    [A] NEWS ITEMS

[01] Mustafa Akinci is having contacts in Crimea According to KIBRIS (2.3.01) the pseudostate was represented at Crimea

International Tourism and Travel Fair with its own stand.

After opening the Fair, the Crimean Prime Minister, Mr. Sergey Kunisin, and the Minister of Tourism of Ukraine and Crimea, Mr. Alexander Garyanik, visited the pseudostate/s stand and met with the so-called state minister and deputy prime minister Mustafa Akinci.

During an interview with Crimea/s, Tatar Television and Ukraine/s National Television YT-2, Akinci said that tourism is a tool in cultural relations and peace and expressed his desire to develop further the relations between Crimea and the pseudostate.

Akinci, who visited Crimea Tatar speaker Assembly Mustafa Cemiloglu, said that they will try to develop the relations between the Turkish Cypriots and the Turks of Crimea Tatar.

[02] Scottish author of pro-Turkish book is in the occupied areas at the invitation of illegal Bayrak television

The Turkish Cypriot press today carry extensive coverage of a press conference given in occupied Nicosia yesterday by the Scottish author of the book ``Genocide Files''. According to the press the book refers to the period between 1963-1974 and alleges that during the Turkish Cypriot uprising genocide acts were committed against the Turkish Cypriots by the Greek Cypriots.

According to ``KIBRISLI'' (2.3.01), the Scottish writer of the book ``Genocide Files'', Mr. Harry Scott Gibbons, claimed that the intercommunal talks for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem are a trap for the Turks and therefore the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash did the right thing when he left the negotiating table.

Talking to the editor of KIBRISLI, Ozcan Ozcanhan after the press conference he gave in occupied Nicosia yesterday, Mr. Scott, said that ``entering the European Union is tantamount to the death of the Turkish Cypriots and the TRNC''.

``The Turkish Cypriots and the ``TRNC'' will be eliminated, in case they enter the EU'', alleged Mr. Gibbons.

Mr. Gibbons, also alleged that the Greek Cypriots would use the freedom of movement, trade and the right to property in order to ``get full control of the North''.

According to ``BIRLIK'' (2.3.01), at the press conference he gave, Mr. Gibbons said that ``the only way to prove the realities is to repeat them and keep them on the agenda''.

The press conference has been organized for the introduction of his book, which will be made a film by the illegal ``Bayrak'' television.

Mr. Gibbons invoked a statement allegedly made by President Clerides that the Turkish Cypriots would be a protected minority, and said:

``From whom will they be protected? Certainly from the Greek Cypriots''. Finally, he claimed that President Clerides has never offered anything to the Turkish Cypriots.

[03] Water treated at Mia Milia sewage system ready for the irrigation of Mesaoria

KIBRIS (2.3.01) under banner headlines ``Good News For Mesaoria'' reports that the sewage treatment installations at the occupied Mia Milia area is ready to start treating sewage water. It also reports that the sewage treatment tanks are full and ready to produce treated water which will be pumped to Mesaoria where it will be used for irrigation for producing animal fodder.

The Mia Milia project started in 1972 but it was forced to stop following the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation. The project, financed by the UNOPS - United Nations Office for Project Services - is designed to serve sewage treatment needs of the Capital.

The installations, which cover an area of 75 hectares, receive 12 thousand cubic meters of sewage water daily. The annual capacity of the installations is 8 million cubic meters of water.

KIBRIS reports that the cost of producing one cubic-meter of treated sewage water is 20 US cents while the cost for transporting water from Turkey by huge balloons is one US dollar.

Since the treated water will be rich in nitrogen and phosphate derivatives, farmers will not need to use fertilizers.

KIBRIS further reports that 80% of the sewage water comes from the free areas of Nicosia and 20% from the occupied area.

The monthly expenses of the installations, including salaries of the workers working at the installations, are 13 thousand USD of which 10 thousand USD is paid by the Nicosia Municipality in the free areas.

[04] Izzet Izcan: The problems get bigger because of the non-solution According to ``KIBRIS'' (2.3.2001), the leader of the Patriotic Union Movement

(PUM) Mr. Izzet Izcan, said yesterday that the problems of the Turkish Cypriots get bigger everyday because of the continuation of the status quo in Cyprus, the non-solution of the Cyprus problem and the fact that the Turkish Cypriot community is fully dependent on Turkey.

Speaking at a press conference at his Party/s headquarters, Mr. Izcan stressed that the Turkish Cypriots were every day more and more eliminated, as a result of a policy and a programme which are deliberately applied.

He once more expressed his party/s support for a just solution of the Cyprus problem, within the framework of the High Level Agreements, noting that the intercommunal talks must immediately be resumed.

Mr. Izcan also said that some new obstacles were brought to the visits from the occupied part of Cyprus to the free areas, which prevented the bi- communal contacts.

In addition to the already existing measures the so-called state demands a written application and a signature from the Turkish Cypriots who wish to visit the free areas, Izcan said.

    COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[01] Turkish Professor Faruk Sen/s views on EU-Cyprus-Turkey According to Professor Faruk Sen, who gave an interview to Erhan Basyurt of

``ZAMAN'' newspaper (28.2.01), the European Union could accept the Republic of Cyprus as a full member before a solution to the island/s political problems.

Mr. Sen, who is the director of the Research Center for Turkey (TAM) in Germany, said that if Cyprus becomes a member of the EU before the solution of the Cyprus problem and before Turkey, then Turkey will have to overcome two vetoes in order to enter the Union.

Asked whether the Europeans would accept the division of the island, Sen, replied as follows:

``Yes, they will accept the two states. Then TRNC will have two options. Either entering together with the Southern Cyprus or wait for Turkey/s full membership. With this they are expecting a solution in the TRNC.

Turkey must not allow this to happen. Turkey must exercise pressure for the continuation of the talks between the two sides and for her accession to the EU simultaneously with southern Cyprus. However, for this purpose she must also implement the National Programme the sooner possible.''

Replying to a question he said that when he talks about insisting on Tukrey/s simultaneous accession to the EU with the Republic of Cyprus, he means that Turkey must insist on the Zurich - London Agreements according to which ``Cyprus cannot be a member of international oganizations in which Turkey and Greece are not members''.

Sen said that Turkey must exercise pressure in order to enter the EU in 2006-2007 with Cyprus and after the countries of Eastern Europe.

``However'', he added, ``Turkey/s bad luck is Southern Cyprus being a small state, which has a population of 650 thousands and 18 thousand dollars per capita income''.

Therefore, he noted the EU will not have any reservations regarding Cyprus/ economic situation to accept her as a full member.

Replying to a question, Sen claimed that if the Republic of Cyprus recognized the Turkish Cypriot so-called State, Germany France, Italy and the Netherlands would lift their veto for Cyprus/ accession to the EU without her political problem being solved and ``Southern Cyprus'', as he calls the Republic of Cyprus, would become a full member of the Union before Turkey.
