[01] The Turkish Cypriot leader to meet with the UN Secretary-General

Question: Can you comment on your contacts in Malaysia and the issues discussed during your talks?

Answer: We held a meeting with the Malaysian prime minister this morning. The meeting lasted approximately 45 minutes. We are very pleased. We held a very good, effective, and beneficial meeting in a friendly atmosphere on matters of mutual assistance between Islamic countries within the framework of the Islamic Conference Organization. Later, we will attend a dinner with his deputy, where we will have the opportunity to meet with other statesmen. This is a very civilized, beautiful, and clean country. It is particularly advanced in the field of electronics. It is a country in which our businessmen should take an interest. Therefore, we are very pleased with our contacts today.

Question: Your visit to Malaysia triggered great reaction in the Greek Cypriot sector. They are afraid that the «Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus» will be recognized and accepted as it is.

Answer: Do not pay any heed to any of that. They are even afraid of our shadow. Do not pay any attention to that. They will do their utmost to prevent our recognition. Do you have other questions?

Question: The Greek Cypriot press states that the Cyprus proximity talks will resume in September. Has the Turkish Cypriot side received information to that effect?

Answer: No. My going to New York and my meeting with the Secretary- General is on the agenda. A decision will be reached at the end of this meeting. No date has yet been set for my New York visit. We are working on this. If this meeting goes well, naturally the talks could begin. However, it all depends on my meeting with the Secretary- General in New York.

[02] Works for turning the church in occupied Thermia into a nightclub intensify

As the paper notes, the fact that the so-called Antiquities Department of the pseudostate remains silent «is amazing», given that the church and its surroundings which belongs to the 17th century are an archaeological site. Avrupa writes also that an archaeologist who conducted a research in the area last week found ceramics which belong to the Bronze Era and handed them over to the so-called Antiquities Department. The findings belong to the year 2300 BC and their value is high.

[03] The so-called Foreign Affairs Ministry criticizes the G-8 decision for Cyprus

The so-called Ministry alleges that the G-8 «must make the right diagnosis» regarding the reasons for which the efforts towards finding a solution have not been successful and «open the way for the creation of the necessary ground and environment» for productive talks.

«The just and lasting solution to which the G-8 are referring in their statement will be found by the two owners of the island and not by the G-8», says the so-called Ministry claiming that the solution «will be viable if it is formed on the basis of the two equal states and safeguards the balance between Turkey and Greece».

[04] American scientists to conduct research about the water resources of Cyprus

According to the paper, the project will cost 2,5 million dollars and is expected to be completed within two years. As it is reported, the amount which will be spent for the pseudostate is 550 thousand dollars.

Mustafa Can, the so-called director of Projects of the pseudoministry of Internal, Agriculture and Housing Affairs, has said that in the project were included the so-called Geological and Mines Department and the Water Affairs Department.

[05] The Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources will visit the occupied areas

[06] The wreckage of a plane was found in the sea, off the coast of Ag. Ambrosios

According to the article, Swiss divers, who dived in the area of occupied Agios Ambrosios sea, found a British warplane that sank during the Second World War. A human skeleton was also found in the wreckage of the plane, which is believed to belong to the pilot of the plane.

It is expected that the occupation authorities will deliver the human skeleton to the British military officials in order to identify and bury it. It is also believed that it will be easy to identify the pilot, because the planes and the pilots, which were lost at that area, are registered in the British official records, writes Kibrisli.

[07] RTP placed a black wreath at Denktash's house

The march ended in front of the house of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, in occupied Nicosia, where they put a black wreath at its entrance. During the protest march they shouted slogans like: "No to the price increases, no to the state terrorism, no to the integration", "Peace, Democracy, Federation", "Cyprus is ours, there is no other Cyprus".

The leader of RTP, Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat addressed the protesters in front of Denktash/s house. In his speech Mr. Talat accused Mr. Denktash for the policies he follows both regarding the Cyprus problem and the internal affairs of the Turkish Cypriots.

At the residence of Denktash there was a strong "police force" which took security measures. The protest ended without any incidents.

[B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[08] Turkey said to be concerned about G-8 statement on Cyprus

«Turkey is on a journey that is short geographically -from Paris to Genoa - but long and difficult in terms of its essence.

The world's richest seven countries plus Russia are meeting at the G-8 summit in Genoa. At first glance the purpose of the G-8 summit is combating poverty because poverty also means war. Consequently hunger and poverty must be eliminated to protect peace. Also child poverty, repression of women, illiteracy, epidemic diseases, and corruption pose continual threats to rich countries. For this reason the G-8 countries are determined to help developing countries in order to reduce the scope of this threat and to protect themselves.

But not so easy. They want to offer help at a price. There will be economic aid but that aid will come together will political coercion. A typical example is Turkey. Turkey is being discussed at Genoa at a time when it is economically besieged.

At present the most urgent issue is Turkey's domestic and external debt payments. The address of external debt payments is Genoa. From Paris to Genoa. Why from Paris?

Debt Owed to Rich

The famous Paris Club of the past is the institution that forms the foundation of the modern G-8. This is an institution that manages the debts owed to the rich and that organizes the economic and political relations of rich countries with debtor nations. It works in collaboration with the IMF, the OECD, and the World Bank.

Turkey first became familiar with the Paris Club in 1958. The letter of intent it signed at that time and the economic program that followed it described how Turkey would pay its external debts. The debt repayment plan was drawn up by the Paris Club. After every economic crisis in the 1960s and 1970s Turkey marched before the Paris Club. Each time, depending on the period, it was also presented with a recipe for the solution of international problems. In one sense [the Paris Club] may be called the political arm of the IMF.

Today, in Genoa, there are quests for common action against impoverishment and hunger as well as for solutions to problems of racial discrimination and political problems in an extensive area extending from the Middle East to the Caucasus, and from the Balkans to Africa and Kashmir.

[There are also quests for a solution] to the Cyprus problem. Quests that go hand in hand with economic aid.

G-8 Declaration, Cyprus Panic

Ankara is in panic. Turkish ambassadors to G-8 countries have recently been busy knocking on many doors in their capitals.

Turkey's economic crisis is also on the table in Genoa. The IMF and the World Bank are already there. However in addition to Turkey's crisis the G-8 is also discussing Cyprus. Indeed the declaration to be issued after the summit contains a special paragraph about Cyprus.

Ankara is working feverishly to soften the tone of this paragraph. Our ambassadors are working day and night to have the declaration modified in Turkey's favour. The information coming in is not very hope inspiring. The declaration contains sentences that criticize Turkey and that pay tribute to the Greek Cypriot sector.

Attaching special importance to Cyprus in a document like this in the middle of an economic crisis in Turkey and at a time when Turkey needs foreign borrowing most clearly reduces Ankara's manoeuvring room. This is a formula that puts pressure on Ankara by saying in a way: "Foreign credits are possible but it is time to settle this Cyprus problem."

The policies that have been pursued for years on all platforms have turned Cyprus into a festering wound let alone solve it. As a result today foreigners can come and put their recipe before us at our weakest moment. We are virtually being made to choose between a deeper crisis and Cyprus.

The rich countries are fighting so well against poverty.
