities.

[04] Serdar Denktas to Izmir International Fair

Invoking information from the illegal TAK news agency, the paper notes that Mr Denktas will go to Izmir on Monday.

[05] The occupation regime prevents a Greek Cypriot journalist from crossing to the occupied areas and receiving a «Kutlu Adali Award»

The awards are granted every year by three press organisations and the «Kutlu Adali Foundation». The ceremony is to take place tomorrow evening at the «Youth Centre» in occupied Nicosia.

Basin - Sen issued a statement yesterday criticizing the so-called Ministry and characterizing its decision «anachronistic and arbitrary».

[06] Sener Levent acquitted from four charges about the Dikomo case

Mr Levent had strongly criticized the fact that the occupation army forced a Turkish Cypriot family to abandon the house they lived in, in order to use it for military purposes.

Mr Saadetoglu said that in the articles there was nothing that could be considered a crime. «Avrupa» reports that during the trials Mr Levent defended himself without using the right of having an advocate.
