United Nations Spokesman Fred Eckhard said on Thursday that the meeting would take place within the framework of efforts to resume Cyprus negotiations in which any development could not be recorded for a while.

Eckhard noted that Alvaro de Soto, the Special Representative of Annan to Cyprus, would go to the island following the meeting between Rauf Denktas and United Nations Secretary-General Annan.

De Soto is envisaged to hold talks with Mr Denktas and with Greek Cypriot leader Glafcos Clerides.

[02] The army prevents PUM leader from visiting the free areas of Cyprus

The weekly Yeni Cag (3.8.01) reports that the Turkish occupation army prevented yesterday Izzet Izcan, Patriotic Union Movement's (PUM) leader, from visiting the free areas of Cyprus in order to have contacts with Greek Cypriot parties.

The paper writes that on 27 July Mr. Izcan had taken permission from the so-called «Ministry of Foreign Affairs», but yesterday when he tried to cross over to the free areas, the army did not allow him.

«We have been saying it for years. The Turkish Army and civil bureaucracy are administering this country, not we», notes Yeni Cag.

[03] The occupation regime destroys ancient tombs

According to the weekly Yeni Cag (3.8.01), until recently rocks from ancient tombs near the ruins of Ayios Filon church in occupied Karpass peninsula were being cut and moved away with the permission of the occupation regime.

In a dispatch about the ancient town of Karpass, the paper notes that the carved tombs are 500 metres west of the church and belong to the Hellenistic and Roman period.

[04] The minimum salary determined at 155 dollars

All the Turkish Cypriot newspapers (3/8/01) refer to the meeting held yesterday by the "Committee for Deciding the Minimum Salary". The "Committee" took the following decision: As of 1st August the minimum hourly wage will be 1,385,000 TL, the minimum daily wage will be 11,075,000 TL, the minimum weekly wage will be 55,385,000 TL, and the minimum monthly salary 240,000,000 TL.

[05] New steps for illuminating the flag of the pseudostate on Pentadaktylos mountain

Vatan (3/8/01) reports that the initiatives for illuminating the flag of the pseudostate at occupied Pentadaktilos mountain range are continuing. A new project has begun since the first of August. According to the paper they will try to illuminate the flag by using wind and solar energy. A wind station will be built next to the flag. The project will be completed in a year and a half and it will cost 990,000 pounds sterling. The flag's perimetre, star and crescent will be lined up with 20 w light sources (compact fluerasant; which has the same power as 100w home bulb). These sources will be lined up five meters within each other.

The Turkish flag and the occupation regime's flag will appear alternately all night, as light sources change their colours. The energy will be supplied with solar panels and wind turbines and stored in huge batteries.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[07] Turkish Cypriot columnist criticizes the terrorist TMT organization and its successor, the National People's Movement

Kubilay Ozkirac, columnist of Avrupa (3.8.01), strongly criticizes the Turkish Cypriot terrorist organization TMT, the National People's Movement (NPM), which is considered as its continuation, and all the nationalists and extremists in occupied Cyprus.

The so-called «Turkish Resistance Organization», as was the full name of TMT, was founded in the fifties and since then committed a lot of crimes against progressive Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. It also carried out bomb attacks and other terrorist actions, aiming at proving that the two communities in Cyprus cannot live together. In this way, the founders of TMT were trying to realize their slogan which was «Division or Death».

Referring to the speeches made by the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas and the other nationalists at the celebrations of the 1st August, the anniversary of TMT`s foundation, Mr. Ozkirac noted that they had said that the «spirit of the TMT should not die», that they feel proud of the TMT and that «TMT is the real identity of the people». Under the title «Which spirit?» Avrupa`s columnist writes, among other things, the following:

«...Which TMT spirit? Which real identity of the people? The pride of what? Why gratitute? Do you talk about the spirit of those who disgraced the Turkish Cypriot people in their own country? Or may be the spirit of those who have imprisoned the Turkish Cypriots in an enclaved life? Do you talk about the spirit of TMT which swallowed the money of Cyprus, which made the Cypriots to emigrate from their own country, which with slanders and plots proclaimed the patriots as traitors and friends of the Greeks?

Tell us great members of TMT, tell us. ..But you cannot tell us. All your speeches are lies, the so-called nationalist speeches, your shouting are lies. The Turkish Cypriots know your intentions very well. They know well that your speeches about the continuation of an ill - smelling dirty order. ...We also know for what and for whom you fought. We know very well by whom this state you have established with pride is administered. It is obvious what the collaborators and those who are against peace are aiming at by establishing recently underground fascist organizations....

We know also the special duties the military forces and Denktas gave to these organizations. ...We know why you celebrate the 1st of August and 15 November. Of course for the continuation of the plundering order and the dictatorship of Denktas. ...However, we the Turkish Cypriot patriots will not leave this country to you, the nationalists. Because this land, these mountains, these fields are ours and we are going to continue resisting in this country. ...».
