[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Gen. Ozkok on Turkey's Support Anatolia Agency (11:07 hours, 4.2.01) reports that General Hilmi Ozkok,the Commander of Turkish Land Forces, said on Sunday, ``the Turkish Armed Forces is determined to protect Turkish Cypriot people against any threat towards security of these territories for which Turkish Cypriots sacrificed their lives.``General Ozkok left the occupied area for Turkey after wrapping up his contacts. Addressing journalists at the occupied Tymbou airport prior to his departure, Ozkok said, ``we have been monitoring all efforts of Greece and the Greek Cypriot side including armament and use of Baf Air Base.`` Ozkok said, ``as a guarantor country, Turkey will continue to protect its rights and benefits on Cyprus stemming from international agreements, and to fulfill its commitments to the Turkish Cypriots.`` [02] Master Plan Tender Bids for 'TRNC' Water Supply To Be Submitted Feb 7 Anatolia Agency (11:04 hours, 4.2.01) reports that the first concrete stepin water supply project which will bring long-term solution to water demand in the occupied area of Cyprus will be taken with a tender to be held in February.The bids for the ``TRNC`s'' water master plan engineering services tender which was developed under coordination of the Turkish State Water Works (DSI) which planned to prepare a comprehensive water master plan for the island will be submitted on February 7, 2001. The project which aims to reveal surface and subsurface water potential of the ``TRNC'' will be put into practice by the DSI Directorate General which will spend almost 500 billion Turkish lira (TL) on engineering services of the project. DSI planned to give the start for works on master plan in first quarter of 2001. [03] Denktas threatens that Application for EU Membership To Backfire According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (16:30 hours, 5.2.01), Turkish Cypriotleader Rauf Denktash has stated: ``The TRNC has been established. There is no going back''. In an ``appeal'' to President Clerides Denktash claimed that the initiative toward EU membership will backfire. He added: ``This policy has not paved and will not pave the way to establishing a new partnership under equal conditions with us.''Pointing out that the path to conciliation can be opened only if the Greek Cypriot side accepts the ``realities'', Denktas continued: ``There is no other way. A solution based on two states is the manifestation of the realities.'' Denktas reacted to the statement President Clerides made on 4 February in which he stated that Denktas was responsible for the current impasse. In a statement to illegal TAK , Denktas assessed President Clerides' statement in question. Denktas was asked: ``Clerides has been repeating what he said eight years ago. In other words, he is saying that he is optimistic about a solution and that the obstacle stems from your insistence on a solution based on two states or on a confederation. What is your assessment?'' Denktas replied: ``As you will recall, I invited Clerides to have coffee with me and to show the people that we favour a conciliation. The set-of-ideas is on the negotiating table. I invited him to discuss them. His reply was categorical. He said that we lacked a common denominator over which to base the discussions. He refused to hold direct talks with us for two years.'' [04] Tziakourmas to appear twice before ``court'' KIBRIS (8.2.01) reports that Panicos Tziakourmas who was illegally abductedand is illegally being held by the occupation regime, will be brought twice before a ``court'' today.Tziakourmas will be first taken to the so-called Famagusta District Court, where he will be accused of entering illegally into the occupied area, and of allegedly possessing and illegally importing narcotics in to the occupied area. Then he will be brought before the so-called Nicosia court where his application to be set free on bail will be discussed. [05] Patriotic Unity Movement calls on Denktash to return to negotiations According to KIBRIS (8.2.01) the General Secretary of the Patriotic UnionMovement (PUM), Izzet Izcan, in a written statement yesterday called on Denktash to return to the negotiation table and exhibit a constructive attitude and contribute to the settlement of the Cyprus problem.Izcan said that if Denktash continues his negative attitude then he has to resign. ``In the same way as the evolution of the world cannot be stopped, the Turkish Cypriots/ march towards peace, democracy and power to rule cannot be stopped either'' Izcan declared. [06] Turk arrested for narcotics smuggling According to KIBRIS (8.2.01) Denktash/s police arrested yesterday RamazanZengin (27) at the occupied Kyrenia port, for trying to smuggle in 1.5 kilos of narcotics, with a market value of 7.5 billion TL.Ramazan Zengin arrived in the occupied area yesterday from Turkey. Denktash/s ``court'' issued a two days ``remand order'' for further investigation of the case. [07] Croatian President on Cyprus problem Anatolia Agency (13:41 hours, 7.2.01) reports that Turkish President AhmetNecdet Sezer, speaking after his meeting in Ankara with Croatian President Stipe Mesic, said they discussed bilateral relations with Mesic.Noting that there is no problem between Turkey and Croatia, Sezer said that ``yet we/ve determined that our bilateral and economic relations don/t reflect the potential which both countries have''. Sezer said that they also reached consensus of opinion to increase their cooperation in the fields of military, defense industry, security and fight with organized crime. ``We exchanged views about regional and international issues which concern our countries particularly the recent developments in the Balkans'', said Sezer. ``We reached a consensus of opinion to increase our contributions to efforts aiming at providing a permanent peace and stability in Southern Europe and to further improve our dialogue to this end'', Sezer said. Mesic said in his part that they also referred to the issue of ``integration process of Europe'' with Sezer, adding that he believed problems could be solved in an integrated Europe. Such an integrated Europe will lift the borders among peoples in Europe and cause their integration, he said, adding that the legal rights will be applied to everybody and everybody will live according to their own cultures. Mesic said that he believed the Cyprus issue could also be solved by an integrated Europe, adding that both communities on the island have the right to determined their own future. Mesic said that they also referred to the Middle East Peace Process with Sezer, adding that ``the attitude of the new government in Israel will also play an important role in the future of this process''.
