[01] The Turkish Daily News on the three-day Symposium being held in occupied Nicosia

Turkish Daily News newspaper (12.6.01) carries a report from occupied Nicosia on the symposium «The past, the present and the vision regarding the future of Cyprus», which is being held at the so-called Near East University from 12-14 June 2001.

The paper writes that the first day of the symposium will examine the history of the Cyprus problem, the second day will analyse the current situation and the third day will be on visions for the future of the island, and concludes:

«According to many Cyprus experts, as the conference is attended so heavily by former generals and Turkish foreign ministry top executives, what is discussed on the sidelines of the three-day meeting will be much more important than what is discussed in the conference room».

[02] Turkish Research Center predicts that German citizens of Turkish origin will influence the future of Germany

Turkish Research Center (TRC) chairman professor Faruk Sen stated that German citizens of Turkish origin would be of special importance in the general elections scheduled for autumn 2002, the Anatolia News Agency reported.

«More and more Turks have become interested in staying in Germany and obtaining German citizenship in recent years», Sen added.

Sen pointed out that some 50,000 children obtain citizenship rights directly every year, and that many Turks had appealed for citizenship thanks to a new citizenship law. This brought the total number of Turkish German citizens to 470,000 at the end of the year 2000.

Sen indicated that the increasing number of Turks in Germany would affect politics in the country. «According to the projections of the TRC, the number of Turkish German citizens will reach 620,000 by the end of the year 2002, and they will influence the future of the country», Sen added.

[03] Rauf Denktash addressed the symposium being organized in occupied Nicosia

According to KIBRIS (13.6.01) a three-day symposium «The Past, the Present and Cyprus/s Vision for the Future» opened yesterday in the occupied areas of Cyprus.

Speaking during yesterday/s session of the symposium, organized by the so-called Near East University, the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash repeated his known views regarding Cyprus and added that the time has come for resurrection.

Denktash also said that the EU was not a path for the settlement of the Cyprus problem. He urged for a conclusion on the exchange of properties and bizonality issues as soon as possible.

He insisted on a settlement based on two states.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[04] Only supporters of Denktash are taking part in the three-day symposium

In its main editorial YENIDUZEN (13.6.01) refers to the symposium being held in occupied Nicosia from 12-14 June and stresses that the participants are all those who formulate and implement the wrong policies in the Cyprus problem.

«The news first came from MILLIYET newspaper. It was reported that at Near East University a symposium on `Cyprus past, present and future vision/ would be organized. The news was such that one thought that different people and forces of every inclination and view from Turkey would discuss the Cyprus problem in Cyprus» writes YENIDUZEN and adds.

«The most interesting thing at this point was that Cyprus was absent from this symposium. In the first news it has been announced that intellectuals and political forces who question the official policy on Cyprus will take part in the symposium.

However, with this understanding in mind neither political parties nor NGO/s and nor intellectuals from Cyprus, were taking part.

At the end there was a big disillusionment, the curtain was up, and those who defend without any questioning Denktash/s policies, advisors to the TRNC Presidency, civil servants, Ministry Under Secretaries from Turkey who support Denktash/s policy, retired ambassadors, retired generals and some journalists took part in the symposium and made presentations.

That is, the symposium was turned into the Queen of the story in the Snow White, who asked the mirror, `is there anyone more beautiful than I?/ It became clear that the symposium was nothing but just a «I am right» propaganda of those architects and supporters whose unsuccessful Cyprus policies lead South Cyprus to reach to the gates of the EU alone and that isolated the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey from the world.

It is clear that this guided propaganda is directed for domestic consumption. It was turned into a symposium where the defenders of this policy turned to their people and told them «we are more Turk than you are».

However, the need was to find answers to the questions: How could the interests of both the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey be advanced? What could be done regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem and EU issues? This is the problem and it became clear that this was not the case».
