[01] «This Country is Ours Platform» to organize a rally

YENIDUZEN (21.8.01) publishes a full page announcement by the Platform «This Country is Ours» calling on Turkish Cypriots to attend the rally and march it plans to organize on 28 August, the day the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, will meet the UN Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, in Salzburg, Austria.

The gathering under the title «March Towards Peace Rally» will be held at Inonu Square on Tuesday 28 August at 8 p.m.

The marchers will gather in front of PEYAK building in occupied Nicosia at 7 p.m. and walk to Inonu Square at 7:30 p.m.

The announcement calls on Turkish Cypriots to participate in the march stressing that the future is in peace, in a bizonal, bicommunal federal solution under political equality and accession to the EU with the solution of the Cyprus problem.

[02] The economy of the pseudostate is on Turkey/s agenda

KIBRIS (21.8.01) reports that the economy of the pseudostate will be on the agenda during meetings in Ankara between 22-24 August.

A delegation consisting of so-called Ministry Under-Secretaries is leaving for Ankara today in order to discuss with Turkish officials ways of securing economic stability in the occupied areas.

To this effect a meeting was held yesterday under the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktas, and the so-called Prime Minister, Mr. Dervish Eroglu with the participation of so-called ministers. The so-called ambassador of Turkey to the occupied areas, Mr Hayati Guven, also attended the meeting.

In reply to a question after the meeting the so-called Minister of Finance, Mr Mehmet Bayram, said the meeting was held in view of the Ankara discussions on the economic stability in the pseudostate.

The paper writes that the meeting in occupied Nicosia was carried out with great secrecy and the press was not allowed to cover it.

«According to information from reliable sources `President/ Denktas was briefed by the competent `ministers/ on the ways of stabiilzing the economy and the austerity measures taken», writes KIBRIS.

[03] Animal breeders in the occupied areas worried with falling meat prices in the free areas

KIBRIS (21.8.01) reports under banner headlines that animal breeders in the occupied area are in panic because of the drop in meat prices in the free areas especially lamb, veal and beef. As a result of the drop in price, animal breeders in the occupied area fear that smuggling will start from the free areas to the occupied area and thus they will further increase the already existing economic problems of the animal breeders who are going through a difficult period.

The so-called Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the pseudostate Irsen Kucuk said that he was informed about the price decreases in the free areas and that they are about to take the necessary measures.

He said that no information reached him that smuggling is going on recently.

The chairman of the Animal Breeders Union, Ali Osman Can said: «South Cyprus is using the TRNC as a major market. Our government should immediately see to it and come up with a solution». He said that if smuggling takes place it will be the end of the animal breeders.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[04] The Cyprus problem on the world agenda soon

Sedat Sertoglu writing in SABAH (20.8.01) under the title «Cyprus is coming» says that the Cyprus problem will soon be on the world agenda.

The full text of the article is as follows: «Soon, only a short time is left and the Cyprus problem will be on the world agenda. Soon it will stand up before us with all its grandeur.

Let us see what we shall do to convince everybody that we are right, which plan shall we apply? Will it be plan A or plan B, or shall we draw a new plan and call it plan C and shall we sit around the negotiating table with this plan?

Certain people in Ankara are unaware what the non-solution of the Cyprus problem means for Turkey, and what kind of trouble it will create for Turkey. Or they are aware of it but pretend not to know.

Of course those, who for years exploited the situation created in Cyprus and mass up their wealth, want continuation of this situation. They want this situation to be continued, and if possible the TRNC should integrate with Turkey so that they can eat, plunder and usurp more.

For them it has no meaning at all if Turkey is in trouble in the international arena. They do not care the threat that will be posed in front of Turkey if the Greek Cypriots enter the EU alone. Certain people are in a festive mood, unaware of the fact that if the Greek Cypriots/ EU membership is realized the EU door might be closed completely. (Tr. Note: before Turkey).

In fact Turkey could have solved this issue years ago. It was a matter of a little courage, a little vision and a little bit of insight to see the future. What Turkey needs today is that people should enter into politics «who are able to see things beyond the horizon».

But these people are afraid of entering into the political orbit in Ankara which works very strangely. Even if they are not afraid their relatives and their immediate circle are preventing them from doing so.

It is impossible not to be afraid if one evaluates and assesses the parameters of the politics practised in Ankara. However, one has to come out of this «horror tunnel». Unless people who are able to see beyond the horizon enter into politics and come out of this horror tunnel, years will continue to pass by with sighs and laments.

To run away from the negotiating table did not secure any benefit neither to us nor to the TRNC.

Come on give up to be obstinate.

Bring forward reasonable thesis and put it before the UN Secretary-General. Discuss. Debate. But for God/s sake, take serious steps.

However, there is one thing that Ankara does not know. In diplomacy the logic «I win, you lose» exists no more. The logic «we both win» exists. If this logic is adopted by both interlocutors around the negotiating table and steps are taken towards that direction and reciprocal concessions are made, only then can they meet at a point.

If the Greek Cypriots, who consider the EU membership a `bird in hand/, push the things uphill and if we can explain this to the EU and convince the people, then we can make the Greek Cypriots to be disillusioned. And this is not that much difficult.

In fact friends of mine at the Foreign Ministry (Turkish FM) told me: `Some EU members openly say that they do not favour the Greek Cypriots/ EU membership before settling the Cyprus problem. However, they are afraid of Greece/s veto regarding other candidate countries/ membership/.

This stance (by Greece) is a chance for us, if of course we succeed in explaining this. At least let us do this».
