[01] Denktash Replies to Criticism Describing him as Turkey's Lackey According to illegal Bayrak Radio (3.5.01) addressing a ceremony held to

unveil the Ataturk bust at the occupied Famagusta/s Canakkale School, the Turkish Cypriot leader Mr. Rauf Denktash has said that there are those who claim that he is Turkey's lackey because in a speech on occasion of May Day he said the following: ``We are Turks, we are proud to be Turks, we are loyal to the motherland, and we pursue the path of Ataturk''. Denktash noted that he learned about these claims from various press reports, adding:

``I came here to express my anger, but I saw that all the youths here and the entire school gave the necessary reply to these lackeys of foreigners. You will claim to be a Turk, but at the same time you say that we are being the lackey of Turks. This means that you are not a Turk since you see those serving the Turks as lackeys. This is shameful. Let them not make us utter these views within this community.''

Denktash stated that those who make these claims are Turks as well, survive thanks to Turkish money, and benefit from the services of the republic, adding: ``Had Anatolia not existed, this republic would not have existed either. Neither would these Turks. I know that they are aware of this reality. They have no right to make these accusations just for the sake of politics and to seem charming to the Greek Cypriots''. Alleging that such statements is a betrayal of the martyrs, Denktash said that there are those who want to alienate Turkey from the ``TRNC'', adding that the ``TRNC'' and Turkey will never be separated. He noted that those who claim that there is a Cypriot people will ultimately find the right path, adding: ``These imprudent people who view serving Turks as being lackeys will, I hope, be ashamed of what they have been saying''.

Denktash also stated that those who are opposed to integration with the motherland, a move that will improve their living conditions within the 60- million-strong nation, are willing to integrate with the Greek Cypriots. Denktash continued: ``When the motherland talks about integration, it recognizes our state, our independence, our sovereignty. It pledges to protect us. Whereas, the Greek Cypriots these individuals want to integrate with do not recognize our state and our sovereignty. They are telling us that the Greek Cypriots will return to their homes and that we shall, once again, be dispersed throughout the island. This kind of integration is tantamount to be being placed under the yoke of the Greek Cypriots, to becoming their lackeys''. Stressing that there are those who call on the Turkish Cypriots to become the lackeys of the Greek Cypriots, Denktash concluded: ``You cannot destroy this country. You cannot take this country and leave. This country is the country of the Turks. It is the country of the Turkish Cypriots, the fighters''.

[02] Eroglu Reelected NUP Leader According to KIBRIS (7.5.01) Dervis Eroglu, so-called Famagusta deputy and

Prime Minister, has been reelected leader of the National Unity Party [NUP]. The 13th regular congress of the NUP was held on 6 May. The results of the elections held for party leadership were announced today.

Addressing the congress held at the Ataturk Sports Hall, Salih Miroglu, congress chairman, and so-called Minister of Public Works and Transportation, and NUP deputy from occupied Kyrenia, said that of the two candidates who submitted their candidacy for party leadership, Eroglu received 844 and Ertugrul Hasipoglu, so-called Assembly Speaker and Famagusta deputy, received 351.

In a statement after being reelected party leader, Eroglu said that the congress had been a lesson in democracy, adding that the NUP will continue on its path in unity and solidarity. Of the 1,316 delegates who participated in the congress, 1,150 cast their votes for the party leader, the party council members, and members of the high disciplinary council. After the casting of the votes, which lasted for about five and a half hours, the council began to count the votes. First the votes cast for party leader were counted. Accordingly, Eroglu received 71 percent of the votes and Hasipoglu received 29 percent. After the declaration of Eroglu's reelection, there was great enthusiasm in the congress hall. Then Eroglu and Hasipoglu, holding hands, saluted the participants. Later both candidates came to the rostrum and delivered speeches of unity and solidarity.

Addressing the party delegates, Eroglu said that not he but the NUP was the victor, adding that the party will be further strengthened. He called for unity and solidarity in a bid to come to ``power'' as a single party. Alleging that the congress was held in a democratic spirit, Eroglu said that it has taught a lesson to those who threaten the party and who deny the existence of democracy. Expressing the belief that the difficult period will be overcome through unity and solidarity, Eroglu said: We shall serve in unity and solidarity. We shall strengthen our party. No one will or can destroy this party. He then thanked all the delegates who participated in the congress.

Meanwhile, Zeki Bayram, Nejat Onat, Ahmet Sevinc, Ethem Senturkler, and Olgun Ustun have been elected members of the party high disciplinary council.

    [03] TMT - B/ in the offing

A terrorist organisation named TMT - B/ has been established in the occupied part of Cyprus, according to ``Yeniduzen'' (07.05.01). The paper publishes a statement issued by the 41 organisations members of the platform ``This country is ours'', which criticise the creation of TMT - B/ and the bomb attacks that took place recently in the pseudostate.

The statement says that ``those who connive at the terrorism will not be able to avoid their responsibilities'' and adds, among other things, the following:

``...For 26 years this negative situation has caused the emigration of half of the Turkish Cypriots. ...There is nothing left for Denktash to give to the Turkish Cypriots. He refuses the Turkish Cypriot identity. The best thing for him to do is to leave his post and go. Saying that we will not give a single stone back to the Greek Cypriots, Denktash deceives the people for years with the integration and gratitude policies. He tries to realise his policies of terrifying and eliminating the people. Every day Mr. Denktash calls his own citizens as traitors and supporters of the Greek Cypriots. He may be giving the orders to silence them but bombs explode in various places of the country.

In the framework of the efforts of creating a new secret organisation named TMT - B/ visits are being made to villages and regions and persons who took part in the actions of TMT before 1974 are being called on duty. The fact that the police and the information services are not aware of these actions is thought - provoking, as Northern Cyprus is the most militarised place in the world. Until now the perpetrators of the political crimes and the bomb attacks conducted against some parties have not been found. The fascist organisations are continuing their acts. ...Our people fear that the dark old days will return. ...''

Meanwhile, in a commentary on the same issue, ``Avrupa'' (07.05.01) says that Rauf Denktash might be the founder of TMT - B/, as he was one of the founders of the first TMT back in 1957. The paper writes that according to ``influential and competent circles'', former so-called Foreign Minister Taner Etkin leads the efforts made in the whole occupied area of Cyprus.

``Avrupa'' wonders what the aim of TMT - B/ is and adds that ``the situation is serious'',if its aim is to protect the unity of the pseudostate and the so-called people, because ``it means that this large army and police cannot guarantee our safety'', concludes ``Avrupa''.

[04] Turkey is the less wanted country of the candidates to enter the EU

According to ``Kibrisli'' (07.05.01), 48 % of the European citizens are opposed to Turkey`s becoming a full member of the European Union (EU). Referring to the results of an opinion poll conducted by the European institution ``Eurobarometre'', the paper reports that only 30 % of the participants in the poll have expressed their support to Turkey`s candidature.

``Kibrisli'' writes that Turkey is facing the danger of being a country not wanted by the Europeans, because she has not realised any of the reforms she had promised regarding the human rights and corruption since her application for membership.

``In case the political reforms continue in the same way, we must not be surprised if in a future Eurobarometre poll more than 50 % of the Europeans are found to be against Turkey`s candidature'', notes the paper.

[05] Turkey/s Electricity Company to establish a mobile electricity generating unit in the occupied areas

KIBRISLI (7.5.01) reports that Turkey/s Electricity Production and Distribution Company (TEAS) has prepared a project for constant and secure electricity energy supply in the occupied areas.

The project has been submitted by the Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources to Turkey/s Council of Ministers for approval and if approved TEAS will start work on the project immediately.

The project provides for the establishment of a mobile electricity generating unit for the needs of the occupied areas, writes the paper.

[06] Inflation in occupied Cyprus 15.3% in April 2001 According to KIBRIS (5.5.01) the so-called State Planning Organization has

announced that the inflation rate in April was 15.3%. This raises to 30.7 the consumer price index which was 13.3 in the period from December 2000 to March 2001.
