[A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] The Turkish Cypriot leader asked for clarifications from the UN regarding the resumption of talks on Cyprus

Denktas/ office released the following statement after Wlosowicz/s meeting: «Zbigniew Wlosowicz has confirmed that there exists no other programme than the meeting of the UN Secretary-General with Mr Denktas in Salzburg and the UN Secretary-General/s Special Representative Alvaro de Soto/s contacts in Cyprus. Apart from this there is no other programme. For this reason it is not possible to give information to the Greek Cypriot press.

Any meeting other than the contacts to be held by de Soto in Cyprus between 30 August - 5 September, will be decided at the end of the contacts that Mr Denktas will have with the UN Secretary-General».

[02] Denktas angry over news reports on proximity talks

Denktas, who met a delegation of the «Struggle Platform for National Target», said that the Greek Cypriot media organizations published and transmitted news that proximity talks would start and that U.S. diplomats said that there were such scenarios.

«We were not told about this. We either exist or not. If we exist, we exist with our status, rights and a situation which is the result of our struggle. We will not make others ignore our pride. We always say these and will continue to do so. There are some claims that talks will resume on September 5, or 9, or 13 and or 17 without our being informed. Which meeting will start, when will it start, where will it start, and why will it start? I am going to discuss all these with the United Nations Secretary-General. After I meet him, the decision will be taken. I will not decide by myself. I will come and take a decision together with our government. If necessary, I will consult with Turkey and decide. There is an impression that we will follow them if they start to walk. But, they will see that we will not go, `` Denktas said.

Denktas said that he is very sincere when he is saying all these and added: ``We are equal. We do not want to dominate them. We want a situation in which they do not dominate us either. ``

Denktas stated that the U.N Security Council should once more reconsider the Cyprus problem.

«The Greek Cypriots try to exclude the Cyprus question from the good offices mission of the U.N. Secretary-General or the Security Council and carry it to the European Union (EU), of which Turkey is not a member», Denktas said.

Denktas said that the world could not understand that the Turkish Cypriots are silent because they have confidence in themselves and Turkey. ``In all reports, claims are published as if the Turkish Cypriots are against Turkey and Denktas, and there is a separation because Turkey and Denktas are trying to impose some things by force that the nation does not want, `` Denktas said.

Denktas added: ``We know that a few people, whom we define as a handful minority, do these because they get money from the other side. They want to serve the aspirations of the Greek Cypriots. ``

[03] Turkish Delegation under Faruk Logoglu is having contacts in the occupied areas

Responding to questions of journalists at occupied Tymbou Airport, Logoglu said that they would determine a joint approach together with the Turkish Cypriot side about the upcoming meeting.

Underlining that Turkey and the occupation regime were in full harmony, Logoglu stressed that they would not allow any development that was contrary to common benefits.

Calling on the Greek Cypriot side, Logoglu said: ``If the Greek Cypriots concentrate on the Cyprus question instead of the European Union (EU) membership, progress can be scored in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem».

The Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, met Logoglu on Thursday.

Speaking at the meeting, Denktas said: ``I hope that the United Nations-Secretary General Annan, and his Special Representative to Cyprus Alvaro de Soto were not forced to think that I would meet with them to act in their scenario. ``

Recalling that there were some news reports in the Greek Cypriot press claiming that Annan sent a letter to President Glafcos Clerides and said that negotiations would start on September 15, 17 or 19, Denktas said: ``I am deeply sorry about such reports. This situation shows that we were not taken seriously. We considered these reports as Greek Cypriots` objective to take steps to solve the Cyprus question by disregarding Turkey. ``

Meanwhile, Denktas congratulated Logoglu who has been appointed as new Turkish Ambassador to the U.S.

Faruk Logoglu said: ``We are not uneasy about the Cyprus issue. We want Denktas to be at easy too. Denktas` contacts should focus on whether there is an appropriate ground for negotiations. ``

Logoglu said that if there was a ground, further steps could be taken.

The pseudostate/s so-called Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu met Faruk Logoglu yesterday as well.

Eroglu said that the visit of a delegation from Turkey`s Foreign Ministry prior to a meeting between Rauf Denktas and United Nations (U.N) Secretary-General Kofi Annan is ``meaningful and important//.

All the members of the delegation are experienced on the Cyprus question, Eroglu noted, and said: ``Your being in our country prior to an important meeting will convey important messages to interested parties».

Eroglu stated that the «government» has decided to work together with Turkey regarding the Cyprus question.

Logoglu in his part said that their visit aims at showing that Turkey extends full support to the Turkish Cypriots and that it is in solidarity with Cyprus regarding the «national cause».

Some developments may occur in the Cyprus question in coming days, Logoglu noted.

Logoglu said that the two «countries» will continue to cooperate in the «national cause», adding that their visit serves this aim.

[04] National Teachers/ Movement established under NPM in occupied Cyprus

A written statement was issued by Salih Avci, coordinator on behalf of the NTM, recounting the goals of the movement. Avci's statement said: «The objectives of the NTM will consist of restructuring the education system on the basis of a national concept, solving the problems encountered by our schools and teachers, overcoming the economic difficulties experienced by the people, lifting customs duties after effecting an economic integration with motherland Turkey, opposing improprieties, separatism, partisanship, political pressure, and corruption».

Avci declared that the movement is determined to struggle against the collaborators of foreign forces.

[05] NPM criticizes the efforts of the left to unite their forces

In a press release with the title «Communique No. 12», NPM claims that the protest rally being organized on 28 August, the day the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, will meet the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, is geared towards putting Mr Denktas in a difficult situation, at weakening his bargaining power, his confidence and his power to resist.

The communique of NPM concludes: «In addition to being a stab in the back of Denktas at every critical stage, with this kind of activities, they have made it a habit of exploiting the economic difficulties, taking the people into the streets against the `state/ and crashing the `TRNC/ and turning it into a minority of the Greeks».

[06] Turkey's Minister of Tourism will visit the occupied areas

The Turkish Minister will be accompanied during his visit by the Chairman of Turkey's Travel Agencies Union Basaran Ulusoy and representatives of travel agencies.
