[01] Denktash searches for the support of the Turkish Cypriot political parties on the Cyprus problem

Halkin Sesi (17.8.01), reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash will hold today separate meetings at his office with delegations of the five Turkish Cypriot political parties which are represented in the so-called «parliament». During the meetings, the latest developments on the Cyprus problem are expected to be discussed, according to the paper.

Avrupa (17.8.01) writes that Mr Denktash will ask from the parties to accept the official Turkish view on the Cyprus problem and to express their support for the solution of confederation.

While for the National Unity Party (NUP), the Democratic Party (DP) and the National Justice Party (NJP) there is no problem to express their support for the official policy, notes Avrupa, it is interesting to see what the attitude of the Turkish Republican Party (TRP) and the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) will be.

[02] New commander of the Turkish occupation army has arrived

Yeniduzen (17.8.01), reports that lieutenant general Ahmet Ozteker, who has been appointed new commander of the Turkish occupation army in Cyprus in the place of lieutenant general Sukru Sariisik, arrived yesterday in the pseudostate.

Lieutenant general Ahmet Ozteker came to Cyprus with major general Cahit Sarsilmaz, new commander of 39th Division and brigadier general Yusuf Sukan, new commander of the 14th armoured brigade.

Speaking at a meeting with the so-called Prime Minister, Dervis Eroglu, lieutenant general Ahmet Ozteker said that their aim is firstly to protect the so-called «sovereignty and independence» of the pseudostate. He also noted that the new duties of Turkey within globalisation, the European Union, the European security and defence policy and NATO will not influence negatively «the duty» of the Turkish Army in Cyprus.

[03] Izcan stresses that efforts are being made to extend the existence of the military regime in the pseudostate by using terror and oppression

Izzet Izcan, General Secretary of the Patriotic Union Movement (PUM) issued yesterday a statement accusing the pseudogoverment with exerting efforts to «extend the existence of the military regime» in the pseudostate by implementing a new so-called «law» regarding the unions of the «public» servants, reports the weekly Yeni Cag (17.8.01).

Mr Izcan notes that the above-mentioned «law» includes «articles» which are not in accordance with the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) Agreements and «have no relation» to the modern world.

«After the bankruptcy of the status quo in Northern Cyprus, the administrators who are facing difficulties in governing the country, are searching ways to silence and terrify the workers with these policies of oppression and terror», underlines PUM`s General Secretary.

«PUM will continue to oppose these policies which aim at extending the life of the current military regime and maintaining the status quo», concludes Mr Izcan.

[04] Turkey and the occupied area try to by-pass the EU Court Decision

According to Turkish Daily News (17/08/2001), as the deep economic crisis in Turkey continues to influence both the Turkish and the occupied area's economies, an important decision was made recently in order to help the occupied area's economy recover.

According to the decision jointly made by Turkey and the Denktash regime, the pseudostate will be able to export its products through Turkey into world markets.

The banking crisis, which affected half of the population in the occupied area directly and the rest indirectly, has caused irreparable damage to society, and the currency crisis increased the economic problems. The Citizens, who have lost their money held in banks, could not manage to keep their money as a result of the devaluation.

The so-called Deputy Prime Minister Salih Yildirim Cosar revealed that the decree dated Aug. 7, 2001 will be an important milestone in the occupied area's economy. He said the problem of exporting goods and products will be overcome by this decree and asked for firms to produce compatible and world standard products. He said the details of the agreement will be completed in September.

Professor Erol Manisali from Istanbul University told the Turkish Daily News (TDN) that this decision was made late, but added that it will be helpful in the recovery of the occupied area economy. Manisali also noted that this decision will not create any difficulty for Turkey from the point of view of international laws since Turkey is one of the guarantor states of Cyprus according to the London and Zurich agreements. Recalling that this decision was made 8 years ago, Manisali noted that the Greek Cypriots have taken important steps by entering into special relations with Greece from 1992. A Turkish official close to the government refrained from commenting on this issue, but they told the TDN that this attempt aims to refurbish the occupied area's economy. He did not accept the description "integration of the custom unions of Turkey and KKTC" but said it can be understood as the first steps of economic integration.

[05] Peaches imported from Turkey contain harmful chemicals

According to KIBRIS (17.08.2001) 14 tons of peaches, imported from Turkey to the occupied area were found containing high levels of the insecticide "Methamidophos" which is harmful to people's health.

KIBRIS reports that the imported "poisonous" peach consignment was not allowed to be distributed in the market and at the occupied Kyrenia port it was destroyed.

Methamidophos is an insecticide that contains organic phosphates, which has fatal effects on human beings.
